I mean, on one hand, being able to recreate a character you vibe with and adore shouldn't be a terrible thing. But if it doesn't mesh with the scenario or the DM, you have to take the L and think of something else. Especially if you create the character to be absolutely overpowered level 1 onwards. Other than that! Awesome video!

Yeah I totally agree. As a DM I always try to first create the character using the class before any Homebrew. Then I might work with you to make spells and features a bit different flavor wise but not mechanically. Then finally I might include a special fear or weapon that does do something Homebrew that is unique to the character that the base game might not have. It’s been pretty successful at my table. The lore part is sometimes harder if the player is being difficult because a lot of the time they aren’t just demanding their character be canon but all their friends, ally factions, home town, and major enemies usually are expected to come with it. That can be tricky because is it possible to make Sasuke and maybe his brother be a recurring villain… yeah if you flavor them as some bloodline of rogues that have some special supernatural ability. But how do I fit in Naruto and everyone else without playing a straight up Naruto campaign? That’s when I think you’re right that there is a point where things don’t mess so you have to just shut it down.

I kinda get the Sauske guy. I want to make characters ‘based’ on Rocket Raccoon and Groot and a character from a book series that I’ve read, but I wouldn’t want to make a carbon copy of the characters.

I like that the Sasuke guy after cooling off realizes why he was wrong. You can 100% base your character off any established character you want. But people can’t expect to be the most broken version of that character day one. He realized that and found a way with the DM to achieve it as a long term goal.

@@lootgoblinmarketplaceLong term is the keyword. It's often better to see the ultimate achievement of a concept as a campaign long project as opposed to "lemme be Chuck Norris off the bat".

One of the first characters I created was based on Dark Link from Legend of Zelda. I had been watching the Super Mario Bros. Super Show at that time. A few of the characters in my first Live Action Role-play were from that show. Dark Link is from Zelda 2 which I had not played but heard about the character and found it to be an interesting concept. The character was never a carbon copy of the character to begin with since I did not know anything about the character other than having seen what the boss looked like at the end of that game. Over the years the character developed into a rather unique character.

Same. I made a character based on Connor from AC3 and it was fun. He just wasn't a carbon copy like you said.

I love my tragic character but I do approach him with the same mindset as guy from first story. I will say this, the start of the story IS my character’s trigger and he is trying to find his equilibrium again ever since. So his journey is more about healing. It’s also planned for him to hit another trigger that should give him some closure in regards to what initially caused the trauma. This is planned around the backstory threads the paladin and I wove in the beginning. It’s for a reveal about the paladin being related to the one who killed almost all of my character’s family (he isn’t aware if some are dead are alive though it does amount to pretty much all being dead to him mentally). When this reveal happens he will be triggered regardless of how that pans out and how he reacts to it. Do I look forward to that? Sure! Paladin and I worked hard on weaving our stories together and it will be a nice story beat for us I feel and a good character arc for us to explore. My character, as I said, is about healing. I intend to do things for him that lead to that. But again I approach it like op in first story. I do not go into constant moping, details, and do not let it make others uncomfortable without consent. I mean, heck, who wants to be upset and traumatized all the time? Even if I believe my character is faking the cheer, I still have him do it because, guess what, he probably wants to at least try being happy and pretending he is, even if he isn’t. That’s why when we had fun quirky contests I had my character participate and encourage the group to as well.

1:03 im just imagining all of the reasons and ways this dm would have done something to keep the party from going into a tavern or finding ways to keep the drinks away like, they'd activate an encounter like a bar fight or something like what critical role did for campaign 3 with monsters appearing out of nowhere, or maybe they physically go into the tavern and the place doesn't serve alcohol due to shipments being late or some people breaking in during closing hours, there's just so many scenarios!

Ngl but flavouring abilities to have same mechanical effects but different visuals is kinda nice option. I'm running soon my first Pathfinder 2e game and we are playing in our homebrew world since we wanted weird mix of urban fantasy and magitek - basically Cyberpunk but replace science with **magic** science. In result, each Class Ability (Like Barbarian's Rage, Monk's Furry of Blows etc.) are not effect or training or other unnatural powers but working cybernetic implants inside one's body. Me and my players find it absolutely funny.

I’m 100% for visual reflavoring and even giving people custom metamagic feats so they can modify spells to be stronger in a new way in exchange for it costing a higher spell slot. I think the base game has so many good kick off points. Your cyberpunk augments being class features works really well as a reflavor of the core way the magic system works. The best too is you can always include the traditional version as well as multiple variants. I think Superhero Comics show you can have a person using high fantasy magic, cyberpunk upgrades, future tech weapons who seem like magic, and aliens whose anatomy allows them to have supernatural like components. It’s a bit messy at times but each character tends to have an internal logic, so you and your DM can always tie that to a core part of D&D or Pathfinder’s base rule set.

