the reason frodo left at the end was because the curse from the ring + nazguls blade was keeping him constantly depressed and Samwise was taking time away from his own family to help frodo. So frodo made the decision to go to the undying lands where he wouldnt hurt anymore while at the same time no longer being a burden to Samwise so he can be a father/husband to his family. BUT you will be glad to know that many years afterwards, after Sam's wife passes away and his kids are all grown, he sets off on a quest to the undying lands and he makes it, and reunites with frodo :)

He left middle earth because the ring stripped him of his innocence, even just fhe journey alone, meant he could not be content with a simple shire life any more. Like it said "how do you pick up the threads of an old life, there is no going back" He did save the shire, but not himself. Think of soldiers coming back from war, they cant adapt to a little village life anymore, after experiencing such ordeals, high and lows. Their faces in the pub say everything, this is all they ever wanted, but now its not the same, even though its not changed one bit.

Fun facts: the baby Sam holds in the end is his actual daughter, and the baby Rosie is holding is her real daughter, too. The books are quite different, 2 small examples, in the books there is no actual Giant Eye of Fire and also when the Hobbits return to the Shire they actually find it is destroyed and have to fight a battle/war to reclaim it

Yes, Tolkien says in a letter that no one could destroy the Ring willingly once in Mt. Doom. Frodo’s real mission was just to get the Ring there, which he did. That truth was probably only understood by Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadriel though. They knew once the Ring was in Mt. Doom "accident or providence” would have to take over.

Tolkien drew a lot from his experiences fighting in the trenches during World War One. Frodo is left with scars both physical - from the Witch King's blade - and mental - from the Ring - that never fully heal. That's why he leaves to go into the West at the end, where he can finally have peace (the West being essentially heaven in Tolkien's mythology). It's basically a metaphor for PTSD from a generation who didn't have the same understanding of it we do.
@jimsomers8915

I agree with this right up to the point where we pretend that we have an "understanding" of Shell Shock, If we did we wouldn't have to change the euphemism every 20 years or so in a show of performative empathy. If you want to understand PTSD go talk to your recruiter.

My only complaint about the movies was how _dirty_ they did Denethor, the father of Boromir and Faramir. That man used a Palantir, a seeing stone, to go mind-to-mind against Sauron and was winning that fight for decades, until Boromir's death and Sauron's incessant whispers broke him.

In the book, Gollum gets the ring and rejoices like you see in the movie. But then, Eru Elluvatar (god), seeing Gollum celebrating his sin, nudges Gollum. Gollum then trips and falls into the lava. Tolkien said in his correspondence that it was Gollum fully celebrating his sin that destroyed him. It was a warning to us all about indulging in our personal vices. Edit: Fully celebrating his sin is also what ended up destroying the ring. Fully giving yourself over to evil destroys everything, including the evil itself.

When Aragorn says "For Frodo" and the music swells, the choir is singing, "If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword." Repeating what Aragorn said to Frodo in Rivendell. By gambling absolutely everything just to distract Sauron for enough time for Frodo to destroy the Ring, Aragorn is keeping that oath.

Frodo's wound from Weather top, inflicted by the Witch King, had never healed. Also, his soul was damaged by the ring. He had to go to Valinor in order to heal. Sam, many years later, joined him as he was also a ring bearer, even though it was a short time. Legolas, and Gimli with special permission, joined them later. RIP to Bernard Hill (Théoden King), Ian Holm (Bilbo Baggins), and Christopher Lee (Saruman). Lee read The Lord of the Rings books every year from when they were released until his death. He is also the only member of the cast and crew to have actually met Tolkien.

