To me, it's a shame Disney SNES games like this can't be on the SNES Nintendo Switch Online library because of licensing issues or I'd enjoy every minute of it.

so is donald duck essentially an actor playing the character of maui mallard? or is maui mallard another one of donald's alter-ego, or some sort of under cover name? open to everyone's individual interpretation? this question has been on my mind, and if anyone has answers, they'd be greatly appreciated

I would say it's a little inception. Donald plays the Adventurer Maui Mallard wgo turns into Cold Shadow, Mauis Ninja Alter Ego
