I've had my '02 Limited 4x4 for four years now. It has 340k on it. Most confidence inspiring and reliable vehicle I've owned. Repairs: Rear door stuff, valve cover gaskets, exhaust manifolds, steering hoses, alternator, struts, dashboard lights. Not worrying about engines blowing up, transmission puking, computers breaking, or parts falling off: Well worth the "Toyota Tax".

I bought a 2004 Sequoia Limited a few years ago. I searched and searched for one in good condition with low mileage. I picked one up for $13k with 110,000. It had an amazing Car Fax report. It had been garaged and all the maintenance done religiously. Only other thing I really wanted was a green one. thought the odds are I won't find that specific color but again I got lucky and found a green one with absolutely no dints, window chips and no repairs of body damage. I've had Ford pickups, GMC pickups, Nissan Titan etc and I can say that this Sequoia is the best vehicle I've ever owned. Even though it was 17yo when I bought it. The only thing I have done was to get a new set of tires.....it had good tires on it but they were 11 years old so I figured they wouldn't hold up. AND.....I had to replace the rear hatch that you spoke about. Don't be intimidated to do it yourself. Several good video's to show how to do it and it really wasn't that difficult and I got a metal latch and it works great. Thanks for your video.

They are interference engines but if you lose the timing belt at low RPMs chances are you will have no bent valves. I'm an automotive tech and I've replaced over the years between 10 and 15 timing belts on first gen sequoias. Out of all of them 3 had bent valves. Also a nice little trick the back latch is notorious for breaking you can take and run the cable out of the lower left hand tag hole and use it as a manual release. Works great and no more replacing the latch.

@sonydominates
@sonydominates 2 ай бұрын
@tealmountaintrekking6141 With that many miles, it's probably best to replace them. Mine were replaced around 300k miles, but I see a lot of people recommending to replace them every 100k miles. I guess every 200k could be okay if you mostly have highway miles, but if you have modified suspension and put a lot of load up front, probably every 100-150k. It's not too hard to do and shouldn't be too expensive to get parts for. Not to mention, it's kind of a safety maintenance item at this point.

So something to note on the rear hatch. Alot of latch HANDLES break and people go through a ton of them not realizing that the handle is not the problem. The latch/lock mechanism on the bottom of the hatch that latches door down gets dirty/corroded and very stiff. As a result the handles or the cable starts wearing out because they can’t handle the increased resistance. I just replaced mine as it was too far gone but keeping them lubricated is critical.

At the moment, I have more than a dozen cars. One of them is a Gen 1 Sequoia (wife's daily). Several are 6 figure vehicles. She wants a new SUV, and I'll let her get whatever....but we will NOT be getting rid of the Sequoia. It's the most bullet-proof car I've ever owned, and we will own it until either it or we have died. If they made new Gen 1's, we'd buy another.

Getting harder to find them under $5k unless they are a bit beaten up. If mechanically sound they are worth fixing up for sure. I have an 2004 Limited 2WD I bought prepandemic for $3100 after haggling the price down from $3750. I don't think I could do that now.

There’s a lot on Facebook here in Utah, but they’re definitely going up as people realize what a gem they are. I agree they are definitely worth fixing up. I found one with a bad transmission for 1,200 and was super tempted to get it and slap a transmission in it, but I really don’t need or have room for another one haha. How many miles do you have on yours?

So glad I just stumbled upon this video. I know its old but gonna throw my comment out there anyway lol. quick story, I was looking to sell or possible trade my car and have someone offering to trade me their '03 sequoia 4x4 straight up for my crown vic. The sequoia has 225k on it, which I thought is crazy lol but it runs and drives soooo smooth and is in really good looking condition, clean. however I know absolutely nothing about toyota's, never have owned one. I've always been a ford guy, and my crown vic is simple to work on and reliable as heck. Only thing right off he mentioned is that the CEL is on for a YAW sensor, is that a deal breaker? Is this possibly a good trade considering mileage difference and value? I do like my ford crown vic it's amazing with only 125k miles BUT I've been wanting to sell it and get a jeep or something to overland with anyways and I've never really seen one of these sequoia's before now. Cash value I guess would be $2500 as that's what I paid for my car to trade. Sorry about the long post and thanks in advance for the reply.

Unfortunately with the height of my box plus the 4” mattress pad you can’t sit fully. If you build your box like 8-9” high and get a 2 or 3” mattress pad you should be good. If you check out my video on car camping upgrades I’m going to have it set up to where I’d you want to lounge you can tilt the front storage top to like 45 degrees and lock it in place. Hope this answers your questions. Thanks for watching! Make sure and subscribe to the channel for more helpful videos! Cheers

TO WASATCH, very good video. I like how you pointed to the things you like and changes. Good emphasis on how you had owned other SUVs, Jeeps, etc. before. Your rig looks great! I would appreciate if in future videos you mention the typical cost for the mods or gear and if something is DIY by average owner or might be best done by a mechanic or skilled DIY. I liked your video so much that I subscribed, so I hope to see and learn more from you in the future. Happy trails!

How much is it to do a timing belt job. And how much for a new starter on this vehicle?
@wasatchmotoco
@wasatchmotoco 2 жыл бұрын
I did the timing belt myself. The parts were about 300. I got Aisin which is basically oem replacement. I’d venture to say to have a shop do it you’d be looking at around 7-800 for that job. The starter is under the intake manifold which is kind of a dumb design but I’d say probably 3-400 for the starter. That’s definitely not a common issue. It’s pretty rare that they go bad. Mine is at 305k original starter.
