hi becca! my dad was cleaning out the house, and he gave me this book since he knew i liked plants. a while later, i was showing him some of my plants that matched the pictures, and he told me that my grandpa actually bought the book. i’m the youngest of 3 (and we all are 5-6 years apart in age), so i don’t have any memory or recollection of my grandpa (i never really met any of my grandparents from either side). probably only a few pictures when i was a baby. so when he told me it was my grandpa’s, taking care of my plants became that more special. i really enjoyed going through the book along with the video! thank you for this ❣️

Back in 1978 my apartment had a living room/ dining room combo which I separated with a living wall. It was amazing from both sides. Houseplants really became the "in" thing during the Victorian times (late 1800s in the US). Everything that's old is new again...

Thanks Becca, that was fun hanging out 😊 I was looking for another great plant book with a wide variety of info., pressed pause, and jumped right onto Ebay to find the same one. Just ordered it; can't wait to check it out, it seems like a really good book with helpful information, I'm also trying to learn more about orchids too. Thank you for another great video 💕🌱 Congrats on your book 🤗

My mom had this book, and I've also found a copy. It was a very popular edition, and can often be found at thrift shops. It's a really good reference, but there are some care tips that I don't agree with (depending on the plant).

Yay! I love old plant books. I recently made my first plant YT video on Ludisia Discolor and looked at some old books from the 1800s. With these old books we get glimpses into people from another time. Planter boxes in the home were popular during the 1970s (think Brady Bunch), but they were often put in the interior too far from windows. My dream home would be more Earth Ship style with a greenhouse room on the south-side 😊

Hi Becca, great topic !!! My Mom had plants in the 70's where my interest started. I wanted to chime in and say that the other plant that has plantlets is known as a "Piggy-back plant". The Piggyback plant was cool because they put out new leaves right out of each leaf. Crazy. You could propagate these by pinning down the leaf on top of rich soil; I think Begonias can also be started this way. I have seen a few in the last year, so they just aren't known in this generation as they were prior. I have a few of the older plant books as well. In the 70's, Mom and I shopped in plant stores galore, they were very popular then. I love houseplants and I am new to your channel. Thank you, I like what your style. Jan Thomson
@gudrunorca4 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right, Jan. At 14:59 Becca says she's not sure what that is, but she's pointing at the Piggyback plant (Tolmiea menziesii). My mom has it and we have successfully propagated it as you described. The Rex begonias can be propagated by leaf cuttings, whereas cane/angel wing begonias can be propagated by stem cuttings (I have found them to root very easily in water and transfer with little adjustment). We just got a rex begonia and I'm hoping to try the leaf propagation method with it.

Don’t worry about splitting up the video, nothing wrong with filming the next day or several days! The continuity is definitely still there =) Maybe it would be annoying if it was like 30 seconds per day, but I can’t imagine having a problem with a 20 min video split up into several days. I like this series, the photos and botanical illustrations are so cool in these old books and I am surprised how many plant choices and advice is still the same today.