@@lootgoblinmarketplace Yep, exactly. Tbh I'm kinda bored of classical "Barbarian Rage just means you become very amgry" or "Druid's Wild Shape just let you magically turn into animals" (even though druids are technically about that xD) or "Rogue's Sneak Attack allows you to... well, attack sneakily" Imo small, especially cosmetic change to how ability works can easily improve gameplay for players. That's why on my list of ideas for characters (Certified forever Game Master moment) I have e.g.: - Halfling Barbarian whose Rage is just Sugar Rush. - Robo Druid who is turning himself into robot versions of animals (wait, I can use that idea in that campaing...) - And something more but I had to find that in my big data base :> Additionally it's not only about class features - for example for purpose of that campaing spells are going to work in the same way mechanically but in different way in rp. When our spellcaster is going to cast Fear they actually disrupt magic flow in enemy head implants sending fear creating pictures directly into target's mind. Or any sort of telepathy is actually adjusting frequency to create private "voice chat" link. Or detection spells are actually special modes of eye cybernetic but one has to learn how to unlock them. Or fire projectile... Welp I'm afraid it is still fire projectile but that's really fine for us since pure magic still exists XD But seriously I would like to see more ppl adding a bit flavour to make simple things more interesting.

I'm really happy you can call out some people for being a little too soft in or out of these stories. It feels like some RPG horror story KZbinrs will, far too often, try to take the high road and preach for a peaceful conclusion, sometimes not realizing that some problem players or DMs are just far too unreasonable or stubborn for such a thing to be even possible. D&D Doge is the biggest example I've found of being way, WAY too soft and generous with problem people recounted in horror stories, to the point where he sometimes has baffling or even bad takes on the situation. Mind you, I still love listening to Doge and watching his videos, but I've just been frustrated by his takes more than once in the past, and it was always because he either claims the OP didn't try hard enough for the peaceful or more delicate approach (when they most certainly did) or just generally disapproves when a horror story understandably ended in screaming matches or flipped tables.

So, regarding the Goku example, MasakoX had a Saiyan character in the Sands of Sala'bim campaign where his race unlocked new abilities as his character leveled up. I'd say ask him about that, and then make the character a Way of the Sun Fist monk. As for the Air Genasi, I wonder if the inconsistencies for his backstory were intentional, and that he was actually just a compulsive liar. Still a poorly played character and a bad player, but a character who keeps changing their backstory could really just be a charlatan. Or a Henderson, but that requires much more complex changes to work, not just slight changes in detail. (And for those planning on making Hendersons, don't. Not unless you're 100% sure that the DM is an unrepentant absolute monster who deserves to have a Henderson unleashed on them)

I would say for the first story, get an empty beer bottle or can and fill it with soda or something and drink it in front if him. I mean if the GM is going to be a dick, be a dick back is what I say. I always say if your going to be a dick, your going to get fucked. It's a don't get mad, get even type of scenario.

Sharingan is a supernatural ability passed down through a bloodline. To me, that says sorcerer. Like, I understand making sasuke a monk for flavor, but you can flavor things however you want. Make your mechanics decisions based on mechanics.

Gonzo sounds dissociative to me. Generally that's indicative of someone who has been abused or suffered trauma in real life, and been unable to socialize properly, or is on the autism spectrum, which makes them have to work very hard to understand normal interactions. However, that also sounds a bit like drug or alcohol addiction. When you have to deal with this, you have to set boundaries very clearly, reinforce the limits on what they're allowed to do, and give tons of positive reinforcement for good behaviors. Which can be exhausting.

playing a character 'based' on one from your favorite media is cringe, IF the rest of the group is playing regular characters and expect particular tone imo, a movie where yoda teams up with doom guy and toph to stop a decepticon invasion, makes much more sense than saving private ryan starring the punisher

0:28 It's "Crowe's Perch". Also, you mispronounced Sasuke's abilities, and yes, being a character that already exists is beyond cringe - it's unimaginative. You can't just take a character, especially one made by someone else, and put them into another world where their abilities would make no sense just because you think they're cool. It's worse than a pornographic fan-fic. It's one think if you want to have a character that's similar to one that already exists, but this is just lazy. The story at the end just proves my point. Besides, Sasuke is the worst example of this, as most people that try to portray him make him out to be this stereotypical lone wolf edgelord, even though he almost never worked alone and he has tons of friends, an apprentice, and even a wife and daughter.

Oh wow, idk how I didn’t catch that while editing with Crowe. I avoid playing copies of characters myself but I feel like for some people it can be a comfort place start before branching into their own characters.

My sidestep for this would be to nudge them into making their character a "legally distinct bootleg version" of the existing one, allowing them a degree of originality and a branching path of character development.