48:16 It was actually Merry's sword that weakened the Witch King enough that Eowen could deliver the final blow. They never go into it in the movie, but in the books, the Hobbits get their swords (except Sting) from a burial site rather than Aragorn. These swords were crafted by Men who so hated the Witch King that the sheer intensity of their desire to see him dead actually infused them with the ability to harm him and the other Nazgul

@@skywillfindyou The Witch King specifically was prophesized to not be killed by a Man, yes. He just took that to mean that no human could kill him. It's kind of a trope in mythology/fiction for prophesies to be purposefully worded in a way that characters (especially evil ones) will likely misinterpret them and cause their downfall, and Tolkien was a big fan of old mythology

Having read the books decades before as a Teen, this for me was the most disappointing scene compared to how I pictured the scene from the Book. When Eowyn blocks the path of the Witch King with her sword and shield, he delivers his line "fool no man can kill me," and Eowyn then tosses aside her helmet revealing her long and beautiful blond hair, delivering her response with confidence, "I am no man." The book then describes the Witch King's momentary hesitation and doubt in response to her, before turning cold again and swinging a crushing blow to her, which temporarily disables her, when Merry sinks his sword into the back of his leg, which then disables the Witch King just long enough to allow Eowyn to deliver the killing blow, which is all a much better visual than delivered in the Movie - the encounter did remove both Eowyn and Merry from the fight, as such contact with the Witch King was disabling for them, which required extended recoveries for both, if I recall correctly from 4 decades ago ....

Below are the lyrics to "Into the West" with more context: Lay down Your sweet and weary head The night is falling You have come to journey's end Sleep now And dream of the ones who came before They are calling From across the distant shore ["The West" AKA The Undying Lands AKA Valinor are the home of the immortal Valar (Archangels), Maiar (Angels), and many of the Elves. There are two ways to get to Valinor either on a ship through dangerous waters or as an immortal spirit, so the lyrics can be interpreted for both ways. The immortals can be heard singing near Valinor's shore.] Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping [This is about mourning death of immortal souls or mourning leaving Middle Earth by living people as they travel to Valinor. Gandalf (angel) traveled there both ways after he died fighting the Balrog (fallen angel) and on the ship with the Ring Bearers since he was given one of the elven rings by the elven Shipwright.] What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? Across the sea A pale moon rises The ships have come to carry you home [Gandalf describes approaching Valinor to Pippin similar to this and the following verses. Gandalf is a good authority on this since he lived there for thousands of years before taking the form of a Wizard and he recently made a round-trip.] And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water All Souls pass [In the movie, Gandalf kinda lies to Pippin. All souls do not pass. Only immortal souls go to Valinor, but mortal souls such as Men (maybe Dwarves, Ents, and Hobbits) go to a special "Heaven" created by Eru Ilúvatar (monotheistic god) that not even the Valar can enter.] Hope fades Into the world of night Through shadows falling Out of memory and time Don't say We have come now to the end White shores are calling You and I will meet again And you'll be here in my arms Just sleeping [Gandalf the White describes this psychedelic experience when he surprises Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli.] And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water Grey ships pass Into the West [Frodo and Bilbo are some of the very few exceptions for mortals taking ships to Valinor. After Rosie dies, Sam takes a ship to Valinor since he was a Ring Bearer. Legolas and Gimli sail to Valinor. Gimli is the only Dwarf to enter Valinor where he is called Elf-friend.] ["Into the West" is about overcoming death with eternal life.]

“Are you insane?!” I think you missed something about Pippin when he offered his service to Denethor. Was it clever or wise to do what he did in that moment? No, perhaps not, but it was nonetheless a moral imperative for Pippin. He and Boromir had been close, and Boromir gave every ounce of strength he had to try to defend him, and died in the attempt. That show of courage, honor, dedication, and sacrifice would have deeply affected Pippin, and Pippin would feel partly responsible for Boromir’s death. So in the moment of meeting Boromir’s father, farthest from Pippin’s mind was the thought of being sly, holding his cards close to his chest. He chose to Honor Boromir’s sacrifice the best way he could, which shows a goodness and nobility to pippin’s character, and I dare say, some beautiful character growth.

