Cut em a little slack. This place wasn't originally intended to be a fort or a castle- it became one out of necessity. They had to construct this while already surrounded by enemies, and the bulk of the outer walls was probably made over only a week or two. I think it's implied that Hyrule Castle was cleared of monsters between BotW and the Upheaval, so they may have thought they didn't need to defend as much from that angle.

Some of the design choices actually make it HARDER and less intuitive to build, like planks instead of logs for the walls, and moving all the dirt from the moat off to wherever they got rid of it, and having four gates instead of one It is objectively easier to not do those things, they are deliberately making the whole building process more difficult for less gain But its a video game so idk its not that big of a deal 🤷♂️

To be fair to Lookout Landing, I got the impression at the start of the game that it basically didn't exist when Link and Zelda went to the Castle. I thought it was just the staging ground for Zelda, Purah and the researchers, and was turned into a fort and central command post after the Upheaval to *"Look Out"* for the missing Link and Zelda. It must have been constructed in a hurry with whatever materials they had on hand, which was likely mostly stuff from the Hudson Reconstruction caches, which would explain the heavy use of planks and wooden beams.

@TimesChu Жыл бұрын
I can actually explain the plank thing: Lookout Landing is built right on the remains of Castle Town. In BotW, the area around Hyrule Castle is littered with the remains of buildings, but in TotK most of them are gone. It's highly likely all the good wood left in the area was scrapped to build Lookout Landing in a hurry, rather than spending time hauling in and sinking 200 logs. I just figured Lookout Landing wasn't originally designed as a fort but as a research station, and they hastily had to throw together fortifications from what they had available when monster started cropping up again. Also, they probably don't expect the monsters to lay proper siege, they probably just expect small-to-medium groups of monsters in waves, not an army of 2,000 using actual tactics and strategy.
@homerman76 Жыл бұрын
Which is a fair expectation with how the monsters normally behave, if the monsters moved in mass no amount of temporary defense measure would be able to help. He wanted to seize control with minimal resistance and, possible, casualties to the people. You can't rule a land without a population after all. Every single situation in the four other races of hyrule is ganon acting to weaken them. Forced the gerudo into a siege situation and held them down. Poisoned the zora till they could barely move. Inhibited and distracted the Rito with that blizzard. And most deviously was drugging the gorons and likely had plans of turning them into an army.
@wildmonkeycar Жыл бұрын
Another reason Lookout Landing was built where it was is because of the safe house beneath it. It was originally a safe house for the Royal Family, and was hidden underneath the fountain that used to be there (visible in BotW). The escape tunnel was originally meant to be used going from Hyrule Castle to the safe house as a means of escape, in case of a siege. Lookout Landing was built around and on top of the safe house, and the tunnels were sealed off, both from the passage of time and for defensive reasons

As explained in another comment, Lookout Landing doesn’t stand a chance. Aerocudas can easily soar above, can carry monsters and drop them to breach the fort, or drop bomb barrels and raze the compound to the ground. This is shown in several instances in the game like in the Turin quest and in some parts of the depths. Next, Moblins can throw Bokoblins or rocks or whatever over the walls. Horriblins can go through the Royal Passage and into the emergency shelter if they have the knowledge. Any well commanded monster force (especially with silver enemies who have 700+ health) can certainly breach Lookout Landing. Even with a large Hyrulean combined-arms force, their weapons are not the best, either decayed or low damage and durability. Silver Moblins and Horriblins and Bokoblins will easily tank and do major damage. Hyrule’s only hope is if Link comes to the rescue, and with his swordsmanship and skill he will be able to fight off the attacking forces. But if link isn’t there, Lookout Landing is going to be destroyed.

This immediately made me think of a version of Link where Zelda lent him the Triforce of Wisdom. Immediately walking around Hyrule-doing quests, being brave-but also questioning every defense strategy out there 😂❤
@JoshuaEisenbart Жыл бұрын
Lookout Landing was probably built in two different phases and mindsets: the first was before the Upheaval, and the second was after. We know that Zelda herself commissioned Hudson Construction to build Lookout Landing, and that the Skyview Towers were designed to work with the Purah Pad, so it must've been started before the Upheaval. However, since the mini-stable and general shop are not finished until after Link makes his way back there, it is safe to say much of it was finished while Link was still on the Great Sky Island. In particular, I believe that the gates, Purah's house, and the Skyview Tower were all built, or at least started, before the Upheaval. This is evidenced by the handrails/minimal crenelations, the sheer importance of those aspects, and, most subtly, the much higher build quality: the boards are much closer together, and the ramparts have a neater edge. This also explains why so many of the flaws in Lookout Landings defenses are at these points: they were built with the mindset of a base of operations(or BoO) for rebuilding and research, not defense. The second phase saw the construction of the walls, and began after the Upheaval. This is evidenced by the larger crenelations and slopier fit of the boards. This also explains why boards were used instead of logs: they were originally cut because Hudson Construction intended to build a BoO, not a fort, and had to be repurposed. Also, something to note about its placement, and the tunnels: the stone bunker was there long before the fort was. Lookout Landing was specifically built around the ruins of the ancient knighting grounds of Hyrule, and the game mentions several times that the tunnel was in fact an emergency escape route FROM Hyrule Castle TO the Emergency Shelter, while implying that it is 100's, if not 1,000's, of years old. That is why it is in such bad shape. However, it is not as if they aren't trying to make up for all these flaws. The northern gate is both the narrowest one, and the only one that stays closed, while Purah herself maintains a constant watch of Hyrule Castle. Also, the placement of the spikes on the north side are particularly clever. The north side of Lookout Landing has the most trees, and placing spikes between them, as they did, will certainly slow down any would-be attackers, simply by creating a enough obstacles. Yes, the monsters at Fort Hateno certainly did install more spikes, but those are extremely flimsy, and can be broken with a single swing of a 2-handed weapon, requiring constant replacement. The spikes around Lookout Landing can't be broken in-game, though the laws of reality mean they aren't invincible.
@Sheylenna Жыл бұрын
I think one of the reasons Lookout Landing is built so strangely is because it was built as a residence first... then they added the tower. When the miasma started, they probably started fortifying it and used the planks they were using to build more buildings to build the wall. Also, the area they built in was already a lake with 4 entrances they had to bring in soil to make the landing as it is in TotK since it's the sacred ground ruins the lake was much larger in BotW.

