Beautifully written. Appreciate it as an author today of adventure stories for young adults. 'They' say the genre is out of date; unpopular nowadays. I'm willing to be the exception. One writes what we have in us.

A bridge to my childhood when we found adventure in the written word...in an analogue world where digital did not exist, when televisions the size of a small bus were rare, and ready meals had not been invented. I thank my lucky stars for those days. This classic tale is welcome and much appreciated. Thank you.

Growing up in South Africa, we didn't have television until the mid 70's. We spent our free time outside exploring the wilderness and reading books by CS Forester.

It’s nice to hear this novel read by the man who played a very good Hornblower in the tv series. Like listening to Sherlock Homes read by Benedict Cumberbatch

These were the perfect boy's adventure stories all full of honor and courage. Too bad more people never learn the pleasure of this conduct.

Perfect adventures for women and men of any age. As a girl I read Beat to Quarters when I was about 10 years old.

The Horatio Hornblower audiobook series performed by Christian Rodska were the very first audiobooks I happened upon on KZbin. It was my first encounter with KZbin and I was won over totally and completely. Years have gone by and I have sought to find Rodska’s narrations, but alas, to no avail. Ioan Grifudd’s reading is also excellent. Thank you for posting this-please keep us afloat with more!!

I am so with you on this @somewhereintime3930 those Christian Rodska performances were incredible- they got me through covid lockdowns. I've never seen or heard of them anywhere since.

With Horatio Hornblower sailing the seas and Richard Sharpe marching across the continent, Bonaparte never stood a chance.

I agree completely about the link to childhood - I also remember a brilliant BBC drama of many of the Hornblower books with brilliant sound effects. I had to do The Gun at school as well. Thank you for posting this one - others would be welcome.

Why were the tv series video's removed from KZbin???

This must be a very condensed version of the original book

This must be abridged?

Why is it so severely edited?? All the beautiful genius of EM Forster's writings are deleted. The original novel is excellent. This is like a rushed screenplay version. Sad.

Whole sections have been skipped over. WTF? Not something I wish to lidten to.Very Disappointed.

In my opinion, a VERY POOR rendition. Many ( most? ) of the sections giving detail into Hornblower himself as well as the engagements are missing. Get the real unabridged version. Worth the small cost. Many public libraries have the Christian Rodska narrated audiobooks.
