It only took KZbin 56 years to recommend this video. I should send a telegram to their complaint desk.

The term "Patch" comes from errors in punch cards, tape was used to patch a hole so they could reuse the tape/card
@maestososhifu2 жыл бұрын
Eh, I mean the phrase "patching something up" predates punch cards

To think it once took a computer almost THREE HOURS to draw a picture of a cat asking for a cheeseburger!

They are making magnetic core memory at 4:22 Each of those little round things she is pushing the wire through is a magnet that can store one bit.
@tkboyd39257 жыл бұрын
And each little ring needed THREE wires through it.... Buy a "core memory" module on eBay, while you still can. An amazing technology. (I had to edit that... originally I had "Buy a bit of...") en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic-core_memory

"Ernie" was no computer at all but an industrial mercury vapor rectifier.

This piece of hardware is a gas neon diode used as noise generator. The R & N in ERNIE stands for Random Number. ERNIE was a Colossus digital computer.

Almost looks like a set from an Irwin Allen TV show.

I ❤these Rank Look At Life videos from the 60’s I have a connection with this one as my wonderful late mother worked for a company as a punch card operator from 1970 till around 1980 🏴🏴🇬🇧🇬🇧

What a complete crock we’ve been sold. Punch cards, tapes we never understood even that. Now they harvest info from our every move as we drones buzz about the hive.

2:04 "they can 02:07 deal only with things which can be 02:09 expressed in numbers " I was going to argue that point but then I looked at the formatting of the quoted text. LOL Still, I prefer mechanical analogue computers working with analogue variables like speed an torque - a bit like the computers in an Invacar calculating the correct drive ratio for engine speed and power for the speed of the vehicle.
