Gold accumulations are generally associated with iron mineralization. Highly mineralized iron soil affects the magnetic field produced by the search coil and so we ground balance or compensate for this effect that iron has on the ability of the magnetic field to react to metal objects in the ground. Also different metal types conduct electricity differently... so silver is the highest or best conductor of electricity where as Iron or iron objects are low conductors of electricity. With gold being a relatively low conductor of electricity. But higher than Iron. So on the detector interface we have a ground phase (type of mineralization) and ground strength (amount of mineralization) paired with the place or number where the machine is balanced or the balance point. So beginning with the whites GMT (and the genius of Dave Johnson, et al) the engineers at whites developed circuitry and software that could measure the ground and auto adjust the ground balance for you and yes also with the flip of a switch we can turn the detector back to a manual ground balance mode for the older crusty detorest diehards who don't want the computer watching the ground for them. Plus we can with the GM 24K run a positive bias or negative bias off of perfect ballance if we want. The Fisher goldbug pro has a ground tracking ability and ground balance number that matches the ground measure to the ground balance set point on the screen. When the two numbers match up and you are balanced and ready to go. So all of the newer high end vlf metal detectors all work in simular copy cat fashion and are all being powered by high performance microprossers that adjust and optimize the settings for us and do their best to help us know what might be in the ground before we dig. A negative or positive ballance is used to optimize detector performance depending upon ground conditions and types of metal targets being searched for.

I have a 14" mono and a 14" DD for my mint condition closet queen Whites GMT (Dave Johnson) E Series. They need to be run on the swingy thingy and control arm because they are so heavy. and unfortunatly... they don't plug into the new 24K. The stock coil on the GMT beeps on 1/2000 of an ounce piece of gold in the air.

My imaginary wife told me if I buy one more metal detector she was gona leave me... So I abruptly ordered a new MX SPORT! My real girlfriend from New York City informed me she was getting a new Minelab 5 thou... So they are out their... the ones that let us have as many metal detectors as we want! I told her I was a Whites dealer, and could get her a really good deal on a new metal detector, but she wasn't interested!

Using DD coils for nugget hunting? I wouldn't with Whites units. Use mono coils for more depth. The Whites can handle the ground mineralization.

I think that you may mean to use a Concentric coils,,, You can't use Mono coils on VLF's, only on PI machines
