It's a great trilogy, with each part increasing the drama, battles, character development, spectacular locations. Very satisfying and has held up well for the past 20 years.

Elrond was afraid to touch the ring for the same reasons Gandalf was afraid to touch the ring. Aside from that, he and Isildur were distantly related through Elrond's twin brother, who chose a mortal life hundreds of years prior to the events in the film (I know all this because I've read J.R.R. Tolkien's book "The Silmarillion" with all the tales and backstories of these characters).

Enjoyed watching the movie with you! When Gandalf was at a loss in Moria ("I have no memory of this place"), it was because (1) it had been many years since he had been in Moria, and (2) his previous trip had been in the other direction: east to west. In the book, Gandalf explains, "If you wish to know, I will tell you that these doors open outwards. From the inside you may thrust them open with your hands. From the outside nothing will move them save the spell of command. They cannot be forced inwards." The Watcher in the Water apparently was relatively new since Gandalf's previous trip. Presumably, in the attack that destroyed Balin and his Dwarf company, the stream was dammed, producing the lake, and the WITW was somehow introduced; Tolkien doesn't elaborate. According to the chronology in the Appendix, the Dwarves had been dead about 25 years. Gollum had apparently been trying to go west through Moria in search of the Shire but was stymied by the WITW. Lots of lore the movie makers had to omit to make a good movie!

Gimli had never been to Moria before. He was a relative of Balin, whom you will remember from the Hobbit films (along with Ori, who was holding the book that Gandalf read from.)

Kia ora, new KZbin sub and long time LOTR fan from New Zealand. Great reaction, it’s obvious that you’ve read or seen the Hobbit. Your Patreon members have probably explained why Elrond couldn’t kill Isildur, when he decides to keep the ring. Also, Aragorn is a descendant, not Isildur’s son. If you want to know more about Boromir’s backstory, it would pay to view the extended version of Two Towers. Ma te wa (until your next LOTR reaction)

Ayy shout-out New Zealand! Definitely on my travel list with how beautiful it’s portrayed in the movies🙌🏾 and I’ve watched the hobbit movies before. I’ve had a few people vaguely explain why he couldn’t kill isildur but I definitely will watch the extended versions for the next to movies to get all the info. Seems like there’s a lot that’s said and I’m always down for more from these movies😂

NZ has a sub tropical temperate climate/environment “Land of the long white cloud” (Aotearoa). NZ is also compact, it’s perfect for the outdoor type. In one day, you can easily go Skiing at first light, Bungee jumping, white water rafting, jet boating and surfing on the West Coast as the sun goes down OR, you could spend a day at Hobbiton, eating food and drinking ale at the “Green Dragon” Inn + an overnight BnB option. NZ is widely regarded as a western democratically run society that is empathetic towards the survival of the indigenous language and culture. There are definitely pros and cons, so travel safely if you decide to visit us one day, noho ora mai (take care)

Read the books (including the Silmarillion) ... and a lot of the questions you asked will be answered (not everything is explained in the movies). The Silmarillion is also basic knowledge requirement to know why Amazon's stupid series is stupid (it is completely non-Tolkien).
