If you notice the handle is "FG stag handles" These would be a type of black plastic jigged to look like stag. By the mid point of the war, most knife handles were moving to plastic handles as they proved more robust. The knives with Steel liners were mid war production (late 1942-early 1944) If the knife had bone, stag, or wood covers with brass liners they were most likely made pre war or early war. By mid 1944, the brass restrictions were eased and late war knives once again received brass liners but handles remained jigged plastic until the stainless steel liners showed up on Mil-J (later Mil-K) knife. Incidentally, some of the late war Camillus knives even had a 3 line tang stamp! The sub contract might have been Camillus subcontracting out to another knife company to fill their quota (Camillus supplying the parts, another company supplying the labor).

Excellent research Tom, thanks so much for posting this. Shrouded in history past is that first drawing of the Engineers knife without the can opener notch in the frame. In the 1930's at least one manufacturer was making knives like that, I'm thinking there were others but idk. Western States (who eventually devoted 100% of their manufacturing to the war effort ) had that same knife in their 1936 catalog called the Compo Scout X350 available in Pearl or Stag. It had no notch in the handle BUT the cap lifter blade was in front of the main blade not behind it as shown in your research. So a better informed person than me may have more info but my thinking is the notch was a feature that did come later. Great post Tom!
