Looking Back At The CRAZY Andrew Wiggins Trade, 2 Years Later

Күн бұрын

Nearly two years ago (February 6th, 2020), the Timberwolves and Warriors made a surprise trade that quickly became one of the most polarizing moves in recent memory. I say surprising because even though there was A LOT of buzz around the Timberwolves acquiring D’Angelo Russell at the time - even going back to the prior offseason, in which he was free agent - it seemed like trade talks between the two teams had stalled.
We were focused on other things during that 2020 trade deadline - like Andre Drummond getting dumped on the Cavs in exchange for nothing (remember that?) or the Clippers acquiring Marcus Morris from the Knicks… but the most interesting deal was yet to come.
In the end, the Warriors convinced the Timberwolves to send them Andrew Wiggins (and the massive max contract he came with), along with a protected 1st round pick in exchange for D’Angelo Russell.

As a Wolves fan, I think it's a win-win. DLo's new defensive impact (weird to say) and playmaking stabilize this team. He essentially is the quarterback of our defense and offense, communicating and getting people where they need to be. Wiggins has been great this year for the Warriors, something he would never have done here. Frustrated that's the case but happy for him.

@@jaketheslumpgod the wolves aren’t doing anything with dlo as a major piece and kat as number 1. He’s too nice, kat is to the wolves what AD was to the the pelicans, great talent that can’t carry a team to anything meaningful. Put a cutthroat competitor capable of being that number 1 guy (*cough* jimmy butler *cough*) and yeah, the wolves are dangerous. But come on lol the warriors picked on the little guy desperate to get a mid tier pg talent to keep kat around that they traded way too much, as exemplified by them throwing in the first rounder last second. Leave it to the wolves to be in a situation like that where mental gymnastics somehow justifies the trade being a win. Just because it helped you doesn’t mean it didn’t help your opponent much more, thus creating an even greater separation of talent, making your chances even worse. I’m sorry but it’s just facts.

Yeah... this shows that no one watches wolves games. Dlo is probably the reason why this team is doing well defensively... not to mention when he doesn't play, the team is lost both offensively and defensively and loses games eventually. As soon as Dlo was out of the game vs GS last game, they just crumbled because their defensive rotations were so late and couldn't get easy open looks on offense. This man is easily an all star if you look at "impact on winning" like ppl do with Wiggs but since he plays in a small market and for a franchise that has been considered poverty forever, no one cares. Tragic.

I'd still take Dlo over Wiggs any day given how inconsistent Wiggs was on the team and while Dlo can still be inconsistent offensively, he still has a much bigger impact compared Wiggins when he was here. Our offensive rating and Defensive Rating literally plummets when Dlo is out and it's obvious we need him. As for the pick, it had to be included, Wiggs could have been a bust and Im sure the Warriors Front office forced our front office to give it up, we were definitely close to keeping the pick if we didnt go on a winning streak

