This game is great and a recommendation for racing fans. Truly underrated gem. Beautiful cutscenes for this era, great controls, graphics and a really good soundtrack that's entirely original (hence I didn't mute it, for once!!). Some of the stages can get challenging but you're able to change the difficulty any time so there's no need to get super frustrated over getting stuck. I've played almost every racing game for the GameCube and whilst I'm also a fan of the Need for Speed series.. I must say this is one of the best racing games released on the system. Ofcourse the PS2 library is much larger and I'm not sure how it competes on that platform, but if you own a GameCube and like racing games, get this!

It is one of the very best arcade racing games ever released but it was criticised a lot by many gamers because it was not a real driving simulator just like Gran Turismo. Of course it was not, it was intended to be a Ridge Racer style game with a storyline, I always considered it the spiritual successor of RRT4.

I played Ridge Racer 64 and this is a great Japanese Game, you must do Drift only in the most difficult curves for don't loose speed and control the car for not crush at the same time. R:Racer only increases my love for the RR Games.

The soundtrack blew my socks off. And I never expected to see a shower scene in a racing game of all places. Nice longplay, the game is surprisingly interesting. Its name doesn't hold a candle to what it's actually like.

This was like the last hurrah of the arcade racer i think. I grew up with arcade racers and didn't care about the GT that much. Id say it was worth of R4's title and the twist of having the racing models actually be the drivers themselves was a neat touch.

This brings me back a bit. Such a shame it did not have the success it deserved. With time, I come to think that it was an attempt at expanding on the Ace Combat momentum, and maybe - repeat maybe - even merge both licences in a same universe... The game engine, the dialog display, the music... AC and RRE had the same energy! Too bad it released at the same time as Gran Turismo 4, more or less. It stands on its own, IMHO.

what a dumb name for a racing game lol but i have found so enticing how banco always tried to engage players with over the top stories even for its arcade games. now i think about it, ridge racer 4 was technically called r: ridge race 4. mh.
