It's not Irish but it's a good song.
I was misinformed when I made the video but I have since gotten a LOT of comments correcting me. But it's not like I can edit the video now.

Listening to this song brings tears to my eyes, I heard this song in my heart after waking up in the morning but I could only remember the chorus (after singing it at school over 50 year ago), I was feeling low that morning, however listening to the song restored by soul and cause me remember the promises of God. Thank you Jesus, your love is everlasting to everlasting.

I love the tempo of this rendition of the song. Many times I've heard it sung in churches and because of the pace and tone the song becomes depressing and seems to focus on death. To me this version celebrates the life of Christ.

My favorite verse I learned differently. It went: "I danced on the Friday when the sky turned black. It's hard to dance with the Devil on your back. They murdered me and they thought I'd gone. But I am The Dance and I still go on." To me this is a bit more "powerful" than the verse here, which seems to be standard.

I absolutely LOVE this version! Like most people in the UK, I remember singing this enthusiastically at primary school. I was just walking my dogs (Fri 7th June), and the sky did indeed turn black. I rushed home before the downpour and had this song on loop in my head, but couldn't remember all the verses. Thanks to this video, I've just sung it (very enthusiastically 😆) once again. ❤

It's so interesting to watch how God works in people's lives. I had a lot of trauma in my youth and remember singing the chorus of this song quite frequently, though I didn't know the verses or tied it to Christianity. It wasn't until I was in my mid-40s that I learned the full meaning of the song. To think that God had planted it as a seed to help me through such a very difficult life is dumbfounding. God is so good to me!

I woke singing this when I read Luke 7:31 - 35, they try their tricks to make God do what they want but HE will never lower Himself to their demands! Vs. 32 Just like so many (even in churches) try to make Jesus perform for them, He never will! [I AM THE LORD of the dance said HE. ] HE alone is in total control, trust HIM! Give your heart and all your desires to HIM, He will lead you to amazing places. HIS plan is so much better than yours! Blessings!

Never heard it again after that time. I'm 42 years old now and even now, from time to time the lyrics of this dance through my mind. No pun intended. Glad I was able to find it again.🥰

"Simple Gifts" is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett. Many people think that the tune of "Simple Gifts" is a traditional Celtic one. The song was largely unknown until Aaron Coplandused its melody in Appalachian Spring in 1948. "Lord of the Dance" is a hymn, using this melody, with words written by English songwriter Sydney Carter in 1963. The Carter lyrics were adapted, in ignorance of the actual origins, without authorization or acknowledgments by Ronan Hardiman for Michael Flatley's dance musical Lord of the Dance, which opened in 1996. The melody is used at various points throughout the show, including the piece titled "Lord of the Dance." Other adaptations have occurred in the widespread belief that they are traditional, and in the public domain. It was Flatley that made it sound Irish. KZbin has many versions of "Simple Gifts". Give them a listen and you will see that this is that song. The original lyrics from 1848 are wonderful.

"Many people think" ... many people think that the world flat (if you look around KZbin you'll find them). These are weasel words that convey an opinion but no evidence or facts. The modern fashion of "everything celtic" runs full steam ahead regardless of the real history and culture of Britain and Ireland. So, no, it's not a "celtic" tune, even if people could find evidence that it came from Ireland that still would not make it "celtic".

But you missed an important verse! Part of it is: I danced in the morning when the sky turned black, it's hard to dance with the devil on your back, They whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high, And left me there on a cross to die. They buried my body and they thought I'd gone, But i am the dance and I still go on...

I not religious as such, and listen to heavy metal music, but this is the first song that I heard at primary school that made me feel happy and want to dance, I thought the words were "I am the Lord of the dance settee". My mother never knew why any time music played I would jump on the couch! Still makes me happy at 62! Never realised lyrics till now. May be still hope for me

For those who get confused about the difference between traditional Irish and English tunes and step dancing, here is a good example of old time English tradition. To Americans it looks Irish, but old time Irish (Sean Nós), Scottish, Cape Breton (Canadian) and English step dancing are similar. Don’t forget the old times. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5yVpX-hf9R-osk

The more I play, the more tunes that I know, the connexions between English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish traditional dance tunes and songs become more and more evident. Ethno-nationalism is taking a long time to die in popular culture in Britain and Ireland, and its historical revisionism pollutes the world of folk music. Yes. There is a difference between the folk dance music of England and Ireland. Of course there is ... but there were/are major difference between the musical and dance styles of various regions of both countries. Just look at English display dances to this day (Morris, Rapper, Sword and Stave dancing etc). The story of traditional music in Britain and Ireland is not one of exclusion and hoarding of "national treasures", but one of sharing and borrowing of music and song back and forth over centuries. In fact, a good analogy would be that we all speak the same folk music language but in different accents and dialects. ps. to add a bit more. Also, the more you go into the history of the music, the more you find that many of the differences are modern contrivances. The style of playing traditional Irish music (especially in commercial situations, though this has spilled out into the fashionable ways of playing in sessions etc) has changed radically since the middle of the 20th century. In fact, often consciously so as to differentiate it from English music. It has to be said that there was a conscious effort to do the same with English folk dance music from the 1970s onwards. In some ways I have sympathy with those from the English end of things who felt that they were getting swamped by Irish music and we were losing the distinctive Englishness of much of our dance music ... but as in the Irish tendency, this has gone way too far in the minds of many musicians and has developed into a dogma that has no historical or musical basis.

It's a hymn written by Sydney Carter, an English man, set to an American Shaker hymn "Tis a gift to be simple." But beautifully played here.
