The mail is a reproduction of armor found at Vendel and Valsgärde (6th to mid 7th century), although made of steel instead of iron. Ironically nowadays iron materials are relatively expensive, compared to steel.
This is where the maker of this test piece got the rings: www.capapie.co.uk/index.php?ro...
The weapons used in this test:
1.) Langes Messer by Nielo Swords
ww4.aitsafe.com/go.htm?go=kult...
2.) Roman gladius (mid 1990s model) from Raven Armoury
www.raven-armoury.co.uk/
3.) Type XVIIIb longsword by Lockwood (dedicated thrusting blade)
ww4.aitsafe.com/go.htm?go=kult...
4.) Spear point by Baltimore Knife & Sword (BKS)
imakeswords.com/products.htm
5.) Rondel dagger with triangular spike blade
ww4.aitsafe.com/go.htm?go=kult...

Pure circunstancial speculation: in a dire situation, if my sword gets stuck on my opponent, even it the actual wound is 2 or 1cm deep only, wouldn't ig make him awkward to have it there? In the time he my try to counter attack or even remove the stuck sword one could go to ringen and/or use a backup weapon like a dagged.

I don't really its necessary to go though to incapacitate someone with a stab like that, there is no doubt it would hurt like hell, maybe even more than the impact from a cut since the point of contact is so small. people seem to think that plate was used to protect against cuts, but if you think about it, you can't cut through mail and ganbersom anyway, so the plate will be there to protect against thrusts and arrows, and in my opinion, a just as important characteristics is that it can spread the energy from impacts though the plate, so you would feel nothing from a impact.
@autismisuncontrollable4925

A hard enough thrust, such as the one with the gladius, to the liver would be likely fatal, even without actually going through the mail; the sheer force behind it would likely be enough to cause internal bleeding. But of course, that assumes wearing *only* mail, without any padding such as a gambeson, which never happened. So, riveted mail + a proper gambeson would likely render you immune to most kinds of swords, assuming of course you only get hit in protected areas.
@JETWTF
@JETWTF 7 жыл бұрын
Plate was not created because of cuts and thrusts but because of blunt force weapons. Mail and a gambeson isn't going to do much against a Warhammer, you need something solid covering the gambeson. Plate stops the hammer and the gambeson absorbs the kinetic energy without plate the hammer is stopped by your body and your body absorbs the kinetic energy giving you a really bad day. Plate without gambeson and the body absorbs the kinetic energy and you get some blunt force trauma.

Yes, but by moving your body side- or backwards you can negate a fair bit of the impact force. Plus Skall thrusted with all his force without having to wonder, what happens afterards. In real combat an opportunity to thrust like shown in the video was probably rare. Most likely you wouldn't commit as much into most of your thrusts, as you would just be too open, if your thrust was not lethal.
@Skallagrim
@Skallagrim 7 жыл бұрын
Committing to an attack does not necessarily expose you, if done right. Proper body mechanics rather than overswinging and stumbling about like they do in movies and video games. :)
@test-tf8wt
@test-tf8wt 7 жыл бұрын
I was not talking about overswinging, but the fact alone that your weapon might be stuck in the maille a bit is already enough to give your opponent an advantage in a fight. So yes, if done properly, a thrust will not completely expose you but still hinder your ability to return to a defensive stance/guard immiediately and therefore expose you for a maybe half a second? or even less, but it still might be enough to give your foe an advantage in the fight.

From this and other armor tests I've watched, it seems as if armor all around is extremely effective against most or all contemporary weapons. How did casualties get inflicted in ancient and medieval times then? How were the battles decided if severe or fatal injuries were rare? And what allowed the historical battles with high casualty counts given that armor was so good? I'm shocked at how effective armor is given that I know a lot of people died in battle.

A very interesting test. Remember, though, that only an inch or so of penetration by a steel is actually a worse injury than most of us will ever suffer in life. That sword or spear thrust to the chest would crack a rib, and to the abdomen would double a man over, winded. A hit that is bad enough to incapacitate the enemy and give you "a free shot" has done its job.

When watching these tests, I often think about how difficult it is to know for sure, since we are using modern quality iron, which is (relatively) pure. At the time period, I imagine that the actual quality of steel could have varied greatly, meaning some armors would not be quite as strong as others, even when made in the same shape and form. It could be interresting to make actual replicas with a similar quality iron, that they would actually have used for making armor, and then do thrust tests, and see how big a difference the quality of iron actually does.
@farmerboy916

good point, but the ammount o bleeding should be nearly irrelevant to a skilled user, there are a lot of vital organs in the Torso area, the question would be how quick does it kill rather than is it lethal I'd guess. Anyways I'd love to see that timeline as well.

