The majority of the world has no trouble seeing the value of food. Trust me. "Us" in Tolkien's quote are those few (yes few, on global scale) who live in abundance.
@kalle3879
@kalle3879 4 жыл бұрын
@@fabiennecoenders I know that and Tolkien also knew that. The substance of the quote is what you just wrote. It says "*more* of us". And you're right, the "us" addresses people who don't have to worry about such things but that is the essence of the quote. See, this quote is from the 1930s. At that time (and still today) there weren't many people who did not live in abundance who were able to read his work. So naturally, his books address to those people who were blessed with food, etc.

Its remarkable when you realize that the Shire is JRR's innocence, its his early boyhood wonderment at nature, country life, peace and bliss, that Frodo is very much himself, that the trip to Mordor and back that forever changed him was his experience in the first world war, and from that he wrought an astonishing tale that to this day inspires, captivates and enchants so many fans.

Thank you for sharing this. I watched the movies for the very first time a few days ago (I haven't read the books yet) and even though I don't know anything about the author, the story made me think of WWI. I'm looking forward to learn more, now I know why there are so many dedicated fans.
@joy1696
@joy1696 Жыл бұрын
@@user-is7xs1mr9y piece of insight for you since you have not yet read the books. J.R.R. Tolkien wrote the hobbit as a fantasy book. It was never meant to be dark story based on WWI. It was simply about a hobbit going on an adventure. The movies twisted much of what happens in the books and left out a lot as well. It was much later when J.R.R. Tolkien wrote the lord of the rings centered around the events of WW2. I hope this doesn’t come across as blunt. When you have a family member who’s a die hard fan and knows the truths of this fandom, you tend to fall into it too. ^_^;;

“Frodo: I can’t do this, Sam. Sam: I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something. Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam? Sam: That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for.”

Imagine waking up one morning, in a big soft bed, covered by fresh smelling sheets and blankets, the fire in the fireplace slowly roaring and crackling, the cool autumn breeze coming in from the open window and on the kitchen table, hot bread fresh from the oven, with butter and jam waiting for you to begin your day with. You pull up a chair and you sit next to that open window, letting the cool breeze wake you up while you peacefully enjoy your breakfast and listen to the birds chirp..

It is a shadow of an even more beautiful reality, my friend. Tolkien invented this beautiful world, especially in its revision, to mirror the Christian walk and faith. Jesus demonstrates sacrifice and humility, being willing to bear what we suffer from (our sins and lusts of the flesh, represented by the Ring), as he dies upon the cross. I have personally been transformed by this love, and I have not yet come across another like it, and I am quite confident that I never will. He is God, He is Lord, yet He exemplified perfect humility to reconcile us to a right relationship with our Heavenly Father. By His wounds, my transgressions and iniquities are paid for. By His chastisement, I have peace. By His stripes, I am healed. It is my prayer that you would see your deep need for the love of Christ, and return to Him. He exalts us in dying for us; He humbles us in our submission to Him. It is a beautiful reality, and one I am sure I will never quite understand the depth of.

The calming Shire exists is in all of our hearts if we just take note, its the golden morning sunshine streaming through a kitchen window or the gentle breeze whispering through the tree tops, its whispy clouds passing in front of a winter moon or the stars appearing after a storm, it's friends and neighbors gathering around a glowing bonfire or sharing the bounty of a well-tended garden, it is all the heart-warming moments our good earth provides and it surrounds us all right here right now if we can choose to see it.

Later when i was older we secretly watched the movies together when my parents weren't home because i was maybe a little young to see al the Orks. Now my brother lives on his own with his wife and two daughters (quite a buzzy life he has) and i'm buzzy with my study. I keep the books next to my bed and every night i can't sleep or when i just miss him i read a little with the music playing and i feel like i'm back in my brothers arms. Hi Matthew, "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" by David Burns (and actually putting his techniques into practice) was a life-changer for me. It's easy & kind of fun, but you still have to work at it. :) Oh, and becoming Catholic made any lingering depression disappear in a puff of smoke! Hope this is helpful to you. God bless you and yours.

Frodo : I can't do this, Sam. Sam : I know. It's all wrong By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened. But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something. Frodo : What are we holding on to, Sam? Sam : That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.

Where people care more about food, and people and enjoying life together. Listening to this music makes me feel happy. As if i'm walking in the shire with all of you fine people. @@alpacamaster5992 Each character was the hero of the own individual story. I hate when people forget the efforts Frodo went through. The ring is a very corrupting object and the fact that Frodo got to Mount Doom still with the intent to destroy it means he too has a huge heart and will of good. Frodo not throwing the ring away shows that evil denies moral capabilities. Frodo really only gets on the same wavelength of the rest at the very very end when he comes to grasp with the meaningful task. Frodo saying "I'm glad to be with you here Samwise Gamgee, here at the end of all things" shows true friendship and love. I hate that he's cast aside as an asshole in all light of Sam. Every character had their hardships and heroic moments.

There is something about this soundtrack that reminds one of home. A warm fire, with bread baking in the oven and birdsong outside your window. The way plants look outside in the springtime after a fresh rain, when the sun hits them. I grew up on these movies, and am happily surprised that my 1.5 year old turns his head towards the tv when I play the movies and he recognizes the music. His hands resting on top of each other as he soaks in the magic that these films bring alive in your own home. The ability to bring comfort with a simple song may be the best joy of all. To listen and be transported to a place that you know isn’t real, but feels real. I know one day he will be like my friends and me, running barefoot in the grass, pretending we were also little hobbits on our own grand journey.

Absolutely beautiful. I cant be the only one who tried holding back the tears. From a child reading the books and emerging himself in a world that was as real as the physical one to a teen watching the movies never imagining that would ever be a possibility to an adult still very much immersed in tolkeins universe. Thank you J R. R.Tolkien.

Frodo: I can't do this Sam Sam: I know, it's all wrong, by rights we shouldn't even be here. It is like the great stories mr Frodo, the ones that really mattered,full of darkness and danger they where and sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy if so much bad had happened. but it is a pssing thing, this shadow, even darkness must pass, and when the day comes, it will shine out the clearer. those where the stories that stayed with you, that meant something. even if you where to small to understand why. but i think mr Frodo, I do understand, I know now. folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didnt, because the where holding on to something. Frodo: what are we holding onto Sam? Sam: that there is some good in this world mr Frodo, and it's worth fighting for

The Shire exists!! I visited Wales and England, deep into the back country, down country lanes, in the valleys, off the beaten path away from motorways the shire is there. there are pubs without TVs, Music or Games, just conversation and ale, there are small farms with happy sheep prancing next to a small stream, oh the shire is still very much alive if you know where to go.

And then you see it: white shores and beyond a far green county under a swift sunrise. Frodo: I wish this need not have happened in my time. Gandalf: So do I and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time given us.
