This game was a huge part of my childhood. It's sad to see this series has kind of been forgotten over the years. I actually like the Netflix series but it it's just not the same. Fantastic videos!
@Icicle_1585 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I'm just doing my part to ensure this game series is archived for future viewers. After mulling about the Netflix series, I personally found it to be well made, albeit targeted to a younger demographic. Of course, the parts where Carmen did her magic were the highlight of the show. That being said, I laughed out loud when Carmen, following years of criminal training, stated that stealing was a bad thing to do after a single conversation with an archaeologist. It's like if Breaking Bad had an episode where Walter White abandons the meth business and comes to the realization that "Drugs are bad." The problem isn't that the answer was unethical; any person in the real world knows the consequences of criminal behavior. Rather, the problem is that it slams the door on a potentially more interesting story. Consider a series where Carmen jumps ship from ACME, builds a global criminal enterprise, snuffs out any rival crime conglomerate that gets in her way, and forges alliances with some of the world's elite thieves. In my opinion, that would be a series far more empowering, compelling, and worthy of the queen of crime. Making Carmen Sandiego just another animated vigilante obfuscates her legacy as the edutainment world's most legendary bandit.

@@Icicle_158 Funnily enough, the first cartoon already established the groundwork for a criminal Carmen that you could still kind of root for; someone who enjoys the thievery, but has a strong sense of honor, no intent to cause any lasting harm, and the tendency to intentionally leave behind clues just to make things more challenging for herself.

What can I say? When I do a walkthrough, I want to do it as properly as possible. Besides, failure in this online video scene is equivalent to filler content. Thank you. Personally, I consider myself scarred from binging on TIHYDP (This Is How You Don't Play) videos and the Let's Play section of TV Tropes' "So Bad, It's Horrible" page back when I was in high school. In case you don't know what I'm talking about, Fredrik Knudsen has a fascinating documentary on an notorious let's player known as DSP, also known as Phil Burnell. Amicably put, he is the poster child for how not to operate a gaming channel. From Phil's obnoxious commentary to his dubious gameplay footage, he directly influenced me to adhere to a strenuous code of walkthrough production. But, I am editorializing. Still, I'm glad that there were channels like World of Longplays, WatchMeBeibeh, and Reiji when I started out on this site. After all, I found them to be the primary influences to my style. Of course, I am still a nobody in this scene, but they at least show a way as to how a gaming channel should operate: with surgical gameplay and thoughtful creator input - whether in the form of a comical or informative commentary in the video or its description. I hope I didn't ramble on too much. I just had to explain why I am so hyper-focused on the quality of my videos. Of course there will be certain walkthroughs that I may not be as proficient in, but I try to adhere to the notion that video editing is a gamer creator's secret weapon in their videographic arsenal. EDIT: I noticed that when I was talking about DSP it was evident that the creative choices which inhibit the quality of his work had a direct effect in teaching me how to conduct my online endeavors. Furthermore, I also realized that I should have expanded upon what the acronym "TIHYDP" means. I have justly corrected these mistakes on my part.

@@Icicle_158 I like to watch Let's Plays with commentaries, but I hate it when the commentaries are just talking about random things that have nothing to do with the game or if they talk over exposition, which is why sometimes I actually prefer ones without commentary. There's a couple of guys who did "Jumpstart 3rd Grade" and I got so annoyed with their blabbing over something that had nothing to do with the game that I couldn't get through ten minutes of it. Some players purposely show what happens when you get something wrong in order to show as much of the game as possible, but yeah, here, it's almost the same as when you win a case, just with different music, booing and the Chief telling you off for running out of time, having the wrong warrant, or arresting the wrong person. Or telling you off for letting Carmen get away since you have to recapture some of her crooks. Someone else on here had that happen to her twice during Where In The USA.
@Icicle_1585 жыл бұрын
Good point. Though I personally find it to clash with my channel's tone, I will admit that, when executed properly, commentary can provide a complementary effect toward the end result of a video's quality. Such examples of creators I am familiar with which which corroborate this include heavy hitters such as GrayStillPlays and Pitchingace88. Though they all run the gamut in terms of the nature of their performance styles, they generally share a common theme: their commentaries usually have insight on the games they play or have enough kineticism to turn their gameplay into satisfying humor. In other words, what they say in their videos is still grounded in the games they are playing. In contrast, simply babbling over critical parts of the game's plot comes across as significantly irritating for opposite reasons. It only muzzles what the viewer can get from the game and inundates them with banter that only serves to annoy, not entertain. I will also concede that failure during gameplay will occasionally dredge components of a game that would otherwise be overlooked by someone working toward a run that is as perfect as possible. Nevertheless, the purposeful recording of these sections is still different from recording bloopers because they are still a part of the video's target product, not errors which muddle the final video. Still, I also prefer walkthroughs that have as minimal commentary as possible, as so I could get the full experience from the game. However, I will make concessions toward a walkthrough with commentary if the accompanying banter is either charismatic or professorial enough to merit my attention in the first place.

