AZ microbursts more common than tornadoes...burst of strong winds on surface less than 2.5 miles wide. If burst of wind is larger than 2.5 miles wide, then a macroburst. Microbursts wind speeds up to 100 mph, sometimes even higher. 100 mph is equal to an EF1 tornado. One reason is dry air in place in the mid-levels of the atmosphere with humid air fuel microbursts that suddenly burst down from a storm above. Wide area of microbursts reported across your state this past week in July there and also last Oct.
