Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad
Lord Jim: A young British seaman who first mate on the ship Patna joins the captain and officers in making a terrible yet understandable decision which hounds Jim for the rest of his life. Can their be redemption for such an act? It is thought by some historians that Lord Jim was inspired by a similar incident aboard the ship SS Jedah in 1880. Enjoy! Film length i.e. abridged.
Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski was born in Berdychiv Ukraine. At age 4, Joseph had to follow his father, who had been convicted by Russia for his pro Poland activism, into exile, along with his mother. By age 12, both parents had died of tuberculosis. His upbringing was then provided by a caring uncle. At age 16, Joseph began his life on the high seas. At 21, he first came to Britain and decided to stay even though he spoke little English. He spent the next 16 years working in the British Merchant Navy, and at age 29 he earned his master marine certificate and became a British Citizen. Finally at 36 Joseph Conrad gave up sailing and became a writer. Mr. Conrad’s writing was influenced his experience at sea and a particularly awful 4 month stay in the Congo which led to his most grim work, Heart of Darkness.

Simon MacCorkindale (1952-2010) Born in Ely, England, young Simon’s family moved frequently throughout Europe due to the father’s military career. Simon chose acting over becoming a diplomat. His role in Death on the Nile (1978), was an important career break, after which he moved to the US. He had the starring role in the strange short-lived series Manimal. Other films he performed in include: Jaws 3D, The Sword and the Sorcerer, the pre-WWI Thriller: The Riddle of the Sands which starred Michael York who reads Candide here on GBOT 😊. On TV Simon MacCorkindale made a number of guest appearances in TV series and miniseries: Jesus of Nazareth, Beasts, I Claudius, The Dukes of Hazard, Hammer House of Horror. Mr. MacCorkindale was a regular on Falcon Crest and starred in the popular series Counterstrike and Casualty. Simon also starred in a short film An Outpost of Progress based on the story with the same name by Joseph Conrad. It can be streamed here on YT. I hope you enjoy his performance in Lord Jim.
