I think the hobbits were unsatisfied because of Bilbo's unexplained (to them) disappearance. Laying down is something you do with the wine itself -- it means laying the bottles on their sides, or nearly so, to keep the corks wet so they don't shrink. So Bungo didn't necessarily own the vineyard, though he might have. The Sackville-Bagginses are Southfarthing property owners, according to The Scouring of the Shire.

I love hobbit banter! Wit with language seems to be just part of their culture. Modern Philosopher Slavoj Zizek talks about how social cohesion in societies are best when people can gently and humorously insult one another, diffusing the potential for cruelty and violence among those who you might have disagreements with. If we had more Hobbitish people in the world, it would be a merrier place for sure. Thank you both!

"very unsatisfied hobbits" I always thought they were wanting an explanation, and maybe apology, for Bilbo's antics -- disappearing with a flash and a bang. I never thought the wastebasket was one of the "pointed" gifts. I mean, it's marked as "with love from Bilbo". And if Dora Baggins is really writing "reams of good advice" -- Tolkien's description, not Bilbo's -- in correspondence, she needs one, for first drafts, letters and envelopes received that she doesn't need to keep, etc. The thing about Angelica is that she's vain: "too obviously considered her face shapely." So the mirror is going to distort her appearance, in a _less_ attractive direction -- making her face look rounder and her nose a bit bigger. Saying the wine was "laid down" refers to the _bottles,_ not the vineyard. It means Bilbo's father got that case of wine and put in his wine cellar to age. (60+ years ago -- _very_ mature!) I suppose Bungo may have owned the vineyard -- he was rich even before he married an heiress -- but the text doesn't imply that.
