I have had good experiences with kickstarter when it comes to board games, but everything else so far has been a disappointment. I would say just do your research on the company and the project first. Generally don't spend more than you'd be willing to drop into a slot machine. If it doesn't seem technically feasible (groundbreaking or revolutionary ideas that are actually possible will almost never need to be crowdfunded), or the people running it are unqualified or practically anonymous, just stay away.

I use Kickstarter all the time, and the idea of hiding a battery and your phone in the sole of your shoe (without a wire between the shoes?) told me that this just couldn't work. Really, spending $45 to learn not to trust people implicitly on Kickstarter was a valuable lesson. That being said, this was a beautiful emotional roller-coaster, almost like watching "A Christmas Story" where you see a kid growing up before you! And, your amazing storytelling had me laughing out loud throughout!
