The way you tell stories of real life experiences/uses and then tie it back to the product being reviewed really helps form a picture of value. Also, your comment about using the DAC in different budget setups and the value it brings to high end systems was also helpful.

Hey Thomas, Drew from Hawaii. I have since added the D90 MQA DAC to my system. I can agree at least in my setup it has been a game changer. My Cambridge CD/DAC combo was blown away. I have since shelved my player in favor of Tidal music with Audirvana. The player is now just a transport if I want to play a disk with the D90 doing all the conversion. 800 dollars giant killer!

Hey Thomas, great review as always. Please consider doing a comparison video of D90/M400/Ares II/etc, as they are similarly priced and makes perfect sense to compare. You know, these comparison videos get a LOT of interest (along with 'best XXX of 2020' type lol). That's also why Sean with Zero Fidelity has a dedicated section in his reviews to compare similar products. Also, please consider reviewing the RME ADI-2 DAC FS. Thanks!

A very useful review. One of the best things an audiophile can do is to try to listen to a variety of components and systems to get an idea of the different sound signatures that one can expect to find. My own experience having gone through the process of trying to squeeze the maximum performance from my DAC and system is that in terms of detail extraction it’s the micro details and tonality that gets me closest to that sense of ultimate satisfaction that I’m seeking. Without those characteristics I don’t experience the same degree of emotional enjoyment and the music becomes less involving and too clinical. But as Thomas points out it is rather incredible that we’re at the stage where we can reach such a high degree of fidelity at such a relatively low cost.

I thought of Topping D90 last year after saw it in Amazon. But after many reviewers, I turned to buy Denafrip Ares II and listened for 3 months, Satisfied. I guess Thomas likes the D90 a bit over (by his verbal expression) Ares II is the D90 gives stronger base and better over all tonal balance while the Ares II is unique for its airy transparency and textured mid. They are about the same price range, but fit different listening pleasure. Thanks Thomas.

Thank you for the review Thomas. I've had the D90 in my system for over a month and generally agree with your observations, specially the separation of instruments in the soundstage. My system's overall sound signature is warmer (tubes and ribbon speakers) and the D90 offers a perfect balance between detail and warm musicality. Love the sushi vs fried rice comparison...

What I liked about this video wasn't any thing specific to the D90, but the rationality of DAC cost vs the rest of one's listening system. I just recently purchased my first external DAC, a Topping E30. It's a budget DAC with great reviews. I expect it to perform better than any DAC in any CD/DVD player (or other source) in my price range. The rest of my system probably "deserves" or can handle a better DAC, possibly something like the D90 (or even better) to match the balanced inputs on my preamp etc. But at this point as a beginning DAC user, I'm satisfied knowing that the DAC I've decided to start with should be an improvement over what my current digital sources were feeding my preamp.

Thomas you mentioned that the Topping is maybe 85% of the $4k DAC, but that's the thing about audio math, it's not linear. The last 15% of performance could make for 200% difference in satisfaction and enjoyment. The last 5% in imaging could mean the difference between suspending disbelief or not, the last 5% in musicality could mean the difference between having to turn off the system after awhile or able to listen for hours.
@ThomasAndStereo4 жыл бұрын
Yup, I agree.In the high end world, a 2% increase is a lot. You see, I use 85% so people don't find I am exaggerating things and it is easier to understand. In my conversation with Mr Kanta, he gave it a higher number than 85% ,so that is why he is ok with the change. Also there are some sacrifices he has to live with the change, I will mention some in the upcoming Burson review.

For D90 owners: in order to get the best sound quality I recommend turning off BT entirely, and switching from PRE to DAC only mode . Changing these options is done by turning the unit off via power switch at the back, and then on again while holding the forward power button at the same time. This opens a set of options you can navigate via the two volume buttons at the front. YW :) Also, for whatever reason I prefer the filter no.2 - sounds slightly less clinical and more natural to my ears. Agreed on the point of not hearing a difference with a lower end systems. For this reason I sold my headphones which cost half the price of D90. The difference was more than obvious.