As long as it had control of Frodo, it thought it had a chance to survive, As soon as Frodo decided to reach for Sam and save himself (abandon the ring), the ring had no remaining options and slipped into the lava and destruction. The End result would be that the Ring will subdue him completely and he will dwindle and behome something like the Nazgul, a servant of Sauron without any own will or peronality. And yes the Ring doesnt still have complete Power over him when Frodo met him. Smeagol is still there, but also the Evil Gollum who gets stronger and stronger because they came closer to Mount Doom where the Ring was created. And as closer as it gets there even more so grows its Power and the greed that it produces inside Smeagol

It's never stated in the movies for whatever reason (perhaps because no one else knew), but Sauron embedded a failsafe in the Ring where it is at it's most powerful once you're standing on the edge of the stone terrace above the Sea of Fire inside of Mt. Doom because that's where Sauron first forged it. Once you get to that point, it actually becomes impossible for someone to toss it into the lava and destroy it. The best way to destroy it at that point is the way they chose to do it here in the film. By having two people so enthralled by it's intoxicating power that they try to kill one another to reclaim it for themselves. The book opts for an anticlimactic conclusion by having Gollum simply fall into the lava by accident whilst celebrating reclaiming the Ring. I've always considered this an unsatisfying resolution. I'm glad the filmmakers chose to allude to the failsafe that Sauron gave it by having it backfire on him in the event that two people are standing on the edge of the stone terrace where he first crafted the One Ring because the enhanced levels of negativity it's emitting starts working against it to compel the loser to kill the other if he can't have the ring himself.

Though you too were a Ring-bearer, if only for a little while. Your time may come. Do not be too sad, Sam. You cannot be always torn in two. You will have to be one and whole, for many years. You have so much to enjoy and to be, and to do.' 'But,' said Sam, and tears started in his eyes, 'I thought you were going to enjoy the Shire, too. for years and years, after all you have done.' 'So I thought too, once. But I have been too deeply hurt, Sam. I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: some one has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them. But you are my heir: all that I had and might have had I leave to you. And also you have Rose, and Elanor; and Frodo-lad will come, and Rosie-lass, and Merry, and Goldilocks, and Pippin; and perhaps more that I cannot see. Your hands and your wits will be needed everywhere. You will be the Mayor, of course, as long as you want to be, and the most famous gardener in history; and you will read things out of the Red Book, and keep alive the memory of the age that is gone. so that people will remember the Great Danger and so love their beloved land all the more. And that will keep you as busy and as happy as anyone can be, as long as your part of the Story goes on...'

Thus Gandalf's intuition was correct, right from the first movie: "My heart tells me that Gollum has something to do, for good or evil, before this is over." It was always Gollum's destiny that he would finally seize the Ring and go into the fire with it. Without his presence at Mount Doom, the whole quest would have failed when Frodo could not find the will to destroy the Ring.

I love that wits "I am no man!" Break the scary spell-like words "No man can kill me!" Similarly, we see "Darkness" as something cold, scary, deathly. Something we frightfully cover away and run from. Yet a tiny candlelight is able to make the same darkness flee. It's always going to be like that. Big words and great powers defeated by a witty, short remark. As for Frodo leaving. Well, it's the same as the youngest brother in the Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows story. Cheating death is fine, but you ultimately have to bow to it and let it take you away. Frodo escaped death so many times, and slowly, his soul was enslaved by its cold grasp. Life didn't feel right for him. And when he accepted his 'death,' that's when the grip loosened, and he was able to smile.

Why Gollum looked like that was because the ring gave him unnatural longevity. At the time of Frodo he was 500 years old. It was already keeping Bilbo young beyond his years.

Until this very moment I had never thought about this, but when you noted the fact about Smeagol and Gollum's voice in the opening. I just realized he says, "because it's my birthday and I wants it." and it was in fact the day that Gollum was born.