Skall, I found this most educational. But as for the weight on the frame, I'd leave it as it is. Why? The fact that some of your momentum is transferred to it in such way may (I think) dissipate the impact pretty much like how an actual opponent would try to deflect or dodge your attack. In conclusion: I think the results on a stand like this may give a better representation than hitting a target on a firm and solidly placed stand.
@sffc95
@sffc95 7 жыл бұрын
Not necessarely, I get your point but you have to consider that the stand doesn't represnt the weight of a person, nor the distribution of said weight. If the center of mass is lower, then it's much harder to tumble it. A more interesting experience would be using the prosthethics he got (at least just the chest), and build a makeshift dummy with legs and average weight, so that he could test how much a stab or a shove would actually be able to make someone who is intentionally lowering the cnter of gravity fall

@sffc95
@sffc95 7 жыл бұрын
True, hence why I said makeshift. It's not very important to have sensors on the Heads, Shoulders Knees and toes... knees and toes. However, with some wood, pen and paper and some weights it could be possible to replicate a human's distribution of weight, and also use the prostethics as visual cues. Thus effectively simulating how a real blow would be (as long as the dummie is in a fighting stance)

Thanks for the comments. An added piece of detail to explain my question. I'd assumed that as armor advanced swords became less useful against a fully armored knight (not speaking of much less armored troops.). But what surprised me is a lot of the tests I've seen on KZbin of maces, pollaxes, warhammers, and other weapons is that they also seemed to not deliver substantial damage past the armor - especially for plate armor and helmets. So for example you hit the guy with the mace, and between his armor and the leather or fabric under it, the enemy isn't really hurt. Or so it seems from the tests I've seen. Similarly, spike type attachments you might find on a war hammer or similar weapon don't get through the armor and fabric to a meaningful, combat useful degree. This even though I'd always heard those weapons were developed because armor had made swords useless. Of course, tests are hard to make identical to real world conditions.

Hi Skall, I was curious, have you seen the new Mainz pattern gladius being offered by Condor? And if so, do you have any early impressions based on the description or pictures they have put out? Based on my experience with Condor I would expect it to be a good entry level gladius (for use in test cutting etc), but I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

I think that those depictions of mail failing so spectacularily simply were depictions of the extraordinary, because that is what interests people even nowadays. People probably knew that ordinarily, armor wouldn't fail.

Skall, do you have any videos about what mailed/armored combat might actually look like on a battlefield? Would there be a lot of repeatedly trying to manage to do some lethal/disabling damage and repeatedly failing due to protective equipment, not perfect techique and weaponry, and parrying (and thus an enormous drain of stamina with each dude you avoid being killed by)?

hey skall,i saw you did a energy sword vid recently and i wanted to know what you think of energy weaponry from warhammer 40k? an energy sword in 40k is basically a regular sword,with blade hilt guard and everything, but in the handle it has a force field generator that creates a forcefield along the edge,wich allows the sword to cut almost everything with almost no effort

Someone please answer At 0:44 in the slow mo the sword "bends" kinda like its "flimsy". I put those in " s because im not sure if that's how swords are supposed to be (dont see many people with one straped to their hip). So are swords supposed to be like that? If so why?
@Skallagrim

Yes, tempered steel is supposed to flex and spring back to its original shape. If it didn't then it would either permanently bend or break.

I know this is a stupid question but what would classify as sword as a sword breaker such as a long sword probably mispronounced that but something that would have so much mass behind it could break a weaker blade

On the historical depictions/accounts is it possible that low grade or poorly maintained equipment combined with constant damage (Such as some of the strikes you've shown that dealt damage to the mail) could eventually lead to some of these things occurring? Even if infrequently?
@jklm011
@jklm011 7 жыл бұрын
Skall as i've seen the rondel dagger lately it feels weird the way you are using it because of the position of the target compared to the grip you are using (ice pick(?)). Have you thought about making a platform that would allow you to strike downward with daggers, so as if you were stabbing someone's neck or shoulders (which maybe makes sense for the referenced grip). Or am I not considering something?

Dear Skall, Seeing as you're working the spear, I have a humble request: Could you perhaps do some tests on one-handed spear usage? Maybe both overarm and underarm, and with and without shield? And with and without a buttspike (if you have something like that available)? That would be absolutely awesome, I'd really appreciate that, and I'm sure many other viewers would, too! Keep up the good work!

So I have a question. Would you see mail like this more frequently sewn onto a leather jacket or a gambeson, or just standalone as a hauberk? Would it even be a good idea to sew mail onto something like that?
@HoundXXII

Skal, you talked about making some cheap ballistics gel in you're previous video. You should make some in a large rectangle, throw some gambeson on it, then mail and do some similar tests to show the proven effectiveness of it.

@leoscheibelhut940 3 жыл бұрын
I think that the movement that your setup allowed is a better analogy to thrusting at a man than most tests that are better secured. In actual combat, an armed man would often be pushed back before the mail gave way to the thrusting blade, saving the man.

You mention at the end historical accounts of spears completely running through someone in chainmail - but those could easily be a different case, instead of a simple spear thrust it could be a braced spear against a charging opponent running himself through by shear momentum.
