No matter how poor someone might be, in Costa Rica, my home country, when we offer food to someone, it is consider very rude if our guests refuse it and especially if they try to convince us we need it more than they do. Lots of people in my country pay more attention to kidness and friendship than to economic issues.

@2melky Agree with 2melky, and I would add that generosity is part of her culture, by refusing the food, you most likely offended her. She wanted to be generous, and by refusing and "convincing her she needed it more", you probably made her feel inferior to you. Accept the generosity and then find opportunities to be generous in return later.

I agree. You should have eaten the food she offered you. I hope you have learned. Next time eat the food.

Oh, and good genes don't hurt either. The idea of strong social ties causing the longevity is cute but doesn't explain why nuns and priests aren't the longest living people on the planet...including Buddhists nuns and priests...don't say genes though, that will put a spear into the heart of the global vegan movement. Not that I blame the vegans, our food is so polluted that eating closer to the ground IS healthier..only because eating our filthy animals have concentrated all the chemicals. But not because animals are so bad to eat. Quite the contrary.
