So from what I read, Lord Randall, and all humans, were forbidden to enter The Greenwood. That was the realm reserved to the fairies and other fey creatures. For trespassing, a fairy assumed the form of Lord Randall's lover and poisoned him.

Does anyone know what they said that Lord Randal "left his sisters"?
@carolweiner20332 жыл бұрын
One version said his gold and silver, but that version he doesn’t leave anything to his father...I cannot understand what he left his sister in this version I have heard so many versions as it is a ballad the words tend to change.

@@carolweiner2033 Bob Dylan took old folk songs and either sang them verbatim, or in this case used them as a template for original work.

The structure of the lyrics of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" clearly used this song as an inspiriation. Musically, there is no relationship that I can hear.

I can't believe it! Dylan ripped off the world's best song!
@robertnewell50576 жыл бұрын
Not sure this is the world's BEST song, but Dylan certainly ripped off the vocal riff and part of one version of the tune. Dylan has loads of great ripoffs: Bob Dylan's Dream (Lord Franklyn), Masters of War (Nottamun Town), Ballad in Plain D (I loved a lass) and so on right up to Scarlet Town (Barbara Allen). That's folk music for you, and he always add something both unique and yet related to the original. So in BDD the ship becomes a train, emblematic of the expansion of the US in the same way the ship was for the expansion of the UK, and instead of going home (to friends and family), it's going to the West (away from them). Christopher Ricks describes thsi sort of thing much better than I ever could (and at great length) and has loads of lectures on KZbin. In fact, I think I'll listen to one right now.
@6jackace6 жыл бұрын
To be fair he didn't just rip it off, he definitely took the vocal riff from it, but let's face it Dylan's hard rain, is far superior to lord Randall in melody and lyrics
@danari40675 жыл бұрын
Its not a rip off to sing a ballad? Or use parts of a ballad? That's just carrying on its oral tradition.
@alexandrac95364 жыл бұрын
it's not ripping off, it's honoring a tradition. and no one owns the rights to an anon ballad anyway
@monsieurbreakyourpc3 жыл бұрын
Yup. Look up Henry my son by world music lol. Hardly anything dylan wrote was ever original.
