Im a longshoremen. Been in the industry for 22 years. We have seen technology take many jobs away since I have started in the industry. We use to use 10 to 12 gate clerks to receive and deliver containers on a daily basis. Sometimes more if the labor was required. We are now using 3 gate clerks and 1 problem resolution clerk to manage more or less similar volumes of containers due to advances in technology. Since such time the efficiency hasn’t changed. Wait times are at an all time high and driver turnaround depends on the bulk of work and where it is on the terminal. We are currently testing an automated system (cant say which port) which doesn’t increase those times at all. In fact it makes the process take a few minutes longer. It’s not about efficiency, it’s about companies making the most profit and minimizing the labor costs. Let’s be honest here.

As a 64 year old man who's been associated with the ILA, and working on the docks off and on for over 47 years, there's nothing more that we like to do is go to work and support this Global Supply System. Pay us what we deserve and let's move on. Everyone one can see the effect of automation in a major local shopping center, and the disaster that has developed for working people, and the success of this mechanism to the point that cashiers are getting their jobs back. "Not all automation is good automation!'

What does "Pay us what we deserve" equate to, exactly? I mean why not ask for $1000.00 or $2 million per hour? I mean let's make everybody suffer more, right?

Very fair and balanced perspective on this often contentious topic. Great job and interview.

The US Ports, ultimately operated by the ILA longshoreman, are some of the LEAST productive ports. And they want a 25% pay raise???

Ag Machines and [parts from Europe come into the US at the port of Boston that was closed due to the bridge being stuck. We ordered parts early because of a Clauss combine.
