Woah I'm so glad you took up ghosting. No one playsss like a ghost. And I am still waiting for a reward system from ubisoft to leave guards alive like splinter cell. And like you said, it fits perfectly with the assassin fantasy. I can't really ghost odyssey, because you get a lot of xp from stealth streak killing guards. I ghosted most of Mirage, because killing guards really didn't give me anything.

People aren’t gonna like this one but also try to wear NON hooded clothing as much as possible. For the games where that’s not possible, try to wear the most casual looking robes. The hooded robes should only be worn for some assassinations (preferably at night) and ceremonies/meetings in game with the other Assassins.

In Unity I always "role-play" wearing the raider outfit since it's the most inconspicuous looking one out of the bunch, it's plain brown and just makes Arno look like your dime a dozen peasant with the tattered hood (equip the skinner axe or pickaxe for extra immersion). Though since the recent explosion of mods, model swapping Arno with NPC models offers even more option. For AC4, whaler outfit is unbeatable for both style and believability.

Canon-friendly playing I think is among one of the most fun ways to play an AC game. Flashy stealth like Arno, combat-focused approaches like Connor, precision stealth like Altaïr, all of that. And yes, it will indeed make it feel like you’re roleplaying the characters in question. More immersion indeed. And then we have Jacob Frye, all stabby stabby

It's accurate for Altair in the first game even from real life history perspective, just as for anything else. It's also accurate for him and Basim in Baghdad from setting perspective. For everyone it's just game lore shananigans, it makes no sense for everyone else, even for Bayek in hot Egypt (funnily enough, vikings wore cloacks occasionally) in terms of social stealth if you try and think how that went IRL. But hey, we love our hooded guys and these games in the end of the day!

One thing i always try to imagine when being stealthy is looking at it from a birds eye view or a guard’s perspective. Imagine guarding a base and one by one everyone starts to randomly disappear and not knowing whos doing this, this makes u feel even more cool or deadly. And from a birds eye view, you just see a hooded killer silently clearing out guards. I’m glad you made this video, since AC is a such a huge franchise many casuals wouldn’t know the lore behind being an assassin and how you can tackle missions. For us hardcore AC fans, true immersion and FEELING like an assassin is extremely important. So thank you for your content, your content is truly unique and amazing. ❤

Interesting you mentionned TTRPGs, as I created an Assassin one for my friends a few months ago. None of them has any Assassin's Creed knowledge let alone historical one about Assassins, but they are loving it so far and are deeply invested. I made my own lore, using real ismaili history as a foundation and setting it in 1192. The system is taking inspiration from Hitman missions structucture and AC1 investigations of targets, to prioritise expression, immersion and social stealth. Best AC related experience I have ever had.

I love playing AC in the most stealthy and lore accurate way possible. That's why I loved the Merchant and Eunuch tunics in Mirage, I wore them pretty much every time I would make use of social stealth since they blend so well with the environment. In Unity I used to do the same, trying to wear the set that would fit the enviroment the most. For example, wearing the initial Sans Cullotes sets on the Court of Miracles or the military sets in the Robespierre missions with the army men as enemies. Doing stuff like this or wearing the Merchant's Tunic during the grand auction from Mirage really boosts the immersion for me.

Map markers and Animus GPS systems are a video game contrivance we use to get around these worlds, but consider how your ancestor actually found their next mission. Did someone give them detailed instructions like the rafiqs did for Altair? Did they follow the sun and stars to sail there like Edward? Did Eagle Vision light the way like it did for Ezio in Revelations or their connection to a companion animal like the recent protagonists? For this playstyle you'll disable any and all HUD assists for navigation and avoid checking the map as much as possible. You'll have to internalize the map layout, pay attention to context clues, take notes on verbal instructions, or check the database for information on where you're going. You will also get lost a lot. AC1 and Origins-Mirage are the best for this, but Revelations, Black Flag, and Rogue are sort of playable

I think this is a big problem that so many AAA games suffer from: They do not have a clear focus on encouraging the player to play in the most fun way. AC I think has always struggled with this, as it gives you so many tools and lee-way to just fight your way through everything, how it doesn't really make/force the player to use stealth unless restricting them with an instant fail-state (boo!). It really reminds me of Watch Dogs, how vast majority of people probably never saw the cool John Wick takedowns because they just shot everyone from a far and spammed grenades: The game simply never asked you to play in the more fun way. The design was too loose.

