One of diesel traction's greatest mysteries is how classes 58 & 60 have faired so poorly, whilst 56s - which they were designed to replace - have not only survived but have made a comeback. Bizarre... Excellent video. Thanks for sharing.

I was at Doncaster works open day when they were building these locos, and I cabbed one to have a look inside, the tradesmen were telling me how these locos were also worthy of exporting to other countries, they certainly looked impressive to us at that time.

I remember when I lived near the Midland Main Line in the shadow of Ratcliffe power station when the 58's were being introduced. Probably route learning for Asfordby mine, one of our super new collieries like Selby to keep us energy sufficient for hundreds of years. Height of my career, young family and looking forward. Looking back I could never have believed what is happening today. I wouldn't mind but we are importing coal and oil now and always will as we only now seem able to recruit Governments who....................!

Looking at this I would say possibly turbochargers need attention or could be fuelling issues, worn cams ,pumps or injectors. But it’s good to see one running again , It would be good to see it on some main line work at some time in the future .

I think there's 3 bones in the UK potentially 4, but there are 4 in a siding in Spain and another which survived the mass butchering in France.

Class 58. Caused cost and disruption in moving 56 build donny to crewe. Foreign sales (a big hope for the class, ) nil. Basicly not as good as the class 56 they 'superceded' and withdrawn relatively early. A pretty poor investment really. BUT that said its good that they survive in preservation.
@jamesjosephjjdyer3368Ай бұрын
I was watching it on the SVR live cam and the crowd was so big you might be forgiven if it was tornado, flying Scotsman but no it was a class 58 and tho we all know about climate change you be forgetting that this was a bit from the 1970's when most earlier diesel Locomotives let out a lot of clag. I was saying to a friend of mine about a diesel Locomotive which is being rebuilt from Class 37272. It is infact a Class 23 D5910 or if you prefer a not a baby deltic as such but a baby 37 tho if it be popular than the Class 58 we have to wait meny more years before it's finished. On a mainline station on which safety 🦺 is key at an heritage railway people should know the dangers and respect others as well especially when you want to get that perfect photo as there's plenty of other advantage along the line.

Cracking video! Just don’t show it Greta Thunberg! Don’t recall them being quite that claggy in service, so the earlier comment may be correct in that there is further work to be done on the engine. But isn’t it just great to see a 58 running again!? Seeing 023 on the move the other week at Leicester persuaded me to join the Class 58 Group. They do need more support to get 58016 on the move. 016 is theirs, while they are looking after 023 for a private owner. Keep up the good work!
@LucaBaronBaileyАй бұрын
Could it just be claggy as it's old and needs the engine to be run in again?