Would be nice to test Topping D90mqa vs Gustard A22, Gustard A22 has 2 akm 4499 chips, better power supply etc, i had both at home and in my system Gustard A22 is the winner, it is more open and transparent in higher register, middle and lower register is really close. I understand that many people use Topping D90 with for example focal speakers to calm down high register because they tend to have hot tweeters, but in full balanced system as mine, Gustard A22 was simple better. Only thing that Topping excelled was little faster transients but overall Gustard A22 is simple better, at list in my system and friends system also. My setup is Gustard A22 >lavricables silver interconnect > Roksan k3 integrated amp > Marohei Vortex V2 speaker cables > Falcon Acoustics RAM studio 20. Music is played via foobar (USB) configured as bit perfect (asio driver etc) and using remote controller for foobar on android mobile phone. For balansed systems Gustard A22 is winner, for overly harsh systems Topping D90 would be the winner. Also Roksan K3 integrated amp can work as preamp and as power amp, i also tried those two dacs as preamps and Roksan was working as power amp, but they simple can't match Roksan's preamp section, sound was thinner and a bit harsher what i don't like.

Hi Thomas, You do really good work trying to get the best performance out of the pieces you have been reviewing, are good at finding the right people they fit, and explaining why with your friends' systems, and expierences. I have been following your channel closely since you started it because you are one of 2 KZbin reviewers that I know take the time to AB test things with the same/consistent music in audio clips. OCD Hi-Fi guy is the second one. Yes, there are different tastes in sound and performance which makes online shopping a nightmare or guessing game. That being said, your reviewed DACs are all pretty even and you have shown how they excel in certain areas. Like you said, these are definitely good times to get the sound one is after and not break the bank within perspective, but it's certainly not easy. However, you have brought the dealer experience to people's homes. Nothing against brick and mortar. I buy most of my stuff from my dealer Albert owner of Precision Audio Video in Chicago who does AB testing in the same room with whatever you want that he has or you can carry in from your system by appointment. Like you he knows synergy, understand current value, resale potential down the road, and accommodates his customer's tastes and helps them find what they are looking for in hopefully their budget. My favorite video thus far is the Orchard BOSC video where you REALLY spent some time studying the amp and finding what works with it. I have gone back and forth listening to your videos on DACs and was able to find the sound I liked and make a decision I can enjoy for a long while based on what you discovered and put together. It stands out to me that on that video you really understood the complexity in the technical requirements of the Orchard BOSC amp and its potential with the right equipment. I think it's one of your best videos because you actually gave your viewers options for a killer system, explained why, provided the sound samples with the same song clip in that and all your past reviews, and shared which tubes you used. This along with your stories is what helps me trust your conclusions. That video and my recent prior visit to my dealer made me realize that my home theater pre amp/ processor was not helping bring my Sopras to their full potential. You gave me a dilemma between the BOSC amps or my dealer's Bel Canto 600Ms. But you sold me on the importance of a good 2 ch preamp and the magic of the Burmester 897 which I lucked out by finding and just purchased from a seller in Germany. I also ordered the Musical Paradise MPD1MK3 with the tubes you used. Last you provided another great alternative to a preamp with the option of going with a very economical, but damn good Schitt Freya with tubes you selected and have kindly shared. I was only able to really only make a decision by convientley using my resolving Shure SE846 IEM's with my Dragonfly on my S10 since KZbin is not set up for critical listening on full blown Hi-Fi rigs. I'll update you once I get everything else ordered and incorporated. Thanks for really doing good work and also for not reccomending something that is not returnable or stood by. Your video and disclosure with Orchard's BOSC return policy really cemented that you are not going to review and reccomend something that may not work out in your viewer's systems no matter how good it is. Thanks again
@ThomasAndStereo4 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks for letting me know. Yeah, I try to recommend gear that you are able to return. The MP, make sure you change to some decent 6922 tubes when you get it. The one that came with it has low gain. To be fair, I never really try the stock tube and gave it time to break in. The BOSC amp, be VERY careful how you plug it, never unplug anything when it is on. Also, another youtuber who is about to post his review of the BOSC amp told me he loves it BUT it really depends on which speaker. Some speaker it did not do too well so that is why it is very important for me that there is a return policy.

I've found the D90 can be greatly improved by using a grounding box, adding the Uptone ISO Regen ( ISO on ) and giving it some ( in my case ) cheap isolation footers. Also a good power cable is advisable. I also power the D90 from a decent copper wired two way mains block. A really significant boost in SQ was achieved with these additions.

I think a warmer-sounding DAC fits a Focal speakers. I have a Focal Chorus 716S speaker with a Rotel RA-985BX (2x100W, damping factor: 400) amplifier. I've bought a Topping D50 2 years ago. The system has become much more audible than with the previous DAC (E-mu 1212m). If I manage to buy a Focal 1038Be, then I will invest in a Topping D90.

