It completely rapes Tolkiens lore and world building. It’s a corporate husk that has latched on to an immensely popular IP and bastardised it with standard fantasy tropes, changing of established characters and essentially belittling the source material and in extension fans of said source material. It’s objectively a selfish, greedy, simply bad TV show.

@@mattcaveat43 Did you watch? It's much more than the stereotypical fantasy show. Yes, there are common tropes, but what do you expect from lore that is the ORIGIN of those tropes? The characters are well rounded enough for them to feel like real people instead of plaster casts, and they create a good kind of tension between this version and the version we've come to know. The season as a whole to holds up really well as a narrative. It's balanced and teases just about enough about what's to come while taking the time to establish the settings and the main characters during this season. Remember that the first season is a starting point, not the definitive version of the characters. Rings of Power might not be the adaptation that you expected or wanted to see, and that's fine, and you don't have to like that. But it is (objectively!) NOT a 'bad show'.

Race issues aside, I thought his Elvishness was spot on. He came across as aloof and stoic without being self righteous where Legolas is mischievous free spirited, and Elrond and the other High elves were just too bourgeois, as I'm pretty sure they were meant to be. And I think he portrays the conflict Arondir is sure to be feeling, loving a human, physically trying to distance himself but being drawn to her again and again, quite well including in his body language. So race aside, he suits the role very well.

Nothing of this is superlative. Its not Tolkien. Its nothing totally original. Yesthere are some nice pictures but storytelling and dialogues are underearthly. Some story lines like the haarfoots are so disgusting that some fans watch only the episodes without ot go to the toilet during haarfoot playtime. Numenor is a smitty with a small harbour in front. The Southlands make no sense. How could a whole watchtower of Elves not see the giant destruction the Orks caused when they dug their trenches. Arondir and Bronwyn have zero chemistry. And last not least whag Amazon did to the Noldor os a crime. This is not even fan fiction its destroyfiction. Nasty nasty Hobbitses

Still needs to be said: For those of you who only know the movies and are wondering why any of this outcry matters, Tolkien didn’t set out to write just another fantasy, his first love was language and mythology. As a linguist, he set out to make the most beautiful language ever created (Elvish.) He invented Elvish based on Northern European languages. As a historian, he wrote the Silmarillion and all the other extensive back lore that is only hinted at in the movies as alternate mythology for the British Isles. The very creation of Middle Earth by the gods through an act of song was informed by Finnish myths. He was steeped in Northern and Western European culture and the myths, legends, languages, stories, racial characteristics, history, and cultures of Middle Earth are inextricably built from corresponding roots of European culture in a way that no fantasy has ever been able to replicate before or since. He is considered by many of us to be the true father of modern fantasy and no one-bar none-has equaled the depth and verisimilitude he brought to that creation. This trailer and all Amazon interviews to date prove that they don’t care about any of this and intend to dismantle the very foundation of why Tolkien wrote these books as a labor of love in the first place. He loved his culture, his history, and his language and his invented languages, world, races, and stories were the medium through which he communicated his love of his ancestral heritage. To change his work in the ways shown in this trailer and subsequent interviews is not just to reinterpret some surface aspect of his stories, it is to completely undermine his stated intent, strike at the heart of his passion, and directly attack his own cultural heritage.

That post was originally written before the show came out, wasn't it? At the time the trailers first came out it seemed like they were going in a very different direction than they did, but it turned out just to be bad marketing. I almost didn't watch it because of the focus on changing the lore in the marketing but I'm glad I did because the show surprisingly pays tribute to the lore really well and the interviews I've seen post-release have shown the cast really care about the characters and many of them have gotten up to speed on the lore.
