@@chonqmonk Sure, it may not be immediately, but looking at the fighting styles, of the three current ozeki he would seem closest, he's more all-round than either Takakeisho or Hoshoryu at this point in time, so I don't see it as too fanciful to suggest that even if he doesn't win in January he would still be the one expected to make it to yokozuna next. After all Takakeisho has had the chance several times and not succeeded in it so it's not surprising if people start to lose faith in him getting there, especially as his style and build doesn't really seem to support longevity.

When Kirishima said Atamafuji was nervous and didn't look him in the eye, I noticed that about him on the final day against Kotonowaka. Guess he still need a bit more experience and mature. As for Kirishima, I think he has a huge chance of becoming Yokozuna on the next Basho. I think we just need a new Yokozuna at this point

I've been following Kirishima since he debuted in Makuuchi in 2020. I felt bad for him when he was promoted to Komusubi in 2021 and then lost it. But he made steady progress, no doubt with Kakuryu's excellent training and regained the rank in September 2022. He's so low key that many were surprised when he made Sekiwake and won the tournament in March 2023. His injury blemished his Ozeki debut in July but he came back strong in September. Needless to day, I wasn't expecting that he'd earn his second championship so quickly. He's confident, not arrogant and appears to be a great Ozeki role model. And now he's officially on his Yokozuna run. I hope he gains the top rank in 2024. There's so much happening in the top 2 divisions to watch for in 2024. I can't wait for the January 2024 basho.

Kirishima made his first championship since he became an Ozeki and the second since March 2023, by defeating Takakeisho in his attempt to become a Yokozuna and after escaping from kadoban (demotion) in July, due to injuries and he retained his second highest rank in September of the same year, but there is a huge possibility that Kirishima will become the next Yokozuna if he gets a second championship back-to-back or a zensho yusho (15 wins), before reaching to the top of Makuuchi (sumo's highest rank).

An ozeki needs to win 2 tournaments in a row while displaying "dominant sumo". So if kirishima gets another 13 and 2 in Jan he will very likely be yokozuna. It is ultimately decided by council but there are guidelines they follow.,
@sgtjyf01
@sgtjyf01 11 ай бұрын
@@MrGoombasticveryFantastic Not necessary, suppose he wins with a 11-4 or 10-5 score, the council might not see this as a convincing win. Any 12-3 and above, he will surely get it. That being said, JSA is desperate for a Yokozuna since Terunofuji is close to retiring. So in reality, if Kirishima wins the Hatsu Basho - He will certainly be Yokozuna regardless the score.
@sgtjyf01
@sgtjyf01 11 ай бұрын
He needs to win the basho. Not just number of wins. Even if he gets a 14-1 score and still loses the play-off, he wouldn't be Yokozuna.
@MrGoombasticveryFantastic
@MrGoombasticveryFantastic 11 ай бұрын
@@sgtjyf01 Kind of my thinking on it I feel like an 11 win basho isnt going to cut it again for awhile plus it seems like they want Teru gone sooner rather than later. Taka had his shot and blew it again now to see if Kiri can take advantage of the situation and get promoted

@@SonofSkyrim01 His physique is like Harumafuji's but his fighting style is similar to Kakuryu's. Harumafuji was a Yokozuna with probably the fastest tachiai ever and won by taking the initiative but Kakuryu was the exact opposite he reacted to how his opponent fought and changed his style. There were many instances where Harumafuji was already at his opponent's throat even before his opponent got up even though they touched the dohyo with their hands at the same time. The guy was an absolute machine.
