Here we have Phantasy Star first game in the quadrilogy of sega jRPG's tgat eventually became mostly known as an MMO. My expectations coming into this were quite mild as i'm vaguely familiar with how messy jRPG's in the 80ies were (think of final fantasy for instance), however i was very plesently surprised by just how well designed this game actually was. Pretty much every NPC serves as a hint as to what you need to do to progress. There's only like one cryptic progression block which is finding Noah behind a fake wall in his dungeon. The ground you walk on not only changes what background the battle will have but also indicates what enemy types you'll fight which you get to learn just outside of the first town. Equipment prices at stores serve as your "goal" in grinding for money as leveling doesn't increase your stats as much as new swords and such and there's only a couple equipment upgrades for each character (Noah only gets one and he still sucks) so every upgrade is a big deal. And most importantly you move fast and battles are super quick despite actually having animations unlike most 80ies turn based games. Normally in these old RPG's I have to keep my finger on fast forward to not fall asleep, here it's not needed at all. Not to mention the graphics are really pleasing, not just for an SMS game but in general they look great color choices really make everything pop and the backgrounds in battles ofnen have animations like waves on the wayer and such detail. And like mentioned before every enemy animates which wasn't a standard even on the Genesis or SNES! The smooth scrolling fake 3D dungeons are also really neat tho their simplicity can lead to navigation issues. Last but not least, you can save literally anywhere outside of combat which is just unheard of. I had a few issues playing this. The ammount of grinding involved in getting yourself up to speed... It's pretty excessive For modern standards and limited inventory is a bit annoying with how often you get item drops for stuff like flash which becomes utterly redundant by the time you get a magic lamp. Also certain magic spells, heal on Alis in particular, become a waste of space really early on as the hp recovery doesn't scale with your stats, meaning it always heals 20 hp, and since you can't recover MP aside from inns you will pretty much never use Noah's abilities... Like ever! I'd recommend playing this game in it's sega ages rerelease on smartphones, as it adds QOL improvements such as auto map which make the game much easier to navigate.

It's pretty much the best 8-bit RPG and the best Master System game. So advanced for its time.

It's amazing how detailed SMS games are in general. I was always used to the idea that all 8 bit systems looked like interpretation vomit blocks ... I mean like the NES but having played and seen a few of these SMS games i come to realize that NES games are just ugly and that system was way more primitive than SMS.

Never managed to play this one, but I always found it interesting. Just that mix of science fiction, contemporary and classic fantasy elements into one. A fascinating idea!

Okay I know my name gives what my opinion is going to be away but this is easily the best eight-bit JRPG ever made, and the most impressive production values on SMS or NES. It pretty much made owning a Sega Master System worth it all by itself, even with the seventy dollar price point, which was the most premium cost at the time. It's superior to the majority of 16-bit RPG's as well. Certainly better than Phantasy Star III, and I'd say that Phantasy Star II and IV are on par overall but I can't say that one is better than the others. Now about using automap for these dungeons; yes I can understand it relieves the pain points (especially those horrible pit-traps) and streamlines the navigation but it does detract from the formidable legacy of those structures. You got to get hardcore and chart it out on graph paper. This game truly bridged the gap between JRPG's on eight-bit systems and how they evolved on more powerful consoles. Playing through it back in 1988 it was mesmerizing and the most epic game imaginable.

Yeah going into it i expected it to be a mess of a similar caliber to Final Fantasy 1, you know more glitches than intentional mechanics, barely legible graphics, slow battles and slow exploration... But it's actually a really well designed game with nice graphics, sound design choices, never ran into any bugs. It honestly is better than most 16 bit era turn based RPG's.

@@kelliecosner1183 I think that you might mean Shining in the Darkness; that's the first in the Shining franchise and definitely required pen and paper to keep track of where you were. The game itself was okayish but not as good as I would have hoped and I maybe got just over half way through it. The Saturn follow-up Shining the Holyark was much better however.

It's a shame the Western release lacked the FM Synth compatibility. Luckily, the AGES re-release offers the FM Sound option. If you want to play the original release anyways through an emulator, my suggestion is you emulate the Japanese game with a translation patch and the FM Module activated. You won't regret it.
@nikodem123asdf2 жыл бұрын
I was wondering if i should do that gor the longplay but the fan translation changed too many elements for it to be an accurate representation of what Phantasy Star 1 is like. I don't actually mean it in a bad way, from what i read the QOL stuff in that patch are in really great but they would give the wrong impression of the original. You know stuff like more money and experience and bigger inventory.
