The way I understand is that there will be more density of mobs but right now lightning and some skills go nuts when you have a screen full of mobs and it crashes the game. So until they get it optimized they can have limited numbers of mobs. Also I understand the story is less than a fifth of what they have cooked up and planning on. So full release may have a lot of content. My biggest gripe is a level 12 weapon is worse than a level 5 weapon sometimes. Seems all numbers are just place holders for now I guess. Nice review and nice to see you’re views are comparing to diablo or poe but not fully condemning it against them. Just hope this doesn’t turn into a star citizen stuck in endless alpha and forgotten about

Interesting, so maybe it's not as optimized as it feels since they're really cutting back density. I also noticed that about the weapons. I had a few level 18 weapons that had much more damage than level 20 legendaries. And totally right, not condemning this game, just hopeful for vast improvements.

Have been playing Wolcen for a couple of months now. They have a very interactive forum where the developers communicate back and forth with the community regarding any bug fixes, bug reporting, things you'd like to see made better, added or changed. They also have a Discord channel which (I believe) is manned by one of the developers so that issues can be reported in real-time, as well as communicating likes, dislikes, etc directly. And yes, they do listen and take most things discussed into consideration and, a lot of times, are implemented. Player feedback is super important if this game is to be bigger, better, stronger, faster. From their latest posts it seems as if they have added some people to their staff so that they can (hopefully) get this thing rolled out sooner. For the most part they have been operating with only a handful of people, so building this thing has taken a lot of time and financial resources. Their goals for 2018 look to be a big challenge for them, but if they succeed, will definitely have a bigger and better impact on the game. I'm looking forward to it.

It's worrisome that Wolcen's progress is so slow. It's been in early access almost 18 months. It's a snail's pace. It begs the question of whether it will ever even leave "Early Access". They've only managed to put out about 20% of the content they're shooting for. At this pace it will be 2028 before the game releases >.

hey there fluff. im a long time (sorta) subscriber, first time commenter. my arpg resume is mostly diablo: decade d2, 2 season d3, and recently a couple weeks into poe. im having trouble understanding what you mean by illusion of choice (at around 5:40) and you explain it more (at around 26:00) with an example that you can pick a path, but the choices along the path are finite. im drawn to this topic in particular because i thought the skill tree was one of the more fun things about poe. theres a 3rd party tool called pathofbuilding and i really enjoy theorycrafting the most optimal routes to achieve what im looking for in my build, taking into account my items, skills, combinatjons of things. for example, i could spend extra points to grab a special passive that allows me to affect monsters with +1 curse, or i could use those points instead to increase my survivability and equip unique boots that gives +1 curse and 60% curse aoe. or i could choose both options and get +2 curses with 60% aoe. another example is, i could take a very long path to get the immune to stun special node, but choose a path where there are other useful special nodes along the way, or i could shave off 5-6 points to get the stun immune node as efficiently as possible but alomg the way is mostly junk. but with those 5-6 points i shaved off i could reach in another area of the tree a 50% spell duration wheel, an evasion/armor/resist combo node, and a huge 14% life +30 max life node. or use those 5-6 nodes to reach 3 more jewel nodes if i was able to get spell duration with my gems or items.

the artists did a phenomenal job on this. the environments looks so good, and are really imaginative.... but it seems like the game designers settled on mimicking elements of Diablo 1,2 and 3 and PoE for the most part. But from where it's at right now, it has a very strong foundation that they can build on to make it more interesting. it'll be interesting to see how this game develops

i think the only things one can judge in this game at the moment are the graphics, effects and the art style. everything else is just a placeholder. but from what i played myself this game has huge potential. all my arpg crazed friends see a jewel in the making.

Wolcen is a very ambitious game, developed by a small indie team. It's been in alpha 3 years already, and is showing slow progress over time. If we going to see a finished version, it'll probably arrive in a decade at this pace (I hope I'm wrong). I still bought it on a Steam sale, and it offers a dozen hours of entertainment and a taste of the next generation of ARPG visuals. Definitely has elements of Grim Dawn like the rotating camera and environmental damage, a skill forest like PoE, some elements from Diablo and the traps felt like those in Torchlight II, especially the shooting cannons and blades that come out the floor.

The key word here is potential. Path of Exile started out as pretty much a piece of shit (with potential). It was laggy with desync all over the place. It didn't really have any end game to speak of aside from its map system. PoE over the last few years has become an absolute gem. I feel like if this company is able to do half of the stuff they say they want with Wolcen then it has the potential to be fantastic.

