Kind of makes my twice-annual dental checkup seem rather trivial….

Do they use these on overhead tracks without "floors"? Would be cool to see a spark shower raining down on Broadway...

I'm sure that grinder went further down those express tracks to Church Av since a smooth rail surface will decrease the houses rumbling in Windsor Terrace (like the one I grew up in). So here's the question that has stumped me for over 50 years...Why do the Crosstown express and local tracks separate at 7th Av where the express tracks run under Prospect Park while the local tracks hug the boundary of the park along Prospect Park West. And why do the express tracks cut under houses from Prospect Park Southwest to about 11th Av and Sherman St before making the curve to Prospect Av??? Wouldn't taking the tracks a little farther east to cut right under 11th Av have made more sense? And the local tracks from 7th Av to 15th St also make some wild curves and required many homes to be demolished during the early 1930s. Wouldn't it have made more sense to take both tracks under the Park to 11th Av and have a local stop near 11th Av and Prospect Park Southwest? ANY ANSWERS? ANYBODY?

I don’t understand what’s the purpose of a rail grinder. The wheels themselves with all the constant use smooths out the rails and makes em well-suited for the wheels. I can somewhat understand on curves but on straight rail… not sure.

Well it's to remove irregularities on the tracks and other corrugations to make for a better ride experience.

Supervisor is this machine here…rail grinding is used to remove defects yes but also used to create the desired rail profile to achieve optimal wheel to rail contact with an inch or so width rising band. Regardless of the type tangent or curve, rail will flatten out over time causing wide running bands decreasing rail life and a rough ride.

Hope you are wearing a respirator as the amount of steel dust in the air can be a serious health hazard.
