ISO shorting the 27R resistor you can install a NTC. this protects the valve from flashing during cold powerup and still offers low resistance for max filament heat. This trick was done in valve based TV-sets.

@@thomasgauntt Thanks, I was wondering what "Kosmo" format was! So, almost an inch shorter than 5U and a little over an inch taller than 4U (Serge and Buchla), and a little over 2.5" taller than eurorack of course. While doing your own one-off format is fun and even cool, I can't imagine any advantages of not sticking with long established formats for panel sizes? Why would anyone besides Sam want to use this format?

Directly soldering the valves makes micro-cracks in the glass surrounding the pins from thermal expansion and as a result the valve can slowly lose the vacuum and fail early.

The pins on a 9-pin valve are actually made of a special metal alloy, that has about the same expansion/contraction coefficient that glass has, this is so that there's a good metal-to-glass seal around the pin so that no air can leak into the valve, this means that there's very little likelihood of micro-cracks occurring in the glass, consider this....when a valve is operating normally both the internal metal electrodes, heater-filament, and the glass envelope gets hot anyway, whether the valve is soldered onto a circuit-board, or mounted in a socket.
