First, let's clear up a popular misconception. First, most slavery on the African continent was more akin to European indentured servitude than it was to American chattel slavery, so this idea that "Africans massively enslaved their own people" was not the dehumanizing slavery in the context of ongoing whips, chains, rape, castration and brutality that American slavery was. Second, Africans rarely sold their OWN people. People forget that the Africans black Americans descend from were from dozens upon dozens of different ethnic groups, languages, histories, religions, lifestyles, etc. across West, Central and Southeast Africa and literally had no more in common with each other culturally than a person from India and a person from China does, despite the fact they're both Asian. There were in fact many slaves who were directly kidnapped by Europeans, and by contractors Europeans hired. But most slaves were sold to Europeans by Africans, but Africans did not necessarily sell out their "own" people. Africans sold out their rival ethnic groups, prisoners of war, sometimes criminals from their own groups, who at the time, they did not view as "their people" but as rivals or enemies. But Europeans manipulated small rivalries and made them much larger in scale, armed one group to conquer others to get slaves, then armed other groups to defend themselves, etc. and no matter who won, Europeans procured more slaves. It was basically a classic case of divide and conquer. But no, they were not "tricked" in the sense of being "bribed" to coming to the United States, especially considering that the United States didn't even exist at the time the first Africans were enslaved. It wasn't even a concept. It was still just a little British colony that needed a lot of manpower to mine its resources. People forget that only after the slave trade took more than 12 million people from the African continent, (many of which were skilled artisans, soldiers, carpenters, farmers, builders, etc), did European nations began colonizing Africa. Simply because before, West and Central African kingdoms were very well organized, but not after the transatlantic slave trade, which took an enormous amount of manpower from the continent and devastated previously organized societies. It would be like someone trying to conquer weakened European nations immediately after WW2. In that context, Africans were "tricked" because they were manipulated into escalated warfare and weakened each other's kingdoms, making them ripe for takeover later. But to say enslaved Africans were not forced into slavery is a damn lie. The Africans who were enslaved, either initially by rivals for Europeans or by Europeans directly , were very much forced into slavery. There was nothing optional about it.

"First, slavery on the African continent was more akin to European indentured servitude" You're suggesting that all slavery in Africa was uniform in its standards? Simply not the case. Otherwise, you typically narrate slavery as being a European practice (seemingly ignorant or disinterested in the equally severe Islamic slave trade, or the history of slavery in East Asia, etc) visited on Africans. And I find your claims that the administration of Western and Central African kingdoms (most of whom encouraged slavery, BTW, and some of whom profited from the trade of slaves) were compromised by the North American slave trade completely facetious. Can you point to the work of any reputable historian who has documented such a claim? The slaves taken from Africa were not of the aristocracy. By and large, they were an underclass seen as disposable in their de facto homelands (and also by and large in their adoptive homelands).
@davidelliott1594
@davidelliott1594 7 жыл бұрын
+mymentor Let"s address your claims. To begin, it is a very well documented fact by any number of historians and history books that "in MOST African societies where slavery was prevalent, the enslaved people were not treated as chattel slaves and were given certain rights in a system similar to indentured servitude elsewhere in the world." Lovejoy, Paul E. (2012). Transformations of Slavery: A History of Slavery in Africa. That is just a quick example for the purpose of this text, but literally ANY book on African slavery will tell you that. There was no suggestion that ALL slavery that occurred on the African continent was uniform in its standards, also considering not everyone on the African continent is indigenous to that continent. For example, like its name implied, the Arab slave trade originated with Arabs, not with the indigenous African populace. Nor did anyone suggest that slavery was strictly a European institution and existed on no other continent on Earth, including the middle East, East Asia, etc. But last I checked, this video, and this the conversation of this forum, is about the African slaves taken during the Atlantic Slave trade, and those captives were the African ancestors of most black Americans, and that specific trade was originated and carried on by Europeans, primarily the Portuguese, the Spanish, and the British. The Arab slave trade did not primarily occur in West Africa. The Arab Slave Trade occurred in Northeast and Eastern Africa, and the severity of that trade originated with Arabs, not indigenous Africans. And while deeply severe, would I compare that with more than 12 million people being taken across an ocean in conditions so disgusting that literally millions died just on the journey? No, I wouldn't. Would I compare that to the slavery where masters were known to sodomized their male slaves, routinely rape and impregnated their female slaves and enslaved their own children, and bred their slaves like cattle. No, I'm going to stick with American slavery being a bit more severe. Not that it's a popularity contest. And yes, it is also a know historic fact, and well documented, that Europeans did escalate the warfare between African states, and turn slavery in West and Central Africa into a "massive business enterprise." This is literally basic information found in hundreds of books about the transatlantic slave trade. The fact is even in hundreds of videos across the net. Here is a five minute long one by TED-ED, which is good for children and adults. Type in "the Atlantic Slave Trade, what too few textbooks told you." In reference to most African slaves being seen as an underclass in their own societies, I will repeat another fact, which is that the Africans sold by other Africans were from RIVAL tribes, and either considered enemies, debtors, or prisoner's of war by the people they were sold by. They were not mostly sold by their OWN societies, but by rival ones. Many of prisoners of war, which made them soldiers. Many were kidnapped during raids, which means they could have been on any level in own societies. A famous and notable example of an enslaved West African nobleman in the United States was Abdul Rahman Ibrahim ibn Sori, who was an Amir in West Africa who was captured and enslaved in the United States for more than 40 years, until he was freed by order of President John Quincy Adams after the sultan of Morocco asked for his release. Off that example alone, imagine how many people were enslaved whose lineage was not known in their own societies. You cannot say what a person's status was in their OWN societies because the vast majority of the time, they were captured and sold by RIVAL societies, meaning societies not their own.

