We have a bit of a family history with Skagway. As I kid, I was always told that my great grandfather left his family to go the Alaska gold rush. That was about it for years. Then about 10 years ago my brother and his wife were in Skagway on a cruise and were in one of the old buildings going through the old time post cards. One of them was a picture of the building in about 1900 and in the background is another building with "John Stanley - Blacksmith" painted on it - They found him!!. He was a blacksmith by trade and apparently took a look at the Chilikoot and decided to stay in Skagway. Of course they bought the postcard. A bit more research of family stuff and they ran across a picture my grandmother had of him in front of the blacksmith shop (with said sign on the building) and a couple of other men, one of which was siting in a buckboard. My grandmother had written on the back that the guy in the buckboard was Soapy Smith - so he apparently had some low friends. They went on the same cruise a few years later and took the picture into the Skagway historical society. They were polite but very badly wanted to make a copy of the picture, which my brother allowed. (He described the lady at the counter as acting like an over excited puppy). The historical society was able to identify the lot for them, which is now a Hawaiian restaurant. We were up there a couple of years ago and were able to find the same restaurant, under new owners. We declined to eat there as there is something not right about Hawaiian food in Alaska. I much preferred the Spruce Tips Ale at Skagway Brewing.

Last year we headed to Alaska from Florida. By the time we made it to Yellowstone and beyond, we never turned our air on again. This was the end of June and we came back the end of September. We went up the Alcan and like you, came back the Cassiar. No regrets and absolutely stunning scenery. Hopefully, we can do it again. Great job on your videos by the way!

We have made the trek to Alaska five times, and throughly enjoyed each trip. Took the Cassier south once, and stopped for lunch at the Bell lodge at the southern end. After lunch we found the Cassier highway north was closed because a couple of miles of the highway had collapsed into a bordering lake. It was August, and the officer blocking the road said they thought they might open it again by October or November. Did not affect us, but gave us the shivers since we had just driven over the stretch that collapsed an hour or two before. One special place we found last summer was the old Denali highway. It is a gravel road through the middle of Alaska and we were lucky enough to see a herd of literally hundreds of caribou moving across the tundra. The views are spectacular, and there are state campgrounds and numerous bushwhacking campsites along the route.

I think we met that boarder guard at a different crossing. There were 4 of us and all of our gear to go backpacking for a week plus. We were going into Canada for supper. Guess that makes you a prime candidate for a search. Turns out there weren't any place to eat where we were so we ended up eating at a gas station and then coming back. 45 minutes to an hour to get into Canada and about 3 minutes to get back into the US. Live and learn.

We just did the Alaska tour of 61 days with Fantasy RV tours. This was truly the best way to see Alaska and the Canadian Rockies. They take care of the camping and arrange several attractions and trips along the way. I think that it is the safest way to do this kind of adventure. After the Alaska tour ended, we were able to join the Fantasy West coast tour that was also exciting. I will never forget the adventure or the friends we found along the way in the tour group.

Growing up in SE Alaska, I had front row seats to the demise of the lumber industry only to be replaced with tourism. Tourism was Skagway's saving grace as there was literally nothing else to offer and the city is indeed almost a ghost town in the winter months. This scenario is repeated in many other small towns were cruise ships dock in SE Alaska. While I'm glad that tourism brings in the dollars the cities need to stay alive, it always breaks my heart to see a once bustling downtown, that had mom & pop shops year round, replaced with corporate owned jewelry stores and tourist traps staffed with temporary summer employees.

The port of skagway does a fair bit of trade from the gold mines sending their ore out to china for smeltingout of the yukon. Places like minto and the project in keno should run year round. But I do agree it's almost entirely a tourist locale now and they do a decent job of adapting.

Agreed, some of them towns should just belly up if all they remain open on is corporate revenue. Not a real town...they are a prop.

In October 1979 we left California through the southeast tip of Oregon, through Idaho, through Wyoming, through Yellowstone, up to Montana, stopped in Apgar Mt, and saw 283 Bald Eagles. Then into Alberta, Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise, and up to Edmonton. This was in October. We then continued across the Continent weaving between Canada and the United States, all the way to the Atlantic coast. Then back through the States to we got home in California. We had 1973 Cortez Motor Home our 6-year-old daughter and our Springer Spaniel. We even got to go to the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. The whole trip took us around six months. We've gone across again, but that trip was the best ever.

