IMO Korg have shot themselves in the pad by not releasing this 18 months ago. By now the world has progressed (pandemic or not), and I think your Pro's and Con's were spot on. Things like 32MB samples or non-controllable single multi-engine at a time are not enticing propositions. I was waiting for this device - minilogue XD meet Electribe R machine - but now when it's finally here - I dunno. I think this more like Volca Beats/Keys/NTS-in-one rather than Electribe RXD I was imagining. And aesthetically (I know it's only my personal opinion), it reminds of some basic furniture I made back in the 90's when because I had low quality timber i painted it black - that's what those sides look like to me 😄

What I’m always asking for in a synth is: What is the ONE thing the machine does really well, or better than the others? Be it sound quality, build, workflow, interface, flexibility, price or whatever. This one doesn’t seem to do anything really well.
@jm67342 жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely right. These days with such high quality software for a fraction of the price, hardware needs to bring something special. So where does this fit in I wonder
@straighttalk20692 жыл бұрын
@@jm6734 Software depends on a lot of external factors that people often omit (that increases the cost) like you need a decent computer and audio and midi interface. Software can be effected by things like computer viruses, operating system updates. Software can become useless, if not updated (or as has happened to me twice) software companies can be bought out by other companies, who then stop development on your already purchased app, thus ending it's life. Drumlogue is a better than average hybrid drum-machine, that isn't trying to be anything else. DSI Tempest was four times the price and not half as good in my opinion.

Like several other people have said, I came here pretty excited to see what this could do but ended up not that impressed. The TR8S is great and I still go back to your in depth look at that one to remind myself of everything it can do (I just wish it had a song mode). Yeah yeah yeah it's not real analog but it sounds great. So far I'm not really liking the sound of the analog parts on the Drumlogue. It kind of sounds dull to me like the OG Drumbrute. No real oomph or character like a real 808, Vermona DRM, or even the Drumbrute Impact. I love making kits on the TR8S made up of various classic TR sounds mixed with samples and fm drums. Everything sounds great in that thing. I'm not a fan of Roland's fake analog synthesizers but they nailed it with the TR8S. Those tiny Korg controls are also a big turnoff.
@NunyaB1s2 жыл бұрын
Have you used an OG drum brute in person ? I found that YT vids did NOT do OG justice and just like a classic 808/909 you need to plug kicks and snares into a compressor to make it shine. I’ve found that my favorite kick actually mixes both of its kicks together and it thunders! Add some bit crushing…
@VincentPresley2 жыл бұрын
@@NunyaB1s Yeah, I have both the Drum Brutes. Love the Impact and used it on a couple albums. I found the OG sound really dull but it's different enough to keep and they sell used for only $200 so it's not even worth selling. I now like it for what it is. It doesn't punch but for only $200 it's pretty great.

I don't know, it feels a bit lackluster at the moment but we'll have to see what comes out in the future for the user engine. Like Korg have already done their homework with the Volca series so they know what features appeal to users. It would have been nice to see the MS-20 filter, Waveguide resonator or even the vacuum tube from the Nubass built in. Also would have been nice to have some kind of dedicated control element, that multiple parameters could be mapped to, for dj style build ups. Like the ribbon control from the emx/esx grooveboxes, having something like this that you could map multiple controls to would have been a nice addition to functionality. In this day and age nobody wants to use up a seperate pattern to create a fill pattern, it's just messy. Other grooveboxes have better ways of doing this, where the alternative pattern is contained in the original pattern.

I personally hate sound design on the tr8s using just one encoder! So with the 4 on the Drumlogue, I have a feeling it might be a techno monster. @@jm6734 707 screen is pretty good, and the workflow for punching in patterns per clip is clearly Electribe2-inspired, which is a plus Drumlogue is not a groovebox. It is a drum machine. Compare to TR6S, Drumbrutes, TR8S, Behringer 808 & 909 clones, etc. But the Drumlogue has a sound of its own, too, the others can be written off as "generic" because they are wholly unoriginal in sound.

Great Tutorial!! Thanks!!! >>>> I couldn't find a single video on KZbin showing how to use the DL with a DAW, which is a shame. Would love to see that. Unfortunately none of the MIDI ROUTING channels seem to record the full pattern from the DL to a DAW, which is extremely disappointing. Also the memory of the DL is extremely small, so importing our own samples is almost a joke. There is also no option to export and save your patterns out of the Drumlogue, like for ex. the Drumbrute has. With such small memory, the user is forced to erase partners constantly to free space, not allowing the user to store their previous works or be able to recall them after. This option should exist to compensate for the lack of memory.