@@Icicle_158 If I was to note something where they actually made fun of the game and it made the video entertaining, ravensdive was talking to someone else over "The Logical Journey Of The Zoombinis". Neither of them talked over the narrator, and then they did a very accurate imitation of the narrator's overacting with "What's THIS? My SHOELACE is untied! I better TIE it up!" Okay, so that doesn't really further the game. Someone (I forget their name) did Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego. It wasn't a funny commentary, but it was very informative and thorough. There were a few bloopers, eg: when he mixed up one-way pipes and had sewer water coming into the Roman baths, but it was in general a very nicely done commentary. Some people do longplays and then upload failure content or bonus content in other videos. Have you thought about doing that? One of the Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego bonus clips that I found on here involves you going to ACME in the last case before you've gone through all the other time periods you can visit (the last one is the Renaissance) and the fourth or fifth time you do this, the Chief is eating doughnuts, which she moves away from you, saying "No doughnuts til' you catch Carmen!"
@Icicle_1585 жыл бұрын
I personally will not upload any of my failed recordings as bonus features with my longplays, as I often purge my flash drive of them as I record (to ensure they do not clog valuable space for successful attempts). Still, I am glad that I am at least warming up to the notion of commentary videos. Although I will not implement them in my own work in the near future, I can at least now highlight instances when it is done properly and efficiently.

The irony of Carmen's plan is that she left ACME because she felt catching criminals wasn't challenging enough. To steal ACME HQ would have meant stealing would no longer be a challenge that she initially wanted in the first place.

Have you watched the new Carmen Sandiego cartoon series?
@Icicle_1585 жыл бұрын
I've seen the trailer and the series looks pretty decent. However, as much as I enjoy finding and discovering new interpretations of a character, I think that Carmen the mercurial mercenary is more interesting than a sort of Robin Hood-esque robber. Think about it. Her history with ACME, calculating intelligence, and ability to build V.I.L.E. into the series' most domineering band of bandits could make for an interesting character study in how a genius can shift alliances on her own accord. After all, the thrill of the chase is only intensified if you are quarry, not the hunter. And the fact that she basically rocketed V.I.L.E. to the top of the criminal food chain is proof positive that anyone with the drive and desire can make it to the big time. Still, the series looks impeccable. I might give it a watch over the weekend. Even the plot synopsis on Wikipedia makes it seem like a compelling crime adventure. The fact that the writers seemingly turned V.I.LE. into something akin to SPECTRE from the James Bond series merits a watch.
@RpGfreak9015 жыл бұрын
Yeah, she's not a full villain in the series, but she's not a hero either, since ACME is still after her.
@Icicle_1585 жыл бұрын
I agree. The fact that the Netflix series humanizes Carmen by depicting her as a criminal with a moral compass definitely makes her far more sympathetic than the wholehearted criminal mastermind from the video games. However, from what I could tell from game series, Carmen's heists were often domineering but done in a way so over the top that you'd have to feel impressed by the entire venture. Although they can be diabolical at times, I felt that the majority of her crimes were not done maliciously due in part to the overall tone of her v-mails to you. During these experiences, Carmen comes across not as a criminal mastermind out to create havoc, but as someone who treats it as a massive game of cat and mouse. Someone who uses her pawns and herself as a test to see if she can circumvent the actions of her prior employer. Call me nostalgic, but Carmen to me will always be viewed as the sort of person who doesn't care that her actions irk the authorities. Rather, she's someone who enjoys doing things on her own accord, despite the consequences. I guess that's why I view her more of a decorated antihero than a misunderstood ally to the police.
@RpGfreak9015 жыл бұрын
I agree that she's doing what she's doing not because she's evil but because she's challenging anyone to try and catch her if they can. She wants to find out if there's anyone as smart as she is. Well, by the end of the game, yes there is. It's you, the player.
@Icicle_1585 жыл бұрын
Good point. And that cycle likely repeats itself infinitely. In both "Where in the World..." and "Where in the USA..." the player certainly reigns triumphant as they capture Carmen and her stooges. However, when they retire and another detective takes up the reins, guess which crimson criminal is revving up for her next crime spree? Nothing will hold Carmen Sandiego down, even if ACME's army of investigators do their best to keep her at bay. This can also be seen in Word Detective and Math Detective, as Carmen basically gets away scot free, albeit with her latest invention smoldering once the player intervenes. No matter which game is scrutinized, Carmen almost always finds a way to slip through the authorities' fingers, whether by a jailbreak off screen or when a new player gets on her tail. This is what I mean when I say Carmen is mercurial. She's witty, sly, and scheming, yet also erudite enough to view any newcomer as a worthy rival. Instead of resigning to her fate, whether if her plans fail or she is thrown in prison, Carmen always finds a way to stay one step ahead of ACME.
