Lord Jamar talks about his experience of being on a major record label. Also, he talks about how the label didn't even know what type of artist they were, they just wanted to have an artist from the rap genre on their record label. Lord Jamar felt that his label bootlegged their music to suppress their political power in the music industry.

Jamar is right, Brand Nubian tape was all over the streets, literally. The early 90s in NYC was the boom of the bootleg era. Their album was in high demand and the bootleg tape was all over Harlem. I was 11, i bought the official tape ($10) instead of buying the bootleg($3 or $4) because I wanted to support

LJ is so goofy. The reason he never went platinum is because he isolated his audience. White people didn't want to hear that 5% baloney. That was HIS choice. Remember : this was the same LJ that tried to write a gay bashing verse on Tribe's "Low End Theory" and it got pulled off the album. He specifically chose who he wanted to accept money from and it was a very small niche audience. That was his decision and his rhyme topics solidified that. Puba split off and did more neutralized music for the masses and thus he did better financially. This whole "blaming whitey for everything" bulls**t is getting tired now. Jamar is just straight up goofy.

I agree. Jamar only wanted money from the black community which is a very tiny demographic. He blasted everyone outside of it on purpose and then wonders why his record sales didn't match other groups who stayed neutral. Jamar blaming the record label for his own piss poor life choices is a cornball move. On top of that, lying about why he's broke makes him extra goofy.

Respectfully, that theory doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Why would the label green light a second album from the group then? On top of that, Puba left the group after the first album. He was the main draw. Elektra obviously believed in Jamar and X because they gave them another shot and they dropped a classic follow up album without Puba. Those leaks most likely came from disgruntled/racist studio engineers trying to make a quick buck on some hating ish.

it makes sense for the reasons he stated. a sale is a sale, only with the bootleg, they didn’t have to pay the artists royalties, but they still made money off of it. and, as he said, it was a way to make them not have as much power because they weren’t coons. they were a threat to the systems that controlled the labels. and you gotta remember, some labels signed certain artists only to hold them back so they wouldn’t be competition for the artists they really wanted to promote.