The hardest thing about these is deciding "who should I kill?" For example, the intel gathering missions of Mirage feature you breaking into places with just regular guards doing their jobs or just protecting someone's home, so to me it's 10x more difficult doing those than infiltrating a bandit hideout since I don't believe Basim would kill regular guards during his inteligence missions considering that it'd be both morally wrong and it would alert his main targets. Another great example of this is in Origins. Bayek wouldn't kill people just minding their business on an outpost he's about to steal, but if it's a Roman outpost then he would go full reaper mode since he is actively attempting to liberate his people from the empire as seem in The Hidden Ones. Playing this way not only increases your immersion but also keeps the game fresh since you'll never be repeating the same gameplay loop for too long.

For first playthroughs, I tend to do a combination of these. I set 'ghosting' as like my character foundation. Then depending on the narrative and what the character is feeling, I might deviate during some missions. One memorable time was when I was attempting to ghost black flag. I ended up destroying a bunch of ships and probably took out hundreds of enemies after Blackbeard and Mary's death. That was a bad day in the Caribbean lol

The fact that I did all of these playstyles in almost every game just confirms I'm very much of a nerd. Imo, Unity is the best game for the 3rd playstyle, I created my own outfit sets, signature weapons, and lore for a certain character I created. For the 2nd playstyle, I observed each characteristics of the assassins throughout the story. So here are their personalities: Altair (AC1) - Just as said in the video, well calculated and a ghost type of assassin that is primarily focused being a stab and run person. However, I observed Altair is a versatile fighter, he knows what to do when he is detected during a mission and can be very deadly (killed 12 templar knights all alone in the lore.) Ezio (AC2, ACB, AC Revelations) - In cutscenes during assassinating a high ranking target, he engages in a lot of combat and a less fan of stealth, I've also read the AC2 book and Ezio loves to use his melee weapons and disarms opponents to grab their weapon (hidden blade/poison hidden blade with sword, rapier, scimitar, hammer, spear, etc.) Connor (AC3) - Nothing to say here. Just pure brutal combat. Edward (AC4) - Everyone probably knows this, Edward always stalks his targets which is why there's millions of tailing missions, in the end he will engage in combat. Shay (AC Rouge) - When Shay became a templar and obtained lots of tools, he utilized it a lot both in stealth and combat. Alot of people don't play Rouge, but you can do this in Unity, equip Shay's robes and use the grenade launcher weapon. Arno (ACU) - Quick and nimble; synchronized in kills and elegant movements. Arno doesn't engage in combat, when he is detected he will parkour around the rooftops until he loses the sight of his enemies. AC Origins, AC Odyssey, AC Valhalla - I didn't play and not planning to. Basim (AC Mirage) - Arno lite version.

While it would technically fall under 2nd option, AC1 perfect synchronization. The synchronization bar ("health bar") in AC1 acts as a sort of canon filter in a way. If it drops, something non-canon happened. The order to kill the targets especially in the act with 3 targets is important as well (as that act it's easy to do them out of order).

So the way I have always played the Assassin's Creed games is I view the environment around me, make my character blend into it as much as possible, and then tackle the mission with the weapons that will be the most effective. Full stealth missions, I use the hidden blade and the environment to my advantage. Missions that require combat, engage when needed, stealth kills when I can, and try to remain undetected as much as possible. Missions where stealth is a no go, I use guns and swords.

Bustling towns and villages, a cave you've never ever been in before...are you really gonna just sprint in there in real life? Now if you're trying to get away from people, I can understand

I always try to build my playstyle around the first game. Though the increased variety of tools you get in future games is nice, there's nothing quite like being that "blade in the crowd" they emphasized so much in the first game. Whenever I'm forced to go loud, I normally just do it how that given assassin would. So really, I just sort of mix the first two options in a sense. A good assassin knows when to be showy and when to be subtle. We also play without the HUD in this household.

