That must take a long time to fill up. Thanks for the video. I only learned that these grinders exist yesterday and have been browsing videos of them. Watching it work is kind of like those "Most Satisfying" videos on KZbin. It is very satisfying to see the rails being ground and all those sparks flying.

I imagine they pre-determine where they refill water. Thought about some little town whose water bill goes up 30% when LORAM comes through town. 🤯

It's actually against the law in most places to do what they did unless the water company has provided a meter for them to use when they connect to a fire hydrant. It's stealing water. And if I see anyone (other than the fire department) drawing water from a hydrant without the meter, I'll probably call the police on them.

under heavy loads or high traffic the rails mushroom out and go flat with burrs on the edges, the Loram rail reprofiling system grinds off the burrs and puts the crown back on the rail top surface

I cannot believe that they haven't done like we did on the steam engine's tender. We installed a fitting to hook a fire hose up so that you didn't have to monitor it constantly. In their case, they should have a fill pipe on each side at a point where you can hook up from the ground.
@WideWorldofTrains
@WideWorldofTrains 8 жыл бұрын
+gravelydon You mean when they fill the tank?
@gravelydon7072
@gravelydon7072 8 жыл бұрын
Yes. No need to drag a hose to the top of the tank. And as I've done it with 4" fire hoses with brass fittings, you want to keep them as close to the ground as possible. And keep the person on the ground.

You're kidding. They ran the hose to to the hatch on the top of the water car ? There are connections at the lower frame to fill the cars. And you can fill all 3 water cars from multiple points on the machine. And you never 'run out of water'. Once you're down to 5000 gallons, you stop grinding.

@williammain3247

Unfortunately, I cannot embed source URIs here, but UP suggests a tank car contains no more than 31,000 gallons and the color of the fire hydrant indicates the gallons per minute it can deliver. Green hydrants are up to 1,500 gallons per minute so…. 31,000 divided by 1,500 equals as little as 20 minutes and 40 seconds per train car not counting connection and disconnection.

So is the grinding controlled by the guy in the very front? How does he know when to pull each grinder up at a crossing? Sorry if these are dumb questions, still learning.
@davidchristie4008
@davidchristie4008 6 жыл бұрын
Christopher Greany there are “Vistas”, if I remember correctly on the name, on the front of train and rear of caboose. They are lasers that read each rail and determine the grinding needs. There are 8 grinding motors per carriage (4 motors on each side of each carriage). The grinding stones are circular at about 6” thick weighing about 35-40 pounds. Think of a thick 40 pound doughnut. The driver flips a switch at crossings to make carriages “step” over. There are also individual switches for each carriage and each individual grinding motor. They can lift/lower individuals, groups and all depending on needs. They know where to lift based on counting cars that have passed over the crossing.

@gravelydon7072
@gravelydon7072 8 жыл бұрын
Wheels on steel rail tend to wear the rail profile to a shape where there is a square edge on the inside edge of a rail and a section of lip on the outside. While it is wearing the inside it also tends to wear them to a saw tooth pattern that increases the wheel wear. By grinding the rail smooth again and profiling it the rail can stay in place and be continue to be used. Otherwise it would have to be replaced or turned so that the outside becomes the inside. Gets multiple wears out of the same section of rail saving money.