It's interesting to see how manufacturers chase each other around. For a while, the rage was pure analog, then digital, and now we are in this hybrid time when everything coming out has analog and digital engines combined. I really like that a lot! Still, I would like to see more innovation/ individuality on the market. Just because one product was a hit doesn't mean we need 5 different devices that attempt a similar outcome. The competition is nice to see though, and competition does breed some benefits for us on the consumer level. There needs to be a whole new engine that will stand out from digital and analog. Something entirely new. We need it, or else we will have instruments forever coming out that are more or less very similar to something else from the past. I hope it happens in hardware form, because the workflow of software is less exciting overall. The korg drumlogue falls squarely into place with the latest hybrid drum machines. I still want one to explore and then sell, but doesn't look like anything that can help me find new musical territory.

5:55 sadly, Korg relies on off-the-shelf components like most manufacturers do. Oleds (and LCDs too) only come in a very limited number of sizes. I run into this problem myself as a hobbyist all the time. Can't really blame them for it. Small note: your Patron link links to Patreon itself.

I don’t understand how people can be releasing things like this without multitrack output over usb. It really limits it to people with lots of IO for their daw or people who are dawless.
@oblitafier2 жыл бұрын
Roland have really nailed this. Their Boutique series, and the recent Fathom 0's in particular. They have 32 out, 4 in USB audio at 24bit 96khz. Korg need to address this. It's the one thing stopping me from buying a Modwave immediately, with separate stereo USB outs for each layer.

Oh wow really? I saw this comment and basically stopped caring because of that Can you recommend any at the same price that do have multi track over usb?

Thank you Loopop! You do such superb feature walkthroughs. Edit: heard some other demos and I think it's the drive on the kick that I don't like. The clean kick sounds pretty good to me.

Reminds me alot of the korg er1, but did i miss an lfo for the analogue drums? Running the drums thru a per step pitch randomizer lfo on the er1 was a fun technique.

Beautiful machine! But there is one thing I really don't understand, why does this modern piece of equipment only comes with 32mb. Those are rookie numbers!
@MadcapJake2 жыл бұрын
It could be due to the latency needed or chip sourcing issues
@leonprofes85442 жыл бұрын
This is a drum machine, not a sampler. Maybe in your simple mind, this is "rookie" because you are used to tens of gigabytes of silly sounds and samples which you won't use ever. For a drum machine (it literally says that on the box) 32MB for custom samples is more than enough. If you use 2 neurons in your brain and realize that individual drum samples are short and take around approx. 100kb which is 0.0977MB. Meaning you can import around 300-400 individual drum samples depending on their size. With onboard sounds and 1% of creativity, it would take your whole life to explore all the sounds you could make from it and you still wouldn't be able to try all combinations. Rookie.

@@leonprofes8544 Literally one stereo sample took up 20mb. Im sorry, but 32mb is unacceptable when kids toys have more memory. Some old SD card lost between my couch cushions had more memory 32mb. There is no excuse for this lol

I was excited to watch this excellent video, but I was left a bit bit unimpressed by this machine. I'm not sure why. But that's okay...between my TR-6S, Volca Drum, and Drumbrute, I think I'm good.

KORG sure knows how to do great products, but the 32MB limitation et sample length is kinda of meh :/ I know it's a drum machine like you said, and not a groove box, but still, 32MB... :/ And the last point about being able to reassign the knobs to other params which would much more useful for live was spot on! Thanks again for the amazing review 🙏

Thank you for the review. It looks like an up date of the Electribe ER1 if you ask me and they were great fun and very creative. I really wish Nord would do something in the drum machine format.

Haha...scrolling comments whilst watching and you wrote my exact thoughts! Pondering if it’s as fun and tactile as the ER1! And I think Nord might have read your comment ;)

Interesting development, but I'm not thrilled with the Logue line at all. Very happy with my Arturia DrumBrute and Erica Synths / Sonic Potions LXR-02 drum synth. GREAT VIDEO, as usual, Loopop. This Drumlogue will please many customers and is a cool move by Korg. I may buy one after all.

Thank you very much Loopop. I see the Drumlogue as a groovebox rather than a drum machine. I think Korg they scored with this one. I'm wondering if the Nano plugin in the track 11 can be played polyphonically.

My pleasure. No, nano can't be played polyphonically, at least not in this version.
