Allegory and Metaphor Are utilized in the LOTR The ring is metaphorical of man's greed, desire for power, control.

Tolkien hated allegory in all of its forms. Despite being a practising Catholic. He hated the idea of people inserting their own religious dogma into his works. They are presented as they are, just as they are. Nothing more nothing less.

He also admitted to using it in the same breath, for in his own words, in a work of that magnitude it is impossible not to use allegory in certain lights or areas. He even inserted a Jesus allegory as prophesized in a conversation between and elf and a human woman.

There are also pagan, pre christian elements in it. There is some allusion to a Christian journey, good and bad, it's mostly a story involving pre christian elements.

Tolkien used pagan imagery with Christian/Catholic themes. Tolkien even stated that LOTR is fundamentally a Catholic work indirectly at first but directly after the first revision

@@Artaxian_Debacle yes, but it would be even more appropriate to state that Tolkien used _European lore,_ of which he was most knowledgable, with Christian/Catholic themes. The Lord of the Rings is foremost high European literature. It is very much a Catholic work - a timeless masterpiece at that.