He’s also acting like Wiggins became a true ALL STAR as if he’s a top 20 player in the league. Which he is not. He’s an nba all star right now bc he’s on a team with a global fan base and the majority of the calculation for all star is simply fan voting. The team has tons of fans who vote for players that haven’t even played in the season as long as they wear their jersey. It’s a global fan base. That’s the ONLY reason Wiggins is a freaking all star. Is he having a plaid season, of course. He is not a top 20 player in the league or god even anywhere close. Which is what normally “he’s an all star” means. That was pre-pandemic too, however I too recall the day extremely well. I was getting my car smog’d after a new battery and had to drive 100 miles to get it done but only had that day off to do it, so there was a lot of sports talk radio/podcast to be heard that afternoon for *this* guy. At first it was just a nice fit, GSW had an aging core, and didn’t really have a forward aside from 6’6 Draymond. Wigs right off the bat was a good fit due to being a young NBA caliber starter. Having a 25yo premier athlete around Steph/Klay/Dray(all over 31yo then, now they’re pushing 34[steph]and 32[Dray+Klay]). It was great that he was still open to working on improving. Folks forget he had about 15 games that season to familiarize himself with the system. If you remove just Kelly Oubre’s first 10 games as a warrior, the rest of the season looks great. 17.6/6.1/1.2 on 37% from 3. He went 7/55in his first 10 games adjusting to Kerr’s system, and it was Steph’s first 10 games back from his broken hand injury that limited him to 5 games the prior season. It’s a shame, as Oubre’s stats with those first 10 games looks bad. 15/6/1 with just over 30% from 3. It really was just a rough start with a new team, and everyone that doesn’t check game logs on basketballreference just see’s the season as a whole, but in reality Oubre was nearly as good as Wigs last year. Wigs was 2/5.2 from 3 a night, Oubre was 1.9/5.1, but Oubre doesn’t fit? I actually thought for a minute that we’d trade Wiggins for Siakam or whatever then re-sign Oubre to around $15m-$17m a year, getting near-Wiggins production from a more aggressive player(Oubre thinks he’s always the best player on the court, while coaches and trainers have said Wiggins sure is Canadian, and that he’ll apologize after dropping 40pts.) I feel like a Steph/Klay/Oubre/Siakam/Dray lineup would be just as good, if not better than anything lineup they run this year. Oubre was 85%-90% as good as Wigs and a year younger. And this year he’s still around 12 FGA’s a game, but he finally went from 5 3PA’s and 7 2PA’s to 7 3PA’s and 5 2PA’s, which was key for him to get where he’s at now. I’m sure Utah is kicking themselves for not trying to add Oubre last summer. He’s a great fit for them, especially after the run in they had with the Clippers in the playoffs. Ingles, Gay, Conley, and Bogdanovic are all well over 30 and offensive minded players. When Rudy’s ran off the court, 6’4 Royce O’Neal is the only legit defender left to guard wings and those 6’8 guys on the other team were fine with that setup. Oubre would’ve been an injection of youth and athleticism akin to what Wigs adds to GSW’s aging core. Plus, I think a lineup of Mitchell/O’Neal/Ingles/Oubre/Gay would be even better than Utah’s current small ball lineup, and they’re a top 3 offense this year. Oubre could’ve been the vertical threat and fast break monster of their dreams. Plus with having a rim protector like Gobert, Oubre and O’Neal would have free reign to go for steals. Whereas the last few years, Gobert has been let down by his perimeter defenders, Utah could’ve made perimeter D a strength with one addition. Plus, moving forward, Mitchell, Oubre and Gobert fit pretty well together, especially with Oubre’s increase in 3pt volume… … … My bad, idk how I got on about Oubre…anyways, enjoy your day!!

People were questioning why Golden State would take a chance on Andrew Wiggins in the hopes that he could impact the team. Fast forward 2 years: he’s an All-Star Starter, and he’s been one of the main reasons for their success outside the trio of Steph, Klay, and Dray, as well as key depth pieces such as Poole, GP2, Looney, Kuminga, Moody, Porter, and Iguodala. D’angelo runs the offence and defence of the Timberwolves, he is extremely valuable to them. It is clear you don’t watch the games as Russel could be considered as an all-star just off of sheer impact to the team, but because they are a small market, it doesn’t go under notice. Before making foolish claims such as that he’s “just there to keep Towns happy”, have a little fact check, and check how well the Wolves do with vs without Dlo. When pressure is on him to lead the team, he stays away from it. He can't handle the pressure. He is not worthy of an all star position. He is a great 3rd or 4th option but not a 2nd option player. Dlo has been the main reason why the Wolves offense has been #1 since January. He is becoming a great leader on the offensive side and defensive side.

Stats does show wolves struggled without Dlo throughout the season. With Wiggins, you are paying max money for a 3 and D guy essentially. He doesn't bring any leadership to help the team win. He fits well with GSW bc of Curry, Poole, and Thompson taking the pressure off of him. Wiggins struggled in stretches bc he lacks motivation and shy away when he has to start carrying the team. There isn't a world where you can say the Wolves straight up lost the deal if you are actually diving into things. Wiggins wasn't good with Minnesota, but D'Lo is. In fact, D'Lo has the highest win% of any Wolves player this year. He has also been the MLB of their defense and you can see how the team had fallen apart when D'Lo didn't play. You could also see how the offense started to struggle with him out, there wasn't anybody that could create shots for others on the court (very reminiscent of when Wiggins was their guy) and that is something that the Wolves need with KAT as their #1 guy. The Wolves couldn't keep Wiggins and D'Lo easily the best they were going to get in return (especially considering they had a superstar that they didn't want to leave in free agency. Also, I know this was technically a separate trade and actually happened earlier, but the Wolves did also end up with Juancho (who was used to get Patrick Beverly, the perfect guy to go alongside Russell), Malik Beasley, and DPOY candidate Jarred Vanderbilt. Had this D'Lo for Wiggins talk never started, none of those guys would be on that team. A much better trade in the grand scheme of things for the Timberwolves that it may look like at face value (though it doesn't look like a bad trade at face value either).