Aat 54:47, the producers had trouble finding a desert landscape of any extent in New Zealand for this scene. What they ended up with was a military training ground. The area had been a mine field, but "all the mines had been cleared." And the actors were warned not to go too far beyond the boundaries of the cleared area. All in an actor's daily work...

LOTR is my favorite film and I never get tired of it. That being said I don't really like how they handled Frodo in Mt Doom. Him claiming and putting on the Ring is perfect but in the book once Gollum gets the Ring back Frodo doesn't go for it again. He realizes that he couldn't destroy the Ring and he forgives Gollum. When Gollum dances he topples into the fire himself which shows Tolkien's Biblical idea that God even works to turn bad to good. I understand the temptation to make it a more suspenseful seen but Peter said repeatedly that they were not interested in putting their own ideas in and that they wanted to honor Tolkien's ideas. For the most part I would say they accomplish this very well but this is such an important moment that it seems weird that they would drop the ball here. Thank you for doing these reactions Colette you're very fun to watch. Do you think you could do The Hobbit films in the future?

Frodo never fully healed from his wounds, which means he could never stay happy in Middle-Earth. He, Gandalf, Bilbo, and the rest are going to the undying lands (Elf heaven essentially), where mortal beings usually aren't allowed. An exception is made for Frodo and Bilbo because they were ring bearers. In the appendices we learn that Sam becomes mayor of the Shire and lives a long and happy life. After his wife dies, he also sails west to the undying lands because he was briefly a ring bearer. So Frodo and Sam do meet again. Merry and Pippin spend their days with Aragorn in Gondor, and when they die they are buried next to Aragorn's grave. Legolas and Gimli remain friends, and their friendship heals the rift between Dwarf and Elf. When they reach their end, they also sail to the undying lands together. It's a massive honor for Gimli, being a dwarf, and never a ring bearer. Once they leave, the fellowship is gone from Middle Earth forever.

Greetings from Poland. Tolkien has been the greatest fantasy writer and one of the greatest in history for well over half a century, and nothing will change that, whose work has had a huge impact on the work of other writers, creators of films, games, etc. George Lucas wouldn't have made Star Wars (and certainly not this version) if it weren't for Tolkien. J.K. Rowling wouldn't have written Harry Potter if she hadn't read Tolkien first. It's obvious who she had in mind when creating the character of Dumbledore and the Dementors. George R.R. Martin wouldn't have written Game of Thrones without having first read Tolkien. In one of his interviews, he once told how he came up with the idea of killing the characters of his books. When he read The Lord of the Rings for the first time and came to the scene where Gandalf dies with the Balrog by falling off a bridge Khazad Dum was in total shock because he didn't think Tolkien would dare to kill such an important character. Later, when writing Game of Thrones, he said that since Tolkien had no qualms about killing off characters, he wouldn't have any problems either. One of Tolkien's greatest advantages as a writer, apart from creating the most "real" fantasy world in the history of literature, is writing in such a way as to leave as much room for the reader's imagination as possible. That's why adapting the book to the screen was so difficult, because the filmmakers had to meet the imagination of millions of readers in order to accurately represent this world. But Peter Jackson did the impossible. He made a faithful adaptation, which is considered a model. The three parts of the trilogy won a total of 17 Oscars and many other awards. But it doesn't change the fact that the book is better. But The Lord of the Rings, although an iconic book, is not Tolkien's best book. In my opinion (but I suspect that also of many other fans of the Professor's work) it is The Silmarillion. Tolkien divided the history of his imaginary world into three eras. The action of The Lord of the Rings takes place in the third era. The Silmarillion describes the first two eras, starting from the creation of the world (Arda, of which Middle-earth is a part). Silmarillion is not only the best fantasy book, but the greatest story ever created by man.