Everyone talks a big game but when it comes to it, nobody steps up. So you're lucky there's a platform to express these things at all. Not to mention how the black community drag eachother down every chance they get. What happend back then was disgusting, horrible and should not have happend. But if the black community doesn't stop idolizing dumb shit and continues to disrespect themselves, nobody is going to elevate. There's a small percentage of black people who don't reinforce the stereotypes. Salute to them. Hard working , caring, self educated or educated otherwise people. People with morals and values. The youth gets worse and worse and worse. And don't give me that shit about the white man setting us up like that. I was born and raised in the ghetto. And made an effort to leave. I don't dump all my money on gucci flip flop or support gang banging music artists. I don't go around getting chicks knocked up and I save my money for things that I needed like school. Our community just loves the hood too much. And yall are pretending we are forced into that shit. It's generations of our folk who just didn't give a shit. You can either grow from what happend during Jim crow and prior or continue to regress and point fingers in 2019.

Because skin color was never an identity in Africa. Africans are and were different people and not just one people. However in Europe and Asia skin color or being of the same race wasn't enough too. Skin color is an identity is an American invention. Native Americans were also tribalistic and the Europeans took advantage of it. Black Americans have huge problem when it comes to history they can't cope with unpleasant facts and truth. Some black Americans deny to be African and claim to be Native Americans that were never enslaved and other claim to be the real Jews from the bible. Really sad.

BurrosSWE The Congo (like the entirety of Africa today) is a calamity because of European greed and imperialism. The Congo was decimated in the late 18 - early 1900s by King Leopold ll of Belgium who slaughtered 15 MILLION natives in labor camps, mutilating men, women, and children, while working them to death and selling thousands into slavery. This was the largest single act of genocide in HUMAN HISTORY. Don't dare speak on history you know nothing of

The anglo-Egyptian treaty to outlaw the trafficking of Europeans by Arabs in Egypt wasn't signed until 1877. The notion that slavery wasn't as cruel is also a fallacy being that slaves were marched across the Sahara (83% death rate) and some were castrated before the journey - - small examples of course. Also only a small percentage of slaves were kidnapped, most were sold for goods by other Africans. Indeed Europeans mastered the industry but it is also a fact that the quakers and British catholics were the amongst the first objectors to the immorality of slavery. If it wasn't for Europeans opposition to slavery, the institution would still exist globally. The belief that Europeans are inherently more evil undermines the actual state of civilization in times past. Even your high & mighty "Moors" were participants in the institution of slavery. Slavery is not a race thing. It's a vulnerability thing.

