The Longines “Silver Arrow” adventure began in 1955. Today we show you in a 4K-video how the "Silver Arrow" story continues in 2021.
We are also proud to have our partner Vontobel provide us with in-depth industry knowledge, featured in their latest "Swiss watch industry outlook". You can find it here: bit.ly/3mw6WEN...
In 1955 Longines held an in-house contest to find the name for a new timepiece with an avant-garde design. A name emerged that was based on one of the 450 proposals: “Silver Arrow”, a reference to the famous Mercedes Benz sports cars that dominated the racing circuits of the era.
The first “Silver Arrow” was released by the Longines factory in 1956. At the time, each of the brand’s collections bore an emblem. The “Silver Arrow” symbol was a supersonic plane flying through the stars. By making a connection between racing circuits and celestial paths, Longines confirms its connection with the world of aeronautics and its pioneers...
The 2021 timepiece shows an understated elegance and distinctive silhouette, and is powered by newest watchmaking technology. The watch has a 38.50 mm steel case which contains a self-winding mechanical movement (L888.5) with a silicon balance-spring to ensure high-precision accuracy and enhanced resistance to magnetic fields. To prove its reliability, this new timepiece comes with a five-year warranty. Resolutely minimalist, its silver opaline dial features striated indexes - like the original version - and sword-shaped hands, and both of these features are coated with Super- LumiNova®. The absence of a date display and of a “self-winding” indication contributes to its understated character while maintaining the spirit of the original timepiece. The watch features a box-shaped sapphire glass with a multi-layered anti-reflective finish, as well as a screw-down back engraved with the “Silver Arrow” emblem. A matte brown leather strap with a soft texture and vintage finishes completes this elegant composition.
Calibre L888.5 (ETA A31.L11) self-winding, 11 1⁄2 lines, 21 jewels, 25'200 A/h, silicon balance-spring, power reserve 72 hours
FUNCTIONS Hours, minutes, seconds
CASE 38.50 mm, stainless steel, special engraving on case back screw down case back with notches
DIAL Domed silver opaline, 12 striated indexes extended with an understated Super-LumiNova® rectangle
HANDS Hours and minutes hands coated with Super-LumiNova®
WATER-RESISTANT 3 bar (30 meters)
GLASS Sapphire crystal box with several layers of anti-reflective coating
STRAP Brown leather strap with buckle

Very underrated horology brand with history. They produced a few fantastic watches in the last few years. This particular model's brutal simplicity and minimalist look makes it a great addition to a watch collection. Its price proposition makes it a very attractive option too. Along with legend diver, my favourite models in recent times. Excellent review from Alexander as usual. My go to channel for watch reviews and information. Thank you

enfin! Wat a gorgeous Longines again, and with that bracelet.... it cannot be unseen now. This watch needs that bracelet. I remember these from the sixtees and seventees, then mostly in gold tone. I think it’s a missed opportunity not to provide the watch with this bracelet. Even as an option it would be ok. Love the fact they upped the movement power reserve again, well done Longines.

@@WatchAdvisor Maybe I am not their focus customer, but to me Longines is what is The nice Seiko’s or King Seiko’s to others. I have watches from all the usual suspects, and if Longines wants to keep me interested, they need to come with a complete, finished product. I know their are more watch nuts that love their heritage series, but it needs to be as nice as they can, and they can. The leather straps are like the cheap shoes on a nice suit kinda thing. We have seen them appear in all kinds of iterations and it’s maybe ok for keeping it budget, but why brands do not provide more customisation? It’s for me what is going to keep me coming back. Nomos does this very well. Omega has started this too and so does Breitling. (I won’t talk what Zenith is not doing...)