It sucks that the Timberwolves lost the #7 pick in the trade which I think automatically means the warriors win the trade, but DLo has been extremely valuable to the wolves and obviously so has Wiggins for the warriors. Wiggins was never like this on the wolves but he’s in a new role and culture where he is thriving, DLo has been the wolves defensive leader which is weird to say but despite his inconsistency shooting he brings a skill set Wiggins never was capable of providing. Wow... 4 months later, and look where we are. TWolves make the playoffs as the 7th seed, KAT is happy, and the Warriors in the Finals again while setup nicely for the future. Definitely a win-win trade for both teams. Looking back, you did a great job breaking down the brilliance of Warriors GM, Bob Meyers. He took a FA player in Durant, who wasn't going to resign with the Warriors and turned that into a future top 10 draft pick. That's all the Warriors were looking to accomplish. As for Wiggins, I'm sure the Warriors thought the could carry him for a few years and then trade him for another draft pick, ultimately giving them 2 picks for Durant. But leave it to the Warriors coaching staff and veterans to realize what they had in Wiggins and truly steal the trade. They got the draft capital to win in the future (JK), and the player they needed to win now in Wiggins. Warriors are not going to the Finals without Wiggins helping get them there.

Every twolves fan knew that once wiggins got to a team with other elite perimeter creation threats (better than old Jeff Teague and Ricky rubio) and in a better coaching situation (Saunders had no idea what to do and Thibs had a great scheme but was terrible at teaching it to new players, which is why he has taj gibson and derrick rose and all his teams), wiggins was going be a far more efficient offensive player. In essence wiggins just has to be a 3 and D player and make cuts on 95 percent of the time he's on the floor in Golden State. In Minnesota they asked him to be the offensive engine, which lead to him leaning on iso scoring for a meh offensive efficiency for the whole team. He can't do more than make the obvious pass.

People don't like looking at things in context. 1) D'Lo has had the best season of his career as far as intangible stuff for winning games goes, and that's shooting a career low percentage. 2) Wiggins is an all-star starter simply by association with one of the best teams of the last decade and playing next to the best floor spacer in the league history and a perrenial MVP candidate. 3) Believe it or not, Wiggins was always a decent-good man defender, even when he played for the Wovles 4) Kuminga will be better than Wiggins in about 1-2 years because he has a much better motor(something Wiggins always lacked and still does to this day). I am sorry guys, but as a Wolves fan, I don't see any difference from Wiggins on the Warriors and I was a pretty big backer of him on the Wolves. Generally speaking, I vastly disagree when a bunch of average players(yes, Wiggins by all means is an average league starter getting paid superstar money) make the ASG just because they come from the top team. It's basically an unwritten rule that the top 2-3 teams in each conference deserve to have 2-3 Allstars per team, regardless of their actual efficiency and performance. The bottom line is, it was a no brainer for GS as D'lo was a bad fit and absolutely redundant. As far as the Wolves go, D'lo is about as good of a fit as you can get from a skill/personality/leadership standpoint. Like other people said, it's a win-win, even if it is a bigger win for the Dubs. I think luck was a huge component because the Wolves didn't have even "average" league health last year(we can clearly see they are better than their record last year when healthy) so they didn't expect to lose a high draft pick. P.S. Sorry for a freaking paragraph. Love and appreciation to whoever bothered to read it.

I’m sorry but the Warriors won this trade by a long shot. The hardest slot to fill in the NBA is the small forward. Every team is looking for a 3 and D wing with length. Wiggins not only is able to guard the other teams best player like Doncic, but he shoots 40% from 3 and has insane athleticism. And the PG spot is one of the easiest to fill. But in todays NBA you need one that can shoot and score. Dlo isn’t a terrible shot from 3 but is an overall inefficient scorer. Not to mention Kuminga being one of the more exciting prospects in the NBA. Every team in the league would take what the Warriors got. The Warriors have an embarrassment of riches. To make the finals and have a young core of Kuminga, Poole, Wiseman and Moody. They’re set even after their big 3 retire

Then you run this exact same tree except between the Nets and Minnesota. Imagine the potential effect on the Nets. I don’t think it’s a stretch to argue that the Nets would never trade for Harden and might have found themselves in the finals instead of the Celtics! One can argue that Kevin Durant trying to squeeze out more money for himself handed a title to Golden State and prevented him from having a shot at one himself.