Most slaves didn’t choose slavery, slavery chose them and they went along with it because they perceived the only alternative - death - as even worse. Slavery to the slave was never a choice It took more than choosing to not have a slave mentality to get black people to where they are today and to where they are going in the future. But refusing to accept that status quo, to not have that slave mentality, was/is the first step in making the needed changes.

I value all of the interviews with Lord Jamar . The tribes were at war similar to the crips and blood , Africa has always been divided and neighboring kingdom refuse to put their ego aside to unite. However , Ethiopia is an exception under the leadership of Haile Sallsie and Shaka Zulu in South Africa was another example of Africans uniting to fight the yurugu . Unfortunately our strength has always been our weakness , we refuse to join forces.

John Hawkins began trading in humans in 1564. The first Africans DID IN FACT come over by their own volition, not under a false pretense. They came as bond servants and after their terms were over, they were freed. They would convert to Christianity and live free lives like anybody else in the colonies. THOUSANDS of our people came by their own volition from Spain, Portugal and The West Indies. The slave trade that we're led to believe happened, began after 1681 when Europeans in this new land began to call themselves "white." One day Vlad, I'll be in that chair and will give you the true history with reference. The Moors are on the scenes teaching now. Peace

First of all, the "white man" did NOT start the slave trade. This trade has been going on for centuries: romans, persians, arabs, north african tribes, ottoman empire etc etc. Fact. And obviously britain, france, portugal and spain got into the business when colonialism, as we intend it, started to show it's effect and cheap labor was needed. Yeah, you can always blame the "white man", but slave trade with all its terrible consequences has always been done, just look at the Pyramids...

Yeah. The pyramid was built by those who followed the dead kings and supposed Gods who the pyramids were often built for. The Atlantic Slave Trade became much more based on race than any other, and it was much more brutal and inhumane because of the tactics they used to break slaves.
@jonathanmosher72
@jonathanmosher72 6 жыл бұрын
Of course, it was racial because white people were using people of a different color, so all blacks were seen as slaves. It was brutal, but in the Old Testament, it says you can beat a slave as long as they don't die within 3 days of the beating. Black on black tribal slavery in Africa is probably the worst though. We have pictures of that if you didn't meet a quota or tried to run away, they'd rape or mutilate your family members, mutilate your daughters' vagina or cut off her limbs. We know this because it's been documented by the people who lived through it, not by someone who wants to believe in whatever sounds best.
@E.Johansson
@E.Johansson 6 жыл бұрын
World Class Thats horseshit. The worst slave trade was in Africa and Asia (By asians and arabs). This is a common facts if you've studied history. The Atlantic Slave trade was based not on race but on ethnicity and rivalry between different african tribes. The african tribes sold their POV to the slavetraders so that they could get rid of rivaling tribes. So in other words, yes it was based on ethninicty not on race and it was the blacks who wanted to get rid of other blacks. The pyramid was build by slaves and the Pharaoh and people living in Egypt during this time was not blacks but Egyptians looking like todays Coptic people of Egypt. They have Olivecolored skin and looks like semites not sub-saharan blacks. This is a fabricated lie only told in USA, here in Europe everybody knows the truth based on actual scientific evidence in from of DNA, bone-structure and so on.

In the 1400s Africa was full of Kingdoms and Europeans were just settling in the America’s and didn’t have a big enough population to cultivate the land. So they looked to Africa specifically for labor/slaves. African Kings traded their prisoners for guns, rum and goods. African Kingdoms even started wars with their neighbors specifically to capture prisoners/Africans to traded them to the Europeans for Goods. That’s how the Atlantic slave trade began.

5:17 one word, religion. Nations ruled by a muslim wouldn't look out for so called 'pagan' kingdoms and even indulged in the trade. Nations that became christian were often passive in relation to the activities of europeans. There were kingdoms which rose and resisted such as Ghana, The Mossi, and Angola with Queen Nzingha. Africa was never completely subdued with Ethiopia for example never being colonized.
