Lords of Magic: Special Edition - Air Thief (Rush)

Thief is a very broken class.
Difficulty: Hard
This game is a Mix of TBS and RTS, very similar to lords of the realm 2, but instead of city management, we only control a single lord and his champions/minions, it is necessary to pay for the training of a unit, also an upkeep, so occupying mines and cities will provide resources to help to reach our goal.
Lords of magic was developed by Impressions Games and published by Sierra Entertainment.

Right? The first game I ever won. I was chaos, and the lord of order literally stashed himself a few clicks underneath the earth temple until turn 650. Dude probably just sat in one spot for 200 turns. Acting like Osama Bin Laden out here lol

It doesn't take Air long to beat everyone else, even on max difficulty. I can have 4 or 5 capitol cities under my control in 21 character days or less as air due to their insane mobility and spellcasting ability.

Fairie Thief Lord has always been the most powerful Lord. I figured that out very early on in LoM

flying + ranged is broken, especially since the Fairy Thief has 12 Range when the average for most units is 9

@@GrayMansEndlessIncite There's athird party patch which slightly nerfs ranged units vs cavalry. It weakens all ranged units by 1/3rd vs cavalry, which slightly nerfs the Fairie thief lord. however, this game shipped in terrible condition. 1vs1 and free for all is broken as helll. Air has such a massive maneuverability and mobility advantage that they can conquer Life within 1 week, and conquer both Water and Order within 2 more character weeks, so if you were trying to play some other faction and another human player was playing Air, there is no way to keep up with the way their Fame and macro mushrooms out of control as the conquer other players so quickly. Once you get ahead by a city and a Great Temple fight, your opponent has no chance of ever beating you. i know thief strategies for abusing the AI even on max difficulty which allow you to steal so much gold and other resource theat you can get virtually unlimited macro within a few turns of starting to rob one enemy city.

@@GrayMansEndlessIncite Your overland movement is 28 for the Thef Lord if I remember correctly, which is faster than most heroes' hasted movement speed....before you even apply a haste buff to him. if you h ave a nearby mage use a haste spell on him, he runs even faster than that.

@@GrayMansEndlessIncite By the way, Blizzard Entertainment currently owns the rights to Lords of Magic and any potential sequel to the game. WarCraft 3 is actually partially based on Lords of Magic and has more in common with lords of Magic than WarCraft 2. It would be cool if they made a sequel to this game, if they made 1vs1 and Free for All more fair and playable. Right now, I could curb stomp just about anyone at 1vs1 as either Air or Order. Even though Order is pretty slow starting, if you unlock their spells they are sort of broken in the late game. Anyway, I am currently making a Turn Based Strategy game to be played on table top which has realistic warffare mechanics and a Rogue mechanic which borrows slightly from LoM Thieves.

@@GrayMansEndlessIncite I'm actually working on designing a table top turn based strategy game which is set in the early colonial period. I have a Rogue class which hs cloaking skills to simulate realistic spy warfare in addition to a knight class. The game eventually evolves into musketeers and cannons, but the "Rogue and Knight stay very strong even after cannons hit the battlefield. It's designed to be won in about 20 to 25 turns per player, which should take about 45 minutes to play an average game. Turn based strategy is much more fair than RTS. A player cannot win a turn-based strategy game just because they can hit 400 buttons per minute. To win a turn-based game you actually need to out-think your opponent every single turn of the game.

All thief lords with a bow can do this but the best ones are Life and Air Air you can cheese like this or have masses of Faeries over cliffs and the AI can't get to you so they more or less die Life has elf ranger girl who can shoot pretty much from one side of the map to another so all you have to do is spam stealth button on and off button once she fires, sending her on solo missions so she takes all the XP for herself. Once she gets enough levels you can put her to training elf archers (park her in the barracks and you'll see the XP bar of the archer population go up, I believe you can train up to one level below so if she's level 7 your archers will go up to level 6 once recruited) and when Balkoth appears you have like a whole army of level 6 elf archers and the whole map is covered in arrows to the point Balkoth dies crying

Balance anyone? 😝 Invisibility is ways to OP because there is no cooldown or any restriction of its usage...seems only an enemy thief can be dangerous then.

Thief full potential arise when they are solo, I saw the NPC solo a lot with their thief, Lord included, but they can't really micro. The game manual says the air is the best and fire is worst, no full list/numbers included. i've tried fire they seem to always get detected, it's terrible. Actually there is a cooldown, if you attack them directly while invisible, uncloaking no cooldown is probably a bug.

Ok. Maybe it only occurs from time to time. Like in LotR2 with merchants going over water, sometimes enemy armies(which makes it impossible to win then...).

Must have the game altered in some way. You cant just cloak on and off like that there should be a cool down. Still pretty cool.

I don't think there was a cool down but there was a proximity limit. Got close enough to certain things and you'd be visible and have an indicator to mark that you were detected.

@@cinnamonbeardstud That is dependent upon the amount of stealth the thief has, when it is high enough you can walk right past other units and not be seen.

@@lilchristuten7568 I'm tempted to test this theory. I'm having a hard time finding an official WR speedrun of this game. I used to play this game religiously, back in the day. Today, I tried to look for speedrun records, I couldn't find much in the archives. As far as I can see, this run is the only only non-special edition run I could find. I'll test out this strategy and figure out if it's legit.
