This vid is GREAT......Boston & Maine GP40-2 #316 in full Blue paint as the Portsmouth switcher runs from Portsmouth to Rockingham Jct. NH and return on 06/24/1991. Crazy switching moves, a dog chases the train and even a B&M Caboose at the end in Portsmouth yard. Video by Richard 'Moose' Ouellette. If you like our stuff, Please comment and/or subscribe!

Great video. There's nothing like New England branchline railroading.

Ahhh Still like watching these Craig from my years with Moose going on many of these Railfanning trips, and showing him my back yard and the operations with the Salem, Wakefield and Portsmouth Switchers, I always loved the back road Branchline stuff to Railfan !! We got to talk some time so I can get some full copies made since loosing mine in my flood years ago ! Those trips around the Salem and Walefield Switchers and the M&L and GE's in Maine etc will never be seen again !! Thanks for keeping these Craig !! : D

From the time of this video, in 1991, it's amazing how in the 14 years of the 316's life, it has gone from prime mainline power to secondary branchline power. And not well cared for either! By 1998 it would be off the roster and sold to HATX and resold to Canadian Pacific.

Gosh, this is a great video. I'm watching it from south Florida and saw the old Armour Meat Packing Building I used to drive out of during the summer break from Plymouth State College. I remember the "lard shed" and we would stack case upon case on Friday, only to have to pick it all up again Monday morning after the stack would collapse from a hot summer weekend. Love those old memories and trains.

Once again I am so grateful to you for sharing this footage. B&M 316 worked in Connecticut, and I have some photos of it on the Terryville Loop Track. Great video. Again thank you.

Joe That would be so amazing to see more historical stuff from the elder B&M years. So much of their work in and around the Boston area, and the western Mass and Conn. areas has been reduced greatly over the years to very few remaining scattered customers, I'd love to see what some of these old town and city locals used to look like.

TheGomes412 Well, the B&M hauled a lot of boxcars for Sara Lee and corn syrup for Peter Paul (PP used to produce Mounds and Almond Joys in Naugatuck) as recently as 2006 but it moved production to Mexico. The last customer on the Torrington Branch was Stone Container-more boxcars. You can go on NERail and look up Carl Weber Jr.'s photos of the B&M in Connecticut before and after Guilford. He even has some photos of Conrail in Waterbury, Terryville and Plainville before it handed over operations to the B&M.

Great video! I grew up on Bartlett St., just down the street from Portsmouth Yard. Spent countless hours watching those blue Geeps switching the yard, and lifting & dropping gondolas at the scrap yard at the state pier. If only I'd owned a movie and/or video camera to record it all!

WOW! You did a great job. I live in NH, so I know a lot of the spots your filming from. But I haven't been lucky enough to catch trains there. I know some of those lines are no longer in service. Thanks for posting them. Great job.

Hi Criag, This was a fun day with Moose helping him to get to know the Portsmouth Switcher and its branches, it is very interesting area and to this day Mar.2016 is like old B&M era branchline railroading ...sadly the Hampton,NH line has been closed some years back. Wow 1991 I was 24 then !! The "Nuke DOD train" still goes to Kittery, ME about twice a year it seems ... the last time I saw it they went by where I live in Exeter, NH coming from Portsmouth in December 2015. At (4:42) that's Greenland,NH station just off Rt.33, behind us is the Mercedes Benz dealer. From here to Rock.Jct. there are 4-5 nice little back roads to catch the switcher on you have to know the area to catch them all but train speed is a nice slow 5 mph ... it's like 50 yrs ago running back here ! The view at (7:24) has been blocked with $800,000 to 1.5 million dollar homes sadly, and the Portsmouth yard is much smaller and the old turntable has been dug up. Thanks Craig. : )

Great info / comments / insight Ronnie thanks. If it weren't for these vids that RO shot & Craig posted, I could only imagine (or hope to remember) what things were like. I'm still in only the early stages of modeling this road and timeframe in N, so again I appreciate your comments on top of the vids.