I love reviews on DAC's. Over the last year they really have taught me what they do and what to be listening for. I have a lot of different systems and want to move the DAC around to various systems. I am on the lookout for a budget transport system for op amp revolving (Changing them out). Some cases out there need more clearance for the larger op amps (Burson Vintage/Classic) and I would like to hear if anyone knows if there is a budget DAC that can do that.

Hi Thomas - great review as always. I was wondering your thoughts about a DAC for my T+A PA3000HV integrated amp. I was using the DAC in my T+A MP3000HV, which is a Double-Differential-Quadruple-Converter with 4 D/A-converters per channel, TI/Burr-Brown 32-Bit Sigma Delta design. This DAC is slight warm and do very much enjoy the sound signature. But being about 8 years old it does lack some decoding capabilities plus not needing a reference CD player anymore - I can recoup some rack space. Are there a few DAC's that you might recommend I start auditioning?

What some of your followers will need to understand is that the chip itself whether it is an AKM or ESS Sabre has a small contribution to the ending result of how the product sounds. Implementation of a design or the circuitry around the chip itself is a major contributor to the sound. Of the circuits surrounding the DAC chip, the most significant is the power supply. Typically a less performing power supply or not technically superior results in a more warm wooly sound. Technically superior power supplies with superb low noise and high bandwidth results more often in a more transparent open and dynamic sound where the listener can actually turn down the volume and still have the same satisfaction. I auditioned the D90 for a couple weeks to discover what so many are saying is a superb DAC and it is good. However I found that the midrange warmth was severely lacking. The bass extension is there but it does not have the weight and coherency that better DACs had. Marrying the D90 with a tube front end will mask the midrange weakness. If your speakers don't have the extension then the weight and coherency will not be noticed. For the price it is a fine achievement but it is not an end game DAC as so many reviewers have said. However in looking at the design of the D90, certainly another company will come along with superior circuits shortly that will allow the AKM4499 to come out the shell. Companies like Topping etc. build DACs to a price point and the result is a balance of performance and cost using the most effective chips that are low cost. What needs to be improved is simply something that costs more. The power supplies. So what displaces the D90 in my system, an older 9028PRO with better power supplies that was 2 years into modifications. However the typical viewer will not be capable of that. The potential of the AKM4499 is there but still not fully harnessed as yet by mass market manufacturers. Wait a few more months and a smaller mfr will come out with something much better.....with a much higher price tag. Much better power supplies end up costing a significant amount. Always remember it is not the chip but the implementation that is very important.
@ThomasAndStereo4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience. I understand where you are coming from regarding the midrange warmth but I don't think it is a bad thing. The reason I say this is because I have met enough audiophiles to know that some people actually look for that. I do agree that the power supply plays an important role and the DAC chip itself is not as important as people think. Thanks Thomas Tan

Hi Thomas. Should I use a pre amp (Like the Pre90 or other) between the D90 and a Willsenton R8 amplifier? Do you think it will sound better than only connecting the D90 in DAC Mode directly to the Willsenton R8? Please advise. Congratulations and thank you for your great channel.

Hi Thomas. I have a yamaha rx-a2080, klipsch rp-280f-s. I pretty much like the sound through tidal audirvana-upnp. I purchased a gustard X16 to try it out, to me it sounded detailed and instruments well separated but pretty much 2D compared to the yamaha (this surprised me a bit), and I definitely missed the weight in mid range. What would you suggest if I want to use MQA a) don't use MQA and just stick to level 1 unfold and upnp with all of its limitations, because I won't notice anything due to yamaha's poor measurements on ADC b) m400 c) topping d90

So which streaming DAC have you listened to that impressed you the most? Topping is nice, but it is not a streamer (can not play from USB-stick at least), and adding a good source would cost some extra to it as well. Mytek Brooklin Bridge looks nice, Lumin (T2 at least), and then there is Cambridge Edge NQ - quite pricey. And then there is the whole bunch of names that I never heard before. Would you give a hint, suggestions on which directions to look at? Thanks Thomas.

It is all a question of price. I will be getting a Matrix streamer for review soon. That one however cannot use a usb stick, they do have one that can use USB stick. If the one I am getting is good enough, then perhaps I will look into the one that accept usb stick.