To be fair, I don't think that the place was really designed as a fort at all. To be fair, one thing you need to consider is that the monsters aren’t very smart. Most of them use clubs or broken swords, and the ones that do use bows are relatively weak, so just being above them will generally keep you safe. On top of that, they don’t attack in formation (except for the bokoblin battalions, however those guys seem to control their territory, and don’t care much for expanding it), so it’s unlikely for them to properly counter any half decent strategy. And finally, there are no significantly large groups of monsters. At all times there are at least 15-20 fighters in or around Lookout Landing at all times, and most monster groups max out at 8 members, so they’re never going to outnumber Lookout Landing’s troops

@TheBreadPirate my one suggestion is about the merlons and crenellations. I don't think it's fair to critique the height seeing as how historically, some castles did have merlons at a similar height to Lookout Landing. They were between 3 and 7 feet because it's not terribly important in a siege scenario to be able to stand to your full height. Crouching while shooting out between the crenellations would be common anyway to reduce your available area to be shot by enemy archers, so having the merlons only 3 feet isn't a huge deal. There are a number of flaws with this criticism of lookout landing, so im gonna put them in a nice lil list. for myself, others, and whatever 1: it had only been about 2 weeks since link was gone and the upheaval started. Making a base like that in two weeks is honestly impressive 2: the underground path, and the tower, were both there before the fortifications. The underground path was an escape from hyrule castle, which means the fact it leads inwards is a moot point. We are at its end 2.5: that "entrance" into the cave system is probably not intended. Based on its unshapeliness, and my memory of what robbie's wife said, i believe that hole was actually broken by her. So it actually would have been a sealed off room to hide in, and not a place of escape (unless a sole necessary) 3: the lookout tower and purah's research station are likely built first, before the walls, and wouldve been built better fortifications later. It would be hard to build around them, due to their large size 4: monsters dont roam in massive packs, and we dont see them lay siege. The worst that could be sent to lookout landing would be a lynel, or a battle talus. Thankfully, none are around, but the moat is enough to keep them away, or at least their most dangerous attacks. The smaller fortification is good enough for roaming packs of bokoblins, which would be their main enemy to keep out. 5: a bit of a misnomer, but technically, those walls are extremely sturdy. Launch a bomb, a boulder, a boulder bomb, and none of those attacks even scratch the walls. Its some good lumbar

One of the more baffling things about this "thing" is much better defensive positions exist in Hyrule. such as: Both Tarrytown and Rito village which are built on a massive rock pillar with only one accessible bridge. Kakariko village and Zora's domain which are protected by narrow passageways through the mountains which would be easy to fortify against large numbers of foes. Gerduo town which is defended by massive walls and controls the water source in a big desert which can damage enemies via attrition. Goron city which has the natural defences of being in a volcano thereby cooking anything that's not a Goron. Hyrule Castle itself had fantastic natural defences being built into a rocky eminence and having a massive natural moat with strong currents. But, it's not a very liveable place these days... However, my number one choice for a new capital of hyrule would be a massive citadel of a Akala, are you have a massive fortress in a fantastic strategic location that is already built and has CANNONS! Artillery fire from a strong elevated position combined with all with excellent natural defences and an already built massive fortress would make this an extremely strong position, and it has good access to the population centres of Terry town goron city and Zora's domain.

To be fair despite the fantasy themeing they are more advanced then your typical Middle European setting, they have fully functional motors and wheels they use to make cars (even if those cars are absurdly easy to pull apart and put back together using magic super glue) and they aren't building a wall to keep put people they're building a wall to keep out monsters and the smartest monsters (as far as I'm aware) are bokoblins and moblins who seem to be somewhere between monkey and human making (or possibly stealing) primitive fortifications and having guards to alert the rest of their pack if they spot link aswell as using tools and weapons but notably most of their weapons are Melle except for their crudly made bows and sometimes they throw rocks, most people won't die to a rock being thrown at their ankles and therfore the biggest threat is a bokoblin with a decent aim and even that can be solved by a wooden sheild

Really like this concept, you should do this for more places in this game

You’re a madman. This video is way better researches than it has any right to be. Great content! I like shorter videos in general, but still sunk fully into this one. I also love that you’re already making videos but haven’t finished the game yet. I’m also a slow gamer (with a one year old) so it makes me feel like less of a “slacker.”

Thanks for the compliments Mike! And don't worry about finishing the game quickly. Savor it.

13:00 This type of defense is just commonly found in videogames with castle defenses Idk where it originates, but it's probably those archer stakes after decades of videogame evolution

I would also like to point out the usage of the skyview tower as an escape route (now I have no idea how useful being launched into the sky might be in warfare) but assuming that each person has a paraglider, evacuation would be decently simple.

To be fair on the giant Cheval de Frise, a bunch of the monsters might simply be big enough to render normal sized ones ineffective. The bokoblins would have regular ones because Hylians scale with regular humans. That still doesn't explain why they're so haphazardly placed, but it might explain why they're so big.

I love this video so much! Maybe you should do videos reviewing the defenses of other major settlements around hyrule, such as rito village, hateno village, Zora’s domain, Gerudo town, and more!
