Having watched this video back my feeling is that I liked the painting more before I added the rocks and the scraped out areas. Don't get me wrong I still like this painting but I think I'll be doing another one in the future that is more minimalist and moody and emotive and open to interpretation.
This was painted on almost a full sheet of Rives BFK etching paper 46cm x 76cm. 280gsm, white.
The colours used were
Cerulean Blue
Winsor Yellow
Mix of Cobalt Blue and Light Red
Mix of Cobalt Blue, Light Red and Winsor Yellow for the ocean
Lamp Black mixed with Cobalt Blue and Light Red for the rocks
Some Winsor Yellow for the bit of light in the bottom left corner of the rocks.
The brushes used were
2 inch Holbein Hake
1 inch Holbein Hake
Small round series 7 winsor and newton sable for signing the painting
Other
A razor blade to scratch out the lights
And of a spray bottle
Tissues
MDF board and 3M magic tape to tape the paper to the board and 3M removable tape to tape off the horizon.
Music
Things we wouldn't say by Michael FK
Dusk to dawn by Josh Leak
Better now by Philip Daniel Zach

Hiya Scott, I've been a subscriber for a while but don't often comment, but I absolutely love your work and you as a great inspiration to me. To me, this painting is a beautiful rendition of a peaceful seascape with a virtual flat calm and the water just gliding onto the shore so gently, hardly causing a ripple. Fabulous. Thanks very much Scott, take care, David. (England )

Scott this is so magnificent. I know you say it is more realistic than the style that you usually work in but this - for me - is such a perfect coming together of realistic and semi-abstract. Wow! Thank you.

Hi Louis! I agree! I really like the tones of the sea that represent it fairly accurately and the loose brush work that from a distance work to create a representation of the landscape. I will continue to follow this path a bit more! Cheers Scott

Beautiful. I miss being able to attempt watercolour. It gave me so much joy. Sadly, I had a stroke so I am now left handed which is awkward so say the least. But after watching him paint I am inspired to keep trying. The satisfaction of watching him set down the colour and deal with results was magical. His technique and talent are very much light years ahead of anything I could achieve.

Wow Thank you so much I have learnt an enormous amount in a very short time. Many videos show the working on the painting yours shows the whole thing(amazing how you paint whilest letting us all see what you are doing),very few videos actually also show the thinking including the magical moment of doubt transforming into action. The little asides like cleaning the ruler to avoid mistakes done in a non-patronising way make you a wonderful teacher. I have really enjoyed watching you work and learned so much ,so thank you very much.

Hi John! Thanks! Yes check out Patreon! There is almost a full introductory course on there now and soon will be a second course. I hopefully help my Patrons to understand the medium of watercolour so they can paint what they would like with more confidence and joy! Thanks for watching. Cheers Scott

It’s a bit like being a mad scientist, isn’t it. I would like to have seen a straight-on closer view but once I saw the painting hanging, it was stunning.

Hi Cecilia! I know there was not as much detail visible as I would have liked! The top down view is good for that! 👍👍

@@ScottSwinson I went back and watched again on the TV (big screen) and I could see much better. In fact, I caught just a little of that cerulean peeking out at the top. Great effect.

A purely technical suggestion about laying down tape: before you peel tape from its roll turn the free end of the tape upon itself, sticky upon sticky, for an easy to find lifting tab when all is complete. Otherwise, I'm quite enjoying many of your video outcomes. Thanks.

Just absolutely wonderful Scott! Your work just takes my breath away. THANK-YOU for sharing! Have you ever seen the easel called Artrisel(sp?)? It's manufactured in Aussieland. You can have your board in just about every angle, position and height you can possibly think of. You can spin the board you have your paper on around etc. It's pretty amazing. Not as amazing as you, just thought it might be of interest to you. :-)

Hi Julie! Thanks! One of my favourite paintings of 2021! I had a look at the easel! Pretty cool! It could probably work well! Especially when I start painting outdoors more! Thanks! 👍👍

As an admirer and having huge appreciation for your dedication and skill. Is it ok to take one of your photographs and use it as inspiration for a painting. Scott ?

Hi Karol! Of course you can! I'm not precious about images of my paintings for people to use to inspire them to paint! I have been doing that with other artists for years! It's how we learn! Cheers Scott

Scott, this is so lovely. I really love watching your techniques and being along for the ride as your paintings come to life. Just a quick question about the razor scratching bit…does this rough up the paper at all? I’d be so squeamish to try it. Oh, and the tape idea for the horizon is truly brilliant! Thank you! 😍
@ScottSwinson
@ScottSwinson 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Harmony! The razor if used with a metal ruler and lightly will not roughen up the paper at all but if done free hand and too deeply it can gauge the pater a bit! It takes a bit of practice but is totally safe! It is really important to have the paper totally dry before scraping, especially if you are new to that process! Good luck! 👍👍
