Girls, this is your best reaction yet. I love the way you took this movie seriously and discussed its themes, tracing the lessons that each character learned and how each character contributed to the story. In 2013 they made a movie about Walt Disney and his efforts to persuade P.L. Travers, the woman who wrote the book Mary Poppins, to let him make a movie of the story. She was reluctant, and they had many meetings. Tom Hanks played Walt Disney and Emma Thompson played the writer. The title of the movie - "Saving Mr. Banks" - is a clue to the real meaning of the movie you just watched, "Mary Poppins." Mary's real contribution to the Banks family was that she healed Mr. Banks and allowed him to have a loving relationship with his own children. She cured him of grownup-itis. Watching "Saving Mr. Banks" made me love "Mary Poppins" even more. You have loved this film, so you should really watch the movie about how it was made. It is wonderful.

Mr Banks is not nasty, he’s just typical of a man at the time from a well to do family. Families like that had Nannies for their children while the parents were at their jobs. There was a movie about Walt Disney meeting the author of Poppins about making the film a few years ago called ‘Saving Mr Banks’ in which it implied that Mary was not there to look after the children but to save Mr Banks from his stale life and find his inner child. It’s also indicated that Mary used to be a nanny figure for Bert ( Mary doesn’t seem to age) but other sources want to claim there’s a friendship/romance there. ‘Tuppence a bag’ is saying a little kindness goes a long way, not huge gestures. Tuppence was 2 pennies at the time of this film setting (1910) so not a lot of money.

Another thing a lot of people miss is that BOTH the Mr and Mrs Banks are not good parents. Mr Banks is firm and unyielding and strict beyond all means, and Mrs Banks is completely absent from their lives, self absorbed in her own world. That's why at the end when Mrs Banks adds her sash to the kite, it signals that she is joining the family properly along with her husband.
@CheepchipsableКүн бұрын
@@sniperdubey They are caricatures of an upper middle class. They employ nannies and other servants to care for the household. To maintain that lifestyle Mr Banks at least needs to be serious. Not uncommon for them to be absent to some degree. I wouldn't say they were bad, they were mostly doing what they thought was right for their kids, and probably better than was done for them. Mr Banks probably went to boarding school for many years of his childhood, and Mrs Banks was fighting for womens right to vote.
@NoelleMar21 сағат бұрын
Well, it’s true that he is redeemable, but being “normal” for a man of that class and time in no way means he isn’t nasty. Being nasty in many ways is often very normal. People do many awful things because that’s what’s expected of them. (Worse things than Banks does lol.)

I don't know if any of you ladies ever noticed, but the actor for the elder Mr. Dawes (the old man) is the same actor who played Bert! He would play pranks on people taking tours around the studio by taking forever to cross a street while in makeup and then sprint stride by stride with their bus immediately afterward.

This movie and the story around how it came to be is a wonderful example of how joy and tragedy can mix to make something beautiful. P.L. Travers, the lady who wrote the book on which this movie is based, had a very difficult childhood and never had the relationship with her father that she wanted, and apparently wrote the Mary Poppins books partly as a way of imagining how her own father could have been healed in the way that she wrote Mr. Banks to be healed. The result of the negative emotions she carried because of her upbringing was this amazing, wholesome, and uplifting movie that audiences loved but that Mrs. Travers herself unfortunately quite disliked because she thought it changed too much from her books. The movie was nevertheless a huge success for Disney and was one of the things that helped establish Julie Andrews in the industry, along with her role as Maria in The Sound of Music. But then, only a few years after this movie came out, Mr. Disney died of lung cancer. Then in 1977, the little boy who played Michael Banks (whose name was Matthew Garber) died of pancreatitis at just 21 years old. I still think this movie is one of the best that Disney has produced in their entire 100 year history, as much for the story of how and why it got made as much for the quality of its execution.

I saw this many years ago, when i was a small child. It delighted me then, and I still love it to this day. What a wonderful, magical movie. 💫 Oh, and you're not far off when you say Mary Poppins is a bit like Santa Claus. She comes from the same cultural milieu that produced the Tuatha de Danaan and other lords and ladies of the hollow hills, deep forests and wild places. So, I always think of Mary as a fae lady who brings power and joy, but who must live according to the rules of Faerie. 🧚♀ As for Bert, he's another character with mythological meaning -- he was called the "Match Man" in the original story. He only *mostly* lives in every-day reality, but also slightly within the Faerie Veil and can cross between the two. Bert brings fire, and is therefore a symbol of transformation -- for either destruction or (as in this film) creation. He heralds the coming of Mary Poppins, who will transform the lives of the family. Of course, it might not mean any of those things -- it might just be a fun movie for kids, in the same way that Studio Ghibli films are just fun cartoons with no inspiration *whatsoever* from ancient East Asian myths and legends, right? SOO-per-calla-frajill-listic-expee-alla-DOE-shus. 😁

@AddieKirt I... I know, that's why I said he was in his 90s. Because he was, you know, in his 90s. I don't know what you people are "arguing" about.