I think I mentioned this in a previous comment. Once you're in Vancouver, take the ferry over to Vancouver Island, then tour Vancouver Island, then drive to Port Hardy on Northern tip of Vancouver Island, then take another BC Ferry overnight (comes with a state room) up to Prince Rupert, then take Alaska State Ferry up to Skagway. Do your Alaska/Yukon touring and then drive back down through Banff and Jasper. Also, when you're in Vancouver, ping me and I will give you the insiders tour of Vancouver.

great video again. we just completed 7300 miles to Alaska and the Yukon. that didn't include the ferry trip from Bellingham to Haines Alaska. on the way back we hit 8 national parks with the best being glacier national Park and the grand Tetons. we saw more wildlife in 1 day from Watson lake (83,000 signs now) to fort Nelson than we did the whole 5 week trip. we can't wait to do this again.

Great videos, there are two stops that were exceptional on the return trip from AK, 1st was Fort St. James( Hudson Bay trading post from the 1700's) 5 star rating in my book, it is just north of Vanderhoof BC. 2nd was Barkerville BC just east of Cottonwood on hwy 26, this is a old mining town with people dressed and doing skits of the 1800's, just like going back in time 100 yrs ago. Next trip to AK will stop at both places again.Been subs for yrs,

When I was in Watson Lake in '84, there were only about 500 signs. That rascal's grown. My Alaska Hwy. alternative on the way home was the Top of the World Hwy. from Tok to Dawson City, Yukon; Klondike Loop to Carmacks, then the Campbell Hwy. back to Watson Lake with a side trip to Tungsten, NWT, on the Nahanni Range Rd. On either #3 or 4, I went an entire half day before seeing another car in either direction, and periodically the road would widen to expressway width in order to serve as an emergency landing strip for small planes; #4, after 1 house around mile 20 of 125 miles, not another house on the entire road--absolute wilderness, and at the end of the road, a mining town of maybe 200 people. What a cross cultural experience for someone from even a medium-sized city of around 150,000 like me.

Great bear watching in Hyder, lots 0f Bald Eagles outside of Skagway in Dyea, AK and good hiking too! we were there during a salmon run and got to see the Griz moms tearing apart the salmon and feed it to their cubs! Gland that you got to see Bamff and Jasper they are not to be missed... great hiking, but has to be in groups of no less than 6, the robins egg blue color lakes are breath taking! You have captured so many good shot of the wildlife! Thanks for sharing!

Keeping warm. I partition my sleeping room to 8x8x4 feet high. Outside temp 16 degrees. Inside 50 degrees. Using one small propane bottle (1 quart?) and a one burner stove per night. I fill the 1 quart bottles from a 5 gallon propane bottle an adapter. My cost per 1 quart bottle is 25 cents. Great videos.

Yes, many of the cruise ships gain the product and sell it really cheap in the ship. I bought a super coat that said "laska" a reject for $8 but living in NEbraska and working in Fairbanks got use.. Took the train ride from there under blue skies. Beautiful LONG ride.. By the way Disney owns the railroad the conductor said. There was a good story the guide gave us on that cemetery. Something about old politics and death and a apparently famous story.

Nice video. I've been twice: 2004 in a truck camper and 2013 on my Harley with my Navy bud. My home is in WA on Whidbey Island and have friends in BC. I visit periodically. For the border crossing in Vancouver, an alternative well worth considering is the crossing at Sumas. Less popular and pretty much right on the path to Kamloops or further East like Jasper. You came down through Whistler so passing through the Peace Arch crossing was the more direct way. Consider next time on your return to go to Abbotsford and take the Sumas crossing. From there follow the road to Bellingham, WA, or for the more adventures, follow WA 9 to Sedro Wooley and then WA 20 to I-5. That is a pretty drive with some access to other places worth visiting like Mt Baker and Artist Point at the top! Enjoy your videos. You tow while I carry a truck camper. Just as much fun either way! Hope to see you out there somewhere! -Bud

Love the view of Denali. Went with my parents and younger brother towing an Argosy in '78. We never got over to Skagway so you've helped me see even more. We drove the Cassiar up and the Alaska Highway back. Shortly after crossing into Canada on the way back one of the curved windows broke. That was the only damage we had but later that day a group towing one of the big wooden boxes asked us about our experience. They felt we had gotten off easy as their stove fell out of its place and they had taken a ferry up and only been on the road a short while. Keep the wonderful views and good advice coming. I'll be using some of the advice soon.

