Thanks for this video! I've started just practicing hema by myself cause there are no clubs where I live, and this was very helpful

Many clubs, including Blood and Iron, have begun offering live online classes. It's not the same as in person group classes, but it's pretty good.

@@scottmacgregor3444 yeah, I looked into their online classes and I really wish I was able to take them, but I'm from Brazil. In my currency, it's a bit expensive for me right now, unfortunately. There's a pretty good club here that I've been in contact with, although they are located on the other side of the country. But they do offer online classes and I take them whenever I can

@@cryptia Great! It's good to see people that look for solutions rather than just staring at the problem.

@@scottmacgregor3444 Yeah, I just take advantage of the fact that we have a lot of channels like Blood and Iron sharing info, so I just absorb knowledge from a lot of places, including the manuals, of course, test and practice what I've learned, etc, in the old-fashioned way :D

@@cryptia I would recommend sending us an email to inquire about online classes anyway that way we can list you as an interested party. cheers

I am not so sure about the edge upwards position. It presents the edge so it can receive damage and you cannot easily transition to Zwerhaw from that. In my club, we do Ochs with flat and with thumb on bottom of the Schilt.
@BloodandIronHEMA
@BloodandIronHEMA 3 жыл бұрын
The issue with that is that it puts undue stress on your thumb joint and will lead to serious injury. a friend of ours had to have reconstructive surgery on both his thumbs from damage received blocking in this fashion and he was a champion competitor too. Edge to edge is always stronger. flat Ochs is very dangerous to use against a strike. it's better utilized for blade manipulation but the initial impact defence is always on the edge
@davidvuong9128
@davidvuong9128 3 жыл бұрын
You have to learn to quickly switch between edge upwards and flat upwards thumb grip while in ochs. The edge always faces where you're striking or where you're blocking/parrying.
@zakremmington6297
@zakremmington6297 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry about the edge receiving damage, it means it's done its job. Swords are nothing more than tools that if used will get damaged and eventually need to be replaced so don't worry about it. Also ideally you should be blocking with the strong of your sword which isn't the cutting portion anyway so shouldn't make it a less effective in the cut anyway.

@@BloodandIronHEMA Hmmm. Can we agree that Ochs is the final position of a Zwerhaw? Anyway, was he doing a Zwer when he received that injury?
@stephenkime5946
@stephenkime5946 3 жыл бұрын
@@screaminggoblin36 This is also an incorrect assumption as Ochs is a position used to impede and defend against incoming descending cuts. A Zwerch if used properly will both deflect and strike simultaneously. By stopping the cut in Ochs you are stopping or robbing the Zwerch of cutting potential. a zwerch should dominate the opponents cutting line not stop at it.
