This is a video of my friend and I coming in to land a Navy C-2A Greyhound on the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier a few years back. As the co-pilot in this video, my role was to back up the pilot throughout the entire approach and make sure we didn’t do anything that could kill us.
Typically for a ‘carrier break’ in an E-2 or C-2, you turn about one mile past the ship to fly a racetrack landing pattern before rolling into short final. For this pass though, we had distinguished visitors onboard so we had to perform a “DV Straight-In.” Although it’s not as exciting as a typical carrier break, this is still a great video to grasp a sense of what it takes to land a cargo plane on a moving runway in the middle of the ocean. It’s been a few years since this video was recorded, but I miss flying on and off of aircraft carriers every day.
The C-2 is the Navy's premier logistics and transport aircraft and is arguably one of the hardest planes to land on the boat. Naval Aviation has been synonymous with aircraft landing at sea for over 100 years.

Great video. Thanks. I never landed on a CV, but did take off. A "Deck Launch" off the Independence (CV-62) about 1978 on a C1. I was a civilian tech. heading home. Had mail bags tossed in all around me, oil leaking from the port engine, and they run the plane to the stern of the ship, turn around, with the tail hanging over the aft end of the flight deck, floor it! I'm scared shitless. What! No catapult? What? We were airborne halfway down the deck, and on our way to Jacksonville. When the flight engineer stuck his head back, I pointed out the oil trail down the engine nacelle, and he said "Don't worry, it does that all the time". Man, that was FUN!!!!!

My dad flew S-3’s for the duration of its career, and it too had a great sound. “The Hoover” or “Whistling Shit-Can” as the called it. The “war whoop of the TF-34” can still be heard coming from the A-10. Love how the ground shakes when the COD & E-2 are flying over in the break though!! Salute to our Naval Aviators, and bless them for turning JP into such beautiful noise! Great Videos Mr. Roy!

If done right it is a very Zen thing. You can see the yoke moving. Watch his left thumb as he trims the rudder (upper left-bottom right direction) and pitch (upper right-bottom left). Note he trims rudder more than pitch. Trimming the whole way through the approach. The C2 and E2 are like horses that know the barn is behind them. Got to keep the nose pointing forward. I wish the camera caught the feet and the throttle movements. The proverbial duck paddling under the water. @@MattTee1975

Warms my heart that there are many, many young men such as yourself still understanding what service to your country means, rising to a challenge to be part of an elite carrier qualed pilot force etc. I too had dreams of Naval Aviation or Army Helicopter flying but alas, my color blindness knocked me out of those. I achieved my PPL my senior year in High School so that flying satiated me for 45+ years. I ended up on the enlisted side of the Navy riding the USS Henderson DD 785 in the Tonkin Gulf '71 & '72. I really , REALLY enjoyed our "plane guarding" of the USS Enterprise, the USS Constellation and a few others. When the Paris Peace Accords were signed in January 1973 many of our "Cans" were sent home along with many carriers. In those days the primary attack aircraft was the F4 Phantom. When a carrier got a "go-home" order the air show the F4 Drivers put on overhead the carrier and us riding the tin-cans was phenomenal. Simply amazing displays of airmanship and celebration. Memories I will never, ever forget..... Again, thank you sir!

I just watched a documentary of actual footage on the Memphis Bell and the bombing runs they did. They had interviewed some of the crew members who were in their 90s. My Dad and several uncles were in WW II. Wow, just wow. Stay safe and thank you for your service. ❤

In 98 I got to fly from NAS Sigonella out to the Enterprise in the back of a COD. On one of the workups before our cruise, I got to do a couple CAT shots and traps in the back seat of a F/A-18D. Our squadron, VMFA-312, had done an NCO of the year board and the winner got to do some CQ with our skipper. They brought out a D model Hornet from one of the other squadrons at MCAS Beaufort. The guy who won the board was scared to death of flying and turned down the opportunity. I was the runner-up so I got to go in his place. Absolutely amazing.

Excellent set of videos. Never saw any plane guard destroyers in the 3 or 4 I watched. DDG15 escorted Ranger, Kitty Hawk, and Constellation and that was our tasking most of the time, especially in the Indian Ocean. 1980 to 83. I find it hard to believe that's not done anymore.....unless COD doesn't need it!