I have watched most of your videos. I like the real life experiences and practical advice. I have done quite a bit of tent camping in western USA. We bought a small Airstream and now looking to hit the road. I believe I am starting with some background thanks to your videos. I know you don't travel with pets, but we have a small dog we take as he cannot be left at home. Any practical advice about pets from some of your subscribers would be useful. Of course we carry a lot of poop bags etc. Some places are just dog friendly like state parks, and some are not like National Parks. I am interested in security issues and what your experiences are with the inevitability of encountering jerks, at parks, gas stations and how to avoid them, what to look for etc. I spent a year in the Aleutians and always wanted to see the nice parts of Alaska. Thanks

I've watched all your videos and this last one came just in time! Day after tomorrow we hit the road! Our plan is to leave central NH and go north across Canada then up the Alcan, then down the Cassiar and back across the northern states. We have a 30 foot fifth wheel and plan on about three months of travel and exploration. Thanks for the great videos and wish us luck!

Thanks, sounds like a great plan to me. You have an excellent route and plenty of time. IMHO you are traveling at an ideal time too (although ultimately that will be up to Mother Nature :D). Safe travels & enjoy the adventure!

When travelling in Canada, a cheap place to get propane is Costco. We filled our tall tanks for the RV for about $12 each.

Would like to see step by step of the treacherous trails of the gold diggers & miners that went up to the Klondike during the gold rush, or at least a drone shot of it...I believe Jack London wrote about it....& maybe some aerial drones shots or helicopter shots of the outstanding scenery and the Bering Strait too...wouldn't mind seeing ya do some fishing...Also scenes of the aurora borealis, maybe a flight out to Nome, ,,ya know what they say, there's no place like Nome! ;)

Just finished your Alaska videos! Well put together! Thanks for sharing! We are heading to AK from Lake Tahoe in a couple days! We have a different agenda being ski and snowmobile oriented but will check out some of the spots and already picked up the milepost book! Thanks! I hope we can put a video together that even comes close to yours!

Just breathtaking! My husband and I will definitely be taking a trip to Alaska. That's the one place my husband has really, really wanted to visit. I'm sure I haven't seen all of your videos. I was curious, when is the ideal time to go? Summer, I'm assuming. I'm going to consult Google too, just in case you're busy. ☺💕

We will be driving a Class C from Indiana to Alaska in the early summer of 2018, is it worth the cost and effort to take extra gas into Canada for the trip? Thanks for anyone's thoughts and experiences on this in advance.
@swahilijs
@swahilijs 7 жыл бұрын
Jim JN I wouldn't worry about extra gas, especially if you have the milepost. although always fill up in the afternoon or evening. our gps said there was a gas stdtion. but when you hit the road at 6 or 7 am alot of stations in the Yukon aren't open.

I go with no less than two spare rims & tires. With the roads, tires take a beating. I also carry chains for both the truck and trailer, just in case.

Get a Nexus card. It is cheaper than a passport $50. Last five years and no waiting at either side of the border.

Canadian here! Some tips: BC has a huge number of free/cheap boondocking sites (google BC recreation sites). Many are RV accessible. The pricing now is a bit different - the value of the Canadian dollar has dropped in the last couple years, bringing costs more on par with the USA. Hopefully cross border shopping will have decreased a bit, making the crossing a bit less painful. And most importantly: BEARS ARE WILD ANIMALS. IF YOU SEE ONE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR DAMN CAR. THEY WILL EAT YOU.

Thanks much, you know we were going to Alaska and back at a historically inopportune time -- not only was the exchange rate pretty bad for us, but the cost of fuel was reaching a new high! If we were doing the same trip today it would cost thousands less. Agree totally with your bear tip! Could not believe that guy was rolling the dice for his photo...

I have a 40 gallon Transfer Flow tool box/fuel tank in the back of my pickup. Gives me 74 gallons total. Can easily run all day towing. Also gives you the option of fueling up where the fuel is cheaper.
