Faith's Focus (Jesus)

Scripture Reading:
Hebrews 11:39-12:2 (King James Version)
39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: 40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

This Hebrews series keep getting richer, surely in keeping with rhe intent of the author of that book. Rev Inks continually brings each message back into the context of the first chapter, and how The New Testament is a fulfillment of the OT and its prophecies. And then he traces out the local context, in this case starting in Chapter 10 with “therefore…”. This is a tour de force of faith-fleshing out that very word to unclutter it of our own modern and shallow understanding. He then opens up the cultural context of an athletic race, which would have been very familiar to the that Greco-Roman culture. Finally he helps us see the context of the Christian life of not seeing the end point in this world but in Christ, in heaven. I very much appreciated the better translation of the “for” in the phrase, “…for the joy that was set before him endured the cross.” And I was very much helped by seeing the “spectators” that are t cloud of witnesses as the Old Testament saints who endured in faith and now cheer us on in our race. What an encouragement! What a savior! Let us run this race, Brothers, with our eyes on what Christ has done.