First of, thank you for your Service, sir! I too am a Veteran. Army. What an incredible feeling it must be taking off the deck of a Navy aircraft carrier! Once in my life I was catching a HOP flight out of Peterson Field in Colorado, now Peterson Space Base, eventually landing at Mcguire AFB in New Jersey. I was headed back to Germany 🇩🇪 where I was a U.S. Army Tank commander serving in 1-1 Cavalry, 1st Regiment of Dragoons. I was the only person dressed in my Class A uniform. An Airman grabbed my bag, put it on a small trailer hooked up to an airfield tractor and off she went. I was looking out over the runway/taxi way spotting only a single plane, which I thought was odd being that itsxan Air Force base. That one plane was a Leer jet!!! Immediately excited I turned towards the ticketing desk and said' "Am I flying on THAT?!!" "Yes, sir"...yeehaw!! It cost me $10 as service members must purchase a bag lunch at the ticket counter, sounds silly but that's how the Military HOP s.o.p. works. So I climb aboard this hotrod, strapped in the very first seat and asked the pilot, an Air Force Major and a Captain as copilot, "Am I in for a treat?" The pilot said '"The take-off and landings will be the best part." They told me they'd leave the curtain separating the cockpit from the passenger's open for now but would have to close them as we flew across the USA picking up more passengers. "More passengers!?" We had 4 more landings and take-offs before finally reaching Mcguire AFB. All I could say was, "Sweet!!" We line up on the airstrip, throttled up and when he released the brakes, at least I think that's what he did, this thing threw me back into my seat and the strips of painted white lane markers turned into one solid line!! Man, that thing was hummin'!! I've never experienced the cockpit view in a plane while taking off so this was adrenaline pumping stuff!! Seconds later we literally shot straight up at a slight right hand bank until we reached our cruising altitude when the pilot dropped the nose and the ride to Chicago started. Once Chicago was visible they flew around the city and it was mind blowing! What a view! It felt like being in Batman's jet flying around Gotham at night! Waiting in the terminal a few more servicemen and women were seated around me. I'd ask a couple of them what flight they were on and boy were they surprised when I broke the news to them that they weren't getting on a cold, noisy and bumpy old cargo plane but that we were flying on a Leer jet! This one Navy guy told me I was full of 💩 💩 poop until I told him to watch which plane his luggage was being stuffed into lol. Actually as we were preparing to take off, curtains closed this time, darn it, that same guy told me he was petrified...lmao Anyways, that was a fantastic day that turned out to be for me. Normally I'd feel crappy knowing my leave was up and the next time I woke up it would be to an alarm then strapping on my New Balance running shoes, suiting up for PT and a 5 mile run at 5 am!! But not this time! We made 5 stops and 4 take-offs that day. A day I'll never forget!

Remember flying onto the Roosevelt when they were off the coast of Cuba, flew into Gitmo then hopped onboard a C-2, got lucky and had the bubble seat and had a good view coming in, all you could see was the blue water below, started getting closer to the waves then boom, on the deck, nothing like trapping onboard, pushed back into the seat cause you are facing the rear....the memories.....

Always miss a shit hot break! I was a Flight Engineer on C-130s and the Great White Whisper Jet (E-6). Did the break into Adak one time with the base Skipper in the left seat and a Marine pilot in the right. I really talked up the break, so the Marine Pilot briefed it up and executed it. The skipper GLOCed so I got the flaps. Lol, we were banned from doing breaks the next day. 😂 By the way, 2 cruises before becoming a FE. Connie and Kitty. COD arrival was always the best. They brought the mail!!

Thanks again Rob! Question!!! What's the layout of the catch wires people refer to? Is #3 the last one before go around. Or is # 1 the last wire?? Also how often are the cables replaced?? I saw the video of the guy jumping and just missing getting both legs taken off at the knee's when that cable snapped.. Wow!! That thing is like a Samurai Sword flying out of control at anything, and anyone in it's path.. He did it so care free!! Like he was expecting it. It's amazing the organization they follow on deck.. Im quite sure when your arrival is announced over the horn. That it puts a smile on everyone's faces. There's nothing more satisfying to the heart when you're seperated from loved ones, than to receive something from them. Your job and your aircraft are probably the most valuable asset of the military. You keep everyone's worries about home under control and allow them to stay focused while protecting our country. So cool👍. I wanted to to do this when I was a kid but was crushed to discover my eyesight wasn’t perfect without correction...dream killer. I still became a pilot though, I’m a commercial tow boat pilot😂👍. While not as exciting as landing on a carrier, it has its moments (making certain bridges southbound in high water or threading the tow into a lock) when we are locked into total concentration. I definitely dig your videos and comments👍

Wow! That was something. Even though it's a bigger aircraft, it seems to give you more time because it's not a jet and the landing speed appears to be slower. I can imagine how much easier it would be to land a WWII plane on a carrier that size...excluding the F4U Corsairs. Those would be a pain and a hazard to land on any aircraft carrier.

@@robertclymer6948 yes sir I am a student pilot, I turned 16 a couple months ago and now I'm working and saving up cash for my flight hours this summer, plan is to check ride on my birthday. I'm not colorblind, and yes the goal is fighters but I'd fly whatever, it would be a dream come true. During the pandemic I had some trouble with good grades but I take mostly college and honors classes at the moment. Thanks for the kind words!

Man that trim switch is getting a real workout lol. Obviously the ship was pointing into the wind, but what's a normal ramp speed for the C-2? Once you guys turned final it looks like your ground speed was way slow. Cool video though! And rare to see Superhornets AND a charlie on the carrier deck.

Jaw dropping! Who said men can't multitask?! I have a question: how does the landing gear avoid the 3 wires when landing? Are the wires close enough together and the plane always lands in front of the last wire? It must be a very acute angle to do this and still get the hook engaged!

Are you within visual of the guy in front of you? I never saw the plane-guard destroyer, but do you ever see any of the screen on a sunny day? Does the Osprey have comparable volume? Is the Viking really worthless as a platform? Keep the videos coming, they are helpful.

Flying the COD and any assholes in the back are trusting you know what the fuck you’re doing. I was enlisted Marine, went to Annapolis, never crossed my simple mind to fly a friggin aircraft even though I liked being passenger. You guys are something else man. I’m old enough now some of my classmates have commanded carriers. I knew them when you wouldn’t trust them with your car.