You lovely ladies, should watch the Original "Parent Trap". Another Delightful older Disney "Family" Movie. Its fun, funny, and charming. Dick Van Dyke, is a very Charismatic and Funny man. He had his own TV Show, for many years. Hella is always making some of the most Profound Insights... The comment about the Kite, was 100% Spot On

Two other similar films to this would be Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Bedknobs and Broomsticks is another Disney film with a mixture of live action and animation. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is set in a similar era (1920s) and the leading lady is very similar to Julie Andrews, whilst the leading man is Dick Van Dyke again. Both films are musicals and David Tomlinson appears in Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

This is one of the best musicals ever made! And it’s amazing that you didn’t clue in to the fact that Mary Poppins and Maria from the Sound of Music are played by the same actress Julie Andrews! Bert is played by Dick van Dyke who is still around at the age of 99! He also plays the super old president of the bank and the kids had no idea! They were terrified he was going to die on the spot! Actually Julie Andrews was filming the Sound of Music when she won the Oscar for this movie! She would sing the songs to the children who had no idea they were from this movie and thought she’d just made them up! 😂 If you liked this, you should watch Saving Mr Banks which is about making this movie! The author of the Mary Poppins books HATED this movie!

Julie Andrew’s was a legend. Two other absolute legends I think you will enjoy very much are Katharine Hepburn and Audrey Hepburn. They were not related, but by coincidence had the same surname.) Katharine Hepburn had a career that lasted more than 50 years and is still the person who has won the most Best Actress awards at the Oscars (and her first Best Actress Oscar was 48 years earlier than her last one!). She was named the greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema by the American Film Institute. Two of her greatest films were “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” (1968) and “The African Queen” (1952). Both won and were nominated for many awards. Despite her fame, she refused to be a typical Hollywood celebrity, choosing to live a more normal life and using her fame to promote women’s liberation. Audrey Hepburn was a British actress who was an “EGOT”-an acronym short for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony-basically the “grand slam” of American show business, winning all 4 types of major awards. Only about 20 people in history have ever done this. I especially recommend the films “Sabrina” (1954) and “My Fair Lady” (1964). Audrey Hepburn was also not a typical Hollywood celebrity. She started her career as a ballet dancer in The Netherlands during World War Two and performed ballet to raise money to support the Dutch resistance against the Nazis. Later in life, she devoted herself to humanitarian causes throughout the world as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.

This and the Wizard of Oz are immortal classics that will likely never die. They are from a golden age where family movies were very wholesome. Disney really should watch some of their old movies and regain their way.

Yes, this was at the time the most advanced-the scene where the live actors are in the animation hadn’t been done before in a feature film, and it blew everyone’s mind.

I saw this movie when it was first released. I liked it so much that I would go to my neighbor's house to listen to the movie soundtrack album. I did that several times. For its time, this movie was an advanced technical achievement with the animation and special effects.

Grew up with this movie as a kid and another one I loved that has some similar themes and also the same actor who played the father (David Tomlinson) is Bedknobs and Broomsticks. I'd love to see you do a reaction to that one as well. Back to Mary Poppins though, the actor who played Bert AND the head of the bank, Dick Van Dyke, just turned 99 years old and he can still dance around today. Fun fact he was completely self taught for acting, singing and dancing.

The song "Feed the Birds" was one of Walt Disney's favorite songs. So much so, that he had a piano in his office and the Sherman brothers would play it for him whenever he needed to hear it.

Actually you are mistaken. Two of Walt Disney’s movies Song Of The South as well as So Dear To My Heart combined live action and animation were released in the 1940s sometime after World War Two although I’m not certain of which one was released first. Even before Walt Disney had created Mickey Mouse or even Oswald the Lucky Rabbit he was making shorts that combined live action with animation. His Alice series put a live person into an animated setting during the days of silent movies. Another studio (I forgot which one) did the reverse and put an animated character in the real world.
@oliverbrownlow5615Күн бұрын
@@krazycatz SONG OF THE SOUTH was released in 1946, and SO DEAR TO MY HEART was released in 1948. Before either of those, however, the MGM musical ANCHORS AWEIGH (1945) featured a sequence in which live actor Gene Kelly danced with the animated mouse Jerry (of "Tom and Jerry").

When Mr. Banks was being fired, the incident mentioned with the tea in Boston was what us Americans call the Boston Tea Party. At that time, America was a colony of England. American patriots were protesting the Tea Act of May 10, 1773, which allowed the East India Company to sell tea from China in American colonies without paying taxes apart from those imposed by the Townshend Acts. American Patriots objected to England imposing taxation without representation on them. The Sons of Liberty, an American resistance group, strongly opposed the taxes in the Townshend Act as a violation of their rights. In response, the Sons of Liberty, some disguised as Indians, destroyed an entire shipment of tea sent by the East India Company. This was a major event that led to the American Revolution.

You should definitely now watch the movie "Saving Mister Banks"! It's the dramatized story of how Mr. Disney himself pursued author P.L. Travers for the rights to her book to make the Mary Poppins movie. It's a very moving watch for sure!