Love the dial, especially those indices! 48mm lug to lug is very long for a 38.5mm watch though. Also the original actually looks better proportioned than the re-issue. With especially the latter’s bezel looking too thick in relation to that great dial. Still, a very nice watch. I wouldn’t say no to one, even though I’m not a “young person” anymore 👴 😁

Thanks for bringing us this great watch. Longines' Heritage range continues to do little wrong. Great design and quality (those batons!) - glad they incorporated modern lume. My son (17) loves this watch, so some evidence that the design resonates with young people (quite retro inspired) today. I'm slightly underwhelmed by Longines' straps, but this watch is easily worth an upgrade to a top quality strap that would make the watch look well indeed. As in talking point stunning.

Thank you for the review Alexander. No I have (yet) another Longines watch on my list to see at an AD. This model looks elegant without being pretentious, the dial is a work of art paying homage to the original using modern materials. The hour markers combined with the hands and minimal dial text look beautiful. I think I may have a difficult choice between the Silver Arrow, The Sector small seconds and the Tuxedo, not to mention the Legend Diver that is becoming an it'ch that I may just have to scratch.

Back in the late 1970s I had a similar expanding metal bracelet that I never felt comfortable with, always leaving an imprint on my wrist of the underside of the band. @lipinglin1994
@lipinglin1994 3 жыл бұрын
@@WatchAdvisor Yes. I think the design back in the days to have longer lugs is to have the watch sit better on the wrist because of their small case diameter back in the days. Nowadays, you have huge watches that go with super long lugs, which can make the watch heavier and in your way when you are rotating your wrist. I don't have anything against this watch design, I just wish they could scale it down a little bit more.

I echo those sentiments for other watches in longines' heritage lineup. The dress watches like the flagship heritage at 38.5 wear surprisingly large because of the absence of a strong bezel. This one, however, has a prominent bezel and will likely wear like a hamilton khaki field 38. It seems right on the money for a dress-casual watch nowadays. Doming is present on this model, but it's subtle.
@bookofmillions

It is domed, slightly on the sides. May I ask you, since you've owned the original, did you ever had any water 💧 🤔 problems? I never owned a watch with WR below 50m... I'm wondering if it lasts well over 2-3 years of regular wear...
@bluebox303
@bluebox303 2 жыл бұрын
@@bookofmillions I used to swim with a Casio that had 30m of water resistance, so I'd personally be comfortable wearing a watch with that level of WR. The most important thing is making sure your seals are in good condition, and have the watch pressure checked annually. Vintage watches typically aren't WR anymore due to how they've usually gone through decades of wear without maintenance, so I wouldn't take one into the water unless it's been specifically rebuilt for WR.

@@bluebox303 many thanks 😊! I'll buy it as it represents a bit of horological history and it's on the affordable side. I'll make sure to keep it dry at all times. The seals also checked. Damn, I thought I never interested in a dress watch! Now, I scare my collection will grow too large that I can imagine, sigh. Sexy!

It's always a habit of mine to try out the watch before pulling the trigger, unfortunately Malaysia is entering another full lock down currently so I'm not able to visit AD or boutique in the city. However, tempting, very tempting indeed! :D

Nice watch but the 48mm lugs are way too long for a 38.5mm watch. should be 46mm.

You should try the watch on your wrist and then let us know again what you think. I’m sure you will think different…

@@WatchAdvisor I agree I have bought many years ago ( around 2003 ) a Tissot prs 516, 38 mm and 50mm lug to lug and I have a small wrist, 16,5cm but 49 /50mm wide, it was my first mechanical watch and I never checked the L to L distance until recently, it wears great and nobody tell me it was to big for my wrist. So always try a watch on your wrist when it is possible, because the distance L to L is just an information, the design of a watch play a lot of the size perception

I agree. I thought it would be 45mm and damn they made it 48mm. Why? Because they are afraid that people will think it is too small. Making a smaller watch and want it to fit larger wrist doesn't let it fit together. :(

@@domokun938 Yeah. It makes no sense for a 38 to have a 48 lug. I tried on the VC Historique Chronograph today and it has the same problem. Horned lugs goes too long.