Finally someone who admits that PoE's skill tree is only the illusion of choice. :D I have high hopes for Wolcen. It combines the best things from all great arpg games. Nice visuals and dark atmosphere of Diablo 2. The skill system from Diablo 1 and Dungeon Sieges, the potion system and passive skills of PoE but improved ect. :)

I remember in Dungeon Siege you could start and evolve into anything. If you played enough your character you could have all abilities maxed out (combat+all magic spells etc) and you would be free to choose how to play. If you used a bow your skill would develop same with magic and melee.

Yeah, Dungeon Siege had a great leveling system. Str, Dex, or Int would increase depending on what skills you use to fight, etc. and there were no strict "classes." Great game.

the build diversity in POE comes from way more than just the skill tree. POE has by far the most build diversity available in arpg's, and if that still only counts as "illusion of choice" then shouldn't we say the same is true for all arpg's?

I love all these anti-Diablo folks jumping in. I've played PoE and I'm downloading Wolcen right now to give it a shot. Diablo will be a bigger draw because of the franchise and history. Maybe not forever, but if Diablo 4 is released, I'd bet PoE and Wolcen and any other similar games out there would see a significant drop in active players. If Path of Exile 2 came out, I doubt any Diablo title would see a comparable drop. EDIT: I enjoy PoE and hope Wolcen will be better than PoE and Diablo. Competition in game popularity makes for better games overall.

If PoE 2 comes out there will be massive rage threw out the community unless they have a way to carry over mtx's. a lot of people have spent a lot of money on PoE and I would think that GGG is smart enough not to shit on the majority of the community. At the end of the day GFX will only take a game so far. People will normally choose depth and fun game play over pretty pixels.

Dude traps are weak! i guess your character is weak too, sry for that but they dont really challenge you. ^^ I mean sure if you have a char the runs in slowmotion than it could be somewhat challenging, but who wants to do content with the movement of a snail. :-P

Even the best players in PoE have died to traps in lab from time to time. Sure you can run a slayer and they are negligible and easy to just run through while leeching no problem. Vaal Pact in your build, or any other non-berserker/duelist ascendancy? They hurt. I don't know why you're acting like you're the greatest PoE player in history, but you're definitely not some badass top 10 elite PoE player so just stop with the front. LOL.

after i knew the game and its mechanics i never died to any traps(ofc i do diesometimes with new chars in early stages, but after you have your core that never happens again) so idk whats the point here? you make builds for labs/maps/bosses and/or adapt your build to certain situations. called basic game-knowledge. i fronted no one! you didnt read my whole post! i said that i still die with lowlvl chars in labs, because i havent min/max the new leaguestarters gear. we all die in those stages of the game, but after you have finished your core gear and have everything required you cant die unless you want to. its nearly impossible! :-D

I think that you said it right that its more like grim dawn for now and I think there is quite clear difference between GD and Poe or D3 and that is If you prefer lone adventuring more you go for GD If you like social teaming you may choose PoE. I dont quite like comparing them cos they are all fun to play but in different ways. So all in all if Wolcen will be GD cousin I can take it If not it can be good game anyway.

I tried Wolcen and couldn't get into it and believe me, I wanted to! My main issue was the odd dual colored (purple and orange) attack system thing. You're forced to use certain attacks to gain access to the attacks you actually want to use. In order to use one side of the attack gauge, you have to use the other side that would eventually allow you to use the side you want to use. It's just plain weird.

they are working on this game since 2011... in 2015 start the kickstater with a 2016 release date and nothing is out only a crap early access... there is only the act I finish even that one is not complete...they put out a Beta test phase 1 with only 1 endless dungeon and 6 weapons and skill... this game will be out 1 day before start citizen at the end of time....

grim dawn already killed diablo(3) and poe is a good alternative too but the ui, zoom level and that useless passive skill tree makes the game looks bad. in case of wolcen they need to show us what will they do with unique items. for example you got the hydra on some arena run, it was a legendary item but it looks like just very buffed version of some other rare item. I hope high hopes for wolcen hope it will be really a killer for arpg genre.

I don't see Poe as a diablo "killer". What's sad is that whatever you build, enemies die in the same way. Especially compared to d2 the insane number of items that could potentially be great and useful makes it tiring imho. Let's see whether this will do better....

this game is dead. they said it wont be developed any further . From a recent announcement: "Since the entire actual environment, armors, and characters will be modified or improved to allow the final version of the game to be implemented, we’ve decided to focus our attention on the Beta transition and no longer add content to the actual version of Wolcen. " they will no longer add content when The game seems barely started. as good as this may look. they game is far from being finished. seems to me like they ran with they money from the people that supported them on kickstarted.

Wolcen looks great so far. The only thing i dont like ist the movementspeed. It looks so slow and boring. Nothing compareable to a POE racingmashinechar where u can get a disconnet from the server because you performed too fast.