I play through roleplaying as the protagonist but even outside of cutscenes I tend to act like they would and create their own dialogues in my head and have their own moments. For example in Assassins Creed 3 I played as Connor in my head (obviously) but as the story went along he would become more disgruntled and angry and it would change his outfits correspondingly. Until at the very end he would end up with the Red and Black outfit as a completely different man and he would end up with a completely different personality in my head with a new outfit to boot.

I ghost when it feels right. In AC Rev yesterday I helped Sofia retrieve some maps that that she ordered but the ship refused to give them up. I had been fighting everything for guild challenges and den defense. Things were just too bloody in this playthrough, so I decided to ghost this mission because nobody needed to parish over a simple withheld package.

I recently replayed Black Flag with a mod that changes the combat to the style of AC3 and gives the standard soliders muskets. I decided to see could I beat the entire campaign wihout dying and it was incredibly fun, having to fully rely on stealth as I could be easily overwhelmed in combat, having to prioritise every use of an item to ensure I could complete each encounter and having to use parkour to escape large amounts of guards, it was great. As you were saying, playing as an actual Assassin will always be the best way to play the series besides being an unstopable killing machine.

Something I do is try to mimic the novelization of the games. For example in the Black Flag Novel Edward sneaks into the fort in Havana using dancers so that’s how I would sneak in. This method doesn’t work for everything because there are some things you can’t mimic but overall I find it to be a fun challenge that makes me feel more immersed.

I tend to favor dark colors (dark blue, blacks, grays, etc.) and try to stay away from flashy clothing, except during the day when I'm exploring a city and not trying to hide from anyone. One thing I wish all the games had that would, in my opinion, make the games super immersive, is the ability to lift and remove the hood at will. That's one thing I do love about Valhalla - I explore without the hood but right before a stealth segment, I always lift it. I feel like I'm turning into a demon. Like an anti-hero suiting up. I also make it nighttime before a stealth segment whenever possible. Assassins would feel at home in the shadows. Nighttime, dark clothes, the hood = maximum immersion. Like an angel of death.

A cool tip for Mirage, DONT overlook the costumes, in the contract missions or main missions use costumes you think are appropriate, the assassin robes are cool and all but like the real-life assassins, disguise was everything, and from a lore pov it makes hiding in plain sight even cooler.

I have only been recently able to play ac games and decided to 100% all of them by the order they came out (ac1 in 2024 is still incredible) . One thing I have really liked so far in ac1 and 2 was using the collectible as a way to just improve parkour. It was really fun going from flag to flag in ac1 always trying to improve and get faster. Its not really combat related but a nice play style that removes the usual boredom of collectibles and really trains the parkour. Currently on brotherhood.

Any civilians who may have seen the kill: Dead. He is always the most efficient assassin but is mistrusted by the other members because he follows the creed only when it suits him and is mainly there because he likes the other members of the creeed.

I'm replaying all the AC games (now I'm playing Brotherhood) and I think everyday about what should I do to stay in character and follow the lore. With AC2, I played all the secondary missions when they canonically happened, and adopted a different approach for each period of Ezio's life. When he was younger I mainly avoided stealth, as he was still training with the sword at Monteriggioni, so when I had to I "faked" an improvised and imprecise stealth. When Leonardo crafted the second blade and showed the other techniques, I shifted more towards my own realistic stealth. Now Brotherhood is making it easier thanks to the synchronization objectives, which leaves me room to both have fun with improvisation and stay in character with Ezio. By the way, I'm dedicating a lot of time in reflecting and studying each character and the lore in general, so I wanted to ask you what is in your opinion the best play style for Ezio's games, specifically for each game/sequence/fase of his life

I usually go for the more stealth based approach as in the 3rd playstyle, I like to feel like an assassin, when doing a mission, like an assassin should strike from shadows, not always face to face combat, Itry to understand how the character is in the first few missions, then go about in that playstyle, like I am playing unity now, and I try to be fast and stealthy avoiding direct combat, I am not a fan of ghosting as if you see in real life guards were always valid targets, before a high profile assassination, I am also not at all good at ghosting, like I can take out lafreniere without killing more than two guards, I can tail la touche without killing more than one guard but that's about it, in my opinion some guards have to be removed, as they pose too much hindrance