5:35 it’s always overlooked, but another reason for Wigs’ value to the GSW is his combo of age and athleticism. With Curry over 33, and Dray+Klay pushing 32 and the latter coming off two big injuries, having a 6’7/200lb, 2-way, premier athlete at the wing is immensely valuable. A guy they don’t have to worry about rest days or whether or not his minutes should be adjusted after a back-to-back, etc. Aside from KD, the Warriors have had a pretty big hole at the SF position, and, when your tallest guy after the 6’9 Looney(at the time) is only 6’6, a guy with a little size is really helpful. 18/5 on 40%+ from 3 is a huge bonus. With Steph at 6’3, and Dray+Klay at 6’6, a couple 6’7-6’8 dudes in their early-to-mid 20’s goes a LONG WAY. Those fast long dudes can run around all night and do anything from chasing rebounds to off ball cuts to easy dunks/layups at the rim(Wigs has a career high 74% at the rim this year). Otto Porter was a great pickup too, but I’d prefer to move Wiseman for a Saddiq Bey type. Basically a younger Robert Covington would be great for them. Kuminga looks like he can replace some of Draymond’s defense as the years progress, and be at least a 16/7/2-a-night kind of player. Moody has been 27/6/2 while shooting 47%-37%-90% in 32mpg for Santa Cruz, and could see a promotion next season as GSW’s FA’s are Damion Lee, Gary Payton II(RFA), Kevon Looney, Otto Porter, Nemanja Bjelicia, Iggy, and Toscano-Anderson. Warriors do have the bird rights for Lee, Looney, and JTA, while GP2 and Bjelicia very likely to return on 1yr deals at 105% of their current deals. Otto Porter Jr. is the only one I’m worried about, as he literally is there in order to rebuild his value, but I could see him taking a discount and a raise from his current veteran minimum 1-year-contract. With the 2022-23 MLE expected to be around $6m, it wouldn’t be a shocker if he took the near 600% pay increase and stayed in the Bay for another year. When Wigs contract is up after next season, it’s likely he returns to GSW as well(they have his Bird rights-can go over the cap to re-sign him) but at a likely discount from his last deal. He’s made $30m+ each season with GSW, but that’s only about a $8m-$12m overpay. However, due to his career revival and having all the money he could dream of from that last contract, I’m sure GSW would LOVE Wigs on a 3yr/$45m or 4yr/$60, but it’s likely he signs for somewhere around $18m-$22m. He’s better than Kelly Oubre, Gordon Hayward, and Tim Hardaway Jr., all of whom are wings in the $17m-$30m range. GSW sorely missed a player like Wigs in the 2019 Finals, a guy who can practically walk to the basket was needed, and while he’s not Klay, he’s an above average outside shooter, something Livingston, Iggy, Jerebko, and McKinnie cannot say. He’s also an above average inside scorer and has the ability to go iso if needed, and that was a series that needed a bit of iso from anyone but Steph, who has long been GS’s best inside scorer(aside from KD of course). But it’s obviously problematic when your best inside scorer is 6’3. Honestly GSW likely wins those KD titles if they got Paul Millsap and Al Horford instead of KD that summer. They really just needed an upgrade over Barnes, as he showed he didn’t have the size nor strength to come close to scoring on or defending LeBron, and while it’s not like Millsap or Horford are Bron-stoppers, they had the size to force a few easy baskets that the warriors have lacked. Their main priority was to get a guy that can make those easy layups and dunks inside, whereas with a bunch of 6’6 guys, that can be problematic no matter how good the opposition’s bigs are. It’s the fact that they’re bigger. Millsap and Horford would’ve been a lot more helpful to have with Iggy, Draymond, and Steph once Klay, Boogie, and KD were out. Heck even if they went with Nic Batum and one of Millsap/Horford, they would’ve done just as well as they did with KD. 2016 Horford and Millsap were still solid NBA starting caliber players, and having them then would’ve been huge for the splash bros and Dray, as they’d have the best versions of the David West/Zaza Pachulia types they thrive with. Bjelicia has been so great for them because he upgrades the range of the jumper David West had and he’s as good if not a better passer than West and Zaza. However, his 6’10/245lb frame gives them another guy that can get an easy layup or easy rebound that guys like JTA, Dray, and Paschall just can’t get to. They kept bringing back Bogut for a reason, and that was his size and his passing out of the post. Bjelicia isn’t 7ft/265, but he does shoot 40% from 3, and is a great passer. It’s likely he plays out his career in Golden State.

The Warriors brought Russell on board purely with the intent of trading him. Never a secret. The injury issues they were having at the time was the only reason they kept him around as long as they did.

Wiggins put up better numbers in MN. He's just got the Golden State Bandwagon voters now. You've clearly never watched the Wolves play. D-Lo has one of the highest +/- in the league. Don't quit your day job.

The Warriors will have to build a statue outside the Chase Center for the Timberwolves. It can't be understated how appreciative, us Warriors fans are for everything the Timberwolves have done for us.
