Longplay of Shrek: Hassle at the Castle

As far as movie licensed video games go, this one based on the movie, "Shrek" is a very solid platformer. The graphics are gorgeous to look at for the system it was on. The controls are pretty fluid for the most part, but at times seem to be a bit clunky. While it follows the plot of the movie in the most general of senses, it looks to me like the developers applied some creativity to the game as a whole, working with what they had, including adding the nice option of choosing to play as more than one character. I even had a chuckle with how Shrek's Ogre Yell ability sounded, "YEEOW!" . Overall, a worthwhile game experience for the player, especially for fans of the movie.

Review: This game caught my eye because it didn't actually look like a bad game. The developers clearly wanted to make a game based off of Shrek, and weren't too worried about strictly following the plot of the movie. A lot of movie licensed games are less about the gameplay and more about following the movie's plot exactly. A controls are good, and the attacks reflect all of Shrek's moves, that he's an ogre, his bad breath, thing like that. It doesn't even look too terrible, like the developers actually put thought into the game. Some of the levels feel like cheap filler, like a 30 second level dedicated to smashing B. Additionally, the characters are a bit unbalanced, with Shrek easily being the best one. Overall, really good game, 8/10.

Shrek: Hassle at the Castle is the only game based on the first Shrek movie, as well as it is similar in gameplay to Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Bad Dream and is US counterpart of it.

Level 1 - Shrek’s Swamp *1-1 Wanted: Ogre, Reward!* Shrek is minding his business in his swamp until he is attacked by villagers trying to collect a reward. *1-2 Meeting Donkey* While on a walk, Shrek finds Donkey under siege by the guards, prompting a rescue. *1-3 Let’s Go To Duloc* Shrek and Donkey make their way to the Road to Duloc to confront Lord Farquaad. *Level 2 - The Road to Duloc* *2-1 Protect the Pig* On the way to Duloc, Shrek and Donkey sidetrack to safely guide one of the Three Little Pigs home from hungry wolves. *2-2 Find Red* Shrek and Donkey detour once again to take Little Red Riding Hood to her Grandma’s house and defeat the Big Bad Wolf. *2-3 Journey Through The Corn Field* Shrek and Donkey run through the farmlands to get to the Duloc Parking Lot. *Level 3 - Duloc* *3-1 Arriving In Duloc* Looking for directions, Shrek chases a petrified Duloc Mascot and successfully knocks his head off. *3-2 Shrek Gets His Quest* Shrek and Donkey fight several of Lord Farquaad’s soldiers in the wrestling field. *Level 4 - On The Way To The Dragon’s Castle* *4-1 The Lost Forest* Shrek and Donkey have yet another detour by saving the local children, Hansel and Gretel, from an evil Witch. *4-2 The Witch And Miss White* Another wicked witch is trying to attack Miss Snow White, and Shrek and Donkey take time to protect her. *4-3 Going To The Dragon’s Castle* Shrek and Donkey climb up the brimstone formations leading to the castle. *Level 5 - Dragon’s Castle* *5-1 Sneaking Into The Dragon’s Castle* Shrek ventures through the tumbling ruins of the castle to rescue Princess Fiona. *5-2 Escaping The Dragon’s Castle* Shrek and Fiona rush to escape the castle as Dragon is charging and breathing fire. *Level 6 - A Fork In The Road* *6-1 Princess Fiona Sings* Princess Fiona sings to a bluebird who slowly inflates before exploding. *6-2 Monsieur Hood And His Merry Men* Shrek, Donkey and Fiona beat up Monsieur Hood and his Merry Men. *6-3 Shrek’s Learns P. Fiona’s Secret* The trio rush to the windmill before sunset. *Level 7 - Rescuing Princess Fiona* *7-1 Stopping Princess Fiona’s Wedding* Shrek and Donkey return to Duloc and rush to the church while fighting previous enemies. *7-2 Objection!* Shrek discovers Fiona’s ogress form and fights the guards and Lord Farquaad himself.