A good game for ghosting is AC1 I usually play like my interpretation of the mentality of the character, for example I play Altair at first killing a lot of guard if they see me on the rooftop, I usually don't let witness alive, while towards the end of the game I try to ghost as much as I can With Bayek I usually play at first less stealth, maybe using a lot the bow, like a soldier or a warrior, but toward the end I try to use only stealth, only the hidden blade etc Sometimes I try to invent my own story, maybe the character is thinking something and i take very natural and logical choices, I don't try to do impossible things or fantasy action (only with Arno and Connor and sometimes Basim I try to play in a spectacular way), with Basim I usually play very sneaky, very stealth, but at First I try to not kill people, but coherently with the plot I begin to kill more soldiers, less mercy, using a lot of stealth and tricks.

I actually applied this kind of immersion into free roam as well applying my own ideology as well. I was playing brotherhood and brotherhood has a feature where if you're wandering around, once in a great while you get attacked by bandits who try to rob you. And in these scenarios, I never killed a single bandit, I only knocked them out with hand to hand combat. And I did this because they are not my enemy, they're victims of capitalism, victims of a coercive hierarchy which the templars have put themselves at the top of. They live under a system where resources are distributed unequally, those with more wealth get more than those with less. They're stealing from me because they have no choice, and they've been doing it for so long it's almost becomes second nature to them. This is where my ideology comes in. I'm an anarchist myself, meaning that I'm opposed to coercive hierarchies as well as hierarchal power structures that can only sustain themselves through domination and force, and more in favor of horizontal self organization. But it's also tied with the tenants of the brotherhood, especially "stay your blade from the flesh of the innocent". There are a lot of ways to interpret this tenant. One way that I do is as follows: Don't kill anyone that isn't perpetuating systemic oppression of the masses. Of course that's not the only way I interpret it, but nevertheless, The bandits are not part of that oppression, they're a result of it. The true perpetrators are the guards, the governing bodies and the templars controlling those governing bodies from the shadows, they are my enemies which means they are the ones who will meet the end of my blade.

I really enjoyed the video, this has nothing to do with the content in this video but I would really like to see your take on the moral decisions Ezio takes in ac revelations, I really love that game's narratives but some of the choices he makes like the riot to storm the arsenal and a more gray one like blowing up the gunpowder in Cappadocia were very surprising and interesting to me, I am not saying he was entirely wrong to do it or that he was out of character since it can be argued that both decisions were time sensitive and there wasn't really a different way. I find Valhalla and [especially] Odyssey to be more fun to do lore accurate play-throughs. It’s much easier with Odyssey, because there is a book, whereas Valhalla has a few comics that are more like “dlc” side stories. The RPG aspects allow you to choose to go against the character, or better yet, learn how that character behaves and thinks and select choices based on that alone. It made me appreciate Kassandra so much more, but also find Eivør* very dull [compared to my first playthrough]. Restricting your dialogue or allegiances to what is canon as opposed to choices you wish to make is quite the change to what would otherwise be your routine or instincts. Edit: Also in response to the video, I like the idea of playing the games as “what would be a historically accurate/likely” playthrough. When I unlocked the Treasure Hunter outfit-which is apparently a reference to Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark-I wore that for a long time because it’s coincidentally VERY close to the actual, historic outfit worn by [at least one of] the Hashashins that the first game and Levantine Assassins are inspired by. There is a colored illustration, although it’s difficult to find at times, but there’s a KZbin video detailing the true history that clearly inspired the first game. I forgot the KZbin channel, but it shouldn’t be difficult to find when searching.

*on a bit of a tangent, you can tell just how much Ubisoft doesn’t even care about Eivør, which doesn’t help how bad the game turned out from a story and gameplay loop perspective. She didn’t get a novel, only a few comics. I don’t recall ever seeing articles nor videos about the behind the scenes or making of Valhalla. If anyone found any recently, please let me know where to look. I’ve always been curious if they ever explained why they decided to completely piss away history despite Odyssey being surprisingly faithful (watch the historian react video on it).