At 35:23, how much did Galadriel know about the future, and Frodo's part in it? It's an interesting question, and one that doesn't have a clear answer, in my opinion. In the book, Elrond gives Frodo and the Company some advice as they are about to set out: "I can see very little of your road; and how your task is to be achieved, I do not know. The Shadow has crept now to the feet of the Mountains...and under the Shadow all is dark to me." Galadriel says something similar to Gimli when she gives him the gift of her hair (the scene may not be in the Extended version of the movie): "I do not foretell, for all foretelling is now vain: on the one hand lies darkness, and on the other only hope." Aragorn has a measure of foretelling himself, as did his mother Gilraen. In debating whether to enter the mines of Moria, he tells Gandalf, "It is not of the Ring, nor of us others that I am thinking about now, but of you, Gandalf. And I say to you: if you pass the doors of Moria, beware!" Even the ultimate end of the Ring itself hinges on a twist of fate. No spoilers, and the scene is different in the movie, anyway. At any rate, Fate plays an important role in the affairs of Middle-earth, both in the book and the movie.

At 46:43, in the book the Nazgul's full words were, "Come not between the Nazgul and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shriveled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."

Sméagol's appearance is largely changed by the passage of 500 years, living under a mountain. People who've only seen the film won't know how he fed himself when he was hunting for Bilbo (babies disappeared from their cradles in the dead of night... which shouldn't be a surprise because he was planning to eat Bilbo when they met in his cave) In the book after the Ring is destroyed Frodo tells Sam they should forgive Gollum because without him the quest would have failed. The Ring's power was too. strong for *anyone* to resist forever, and it was particularly strong at the place where it was made. Frodo just had to get it to where Providence could take care of the rest, which was only enabled by Bilbo sparing Gollum years before..

The appearance of Gollum is obvious: a normal body lasts 100 years, to name a number, while Gollum lived for centuries because of the Ring. His body is artificially sustained, and the transformation is simply a long-term effect. Gollum was already a madman, a thief, and a scoundrel before the Ring. For him, the Ring was merely the tip of the iceberg.

The books did a better job of explaining why Frodo had to leave. In his diary he was writing that he felt like Bilbo did, too little butter stretched over too much bread because the ring had ultimately left its mark on him. A huge reason was explained in the movie by Gandalf when he was talking to Elrond after Frodo had been stabbed by a Morgul blade. He said it will never truly heal and that got worse as the years went on. He was part of the history of that age and went West to the undying lands with Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel. The film didn't really explain it, but Gandalf is the equivalent of an archangel. A spiritual being sent to middle Earth to be the enemy of Sauron. He's a being known as a Maiar and had been in middle Earth in an earlier age as a younger incarnation.

Frodo and Bilbo were granted the honor of living for eternity for their deeds against Sauron, and by proxy, Sauron's master, Morgoth. Frodo also was living in pain. Due to his multiple stab wounds.. the biggest one was the black magic dagger that stabbed him in the first movie. Going to "the heavens" was so he could live pain-free. The elves and wizards were basically sent to Middle-Earth to stop Sauron from executing Morgoth's plan. With Sauron defeated, and therefore Morgoth's schemes in middle-earth thwarted.. the Valar called all of their angels/immortals(wizards/elves) back to the heavens.. and as i said above, recognized Frodo and Bilbo for their resistance against pure evil and granted them passage to the undying lands. It's sad and beautiful at the same time

They don't live eternally, the "Undying Lands" doesn't mean people living there don't die. They don't even make it there anyway, normal people can't live in Valinor because they would get burned out and die within a few months. Rather they live on Tol Eressea which is an island off the shore of Valinor, but their lifespan is not extended in any way.

At 19:00, you're right--who is going to spend his time freezing his butt off waiting for a signal that might never come, or be obscured by clouds if it does come? It's wonderful cinema but totally impractical. Tolkien's version is much more practical. Instead of being on the tops of the highest mountains, in the book the beacons were placed on lower foothills along the road between Edoras and Minas Tirith, where the men manning the posting stations along the road could also service the beacons, and light them if needed. A similar line of beacons ran along the southern side of the White Mountains to transmit signals to the southern fiefs.
