I've played through the game so I already know this. Yes, the two wolves are separate incarnations of the same God, but they were both named Amaterasu. Shiranui was a NICKNAME given by the village to the first wolf, who died. Yes, the village mistook future Ammy for past Amaterasu and called that wolf Shiranui as well. It doesn't change the fact that the wolf was always Amataerasu. I've never played Okamiden, so I can't speak on anything in that game, I'm going by the first Okami in-game lore.

Amaterasu the Sun God, along with Issun the Wandering Artist, finds the first 9 Brush Gods and constantly runs into Susano that just so happens to be following the same path as her. With quick-time events using the Celestial Brush, Susano makes his quest to kill Crimson Helm, a miniboss. Waka, the prophet that traveled to the Celestial Plain, also appears before Amaterasu many multiple times to give her prophecies that will help her along the journey. When Amaterasu finally enters the Moon Cave (after many adventures), Susano sneaks in after Amaterasu, ready to finish what he started. When Amaterasu successfully infiltrates the Moon Cave and bypasses the many demons, she is finally face to face with Orochi. Just when they start the fight, Susano appears to not run away from Orochi, but to actually kill him and save Kushi, the sacrifice and soon to be Orochi's dinner. In the end of the battle, history repeats itself again from 100 years ago; *"The warrior and the wolf get Orochi intoxicated with the 8 Purification Sake. As the demon is limp from drinking too much, the sacred wolf howls upon the skies and the warrior thrusts his sword skyward as the moon shines upon the sacred sword. The warrior then uses his newly powered sword to finish off Orochi."* Orochi has been finally defeated as Susano delivers the final blow straight down the last Orochi head's neck. Susano marries Kushi, Nippon is saved, and all is well. *_...OR IS IT?_* Have fun. (insert ending here)

Technically though, it's correct to call the wolf that appeared 100 years ago "Amaterasu". The villagers just didnt know that was its name and gave it the name "Shiranui". I think the game just referred to Past!Amaterasu as Shiranui because it was the name that the wolf was remembered by and also to avoid any confusion. But Shiranui is still technically Amaterasu.

I first got this game for the Nintendo Wii and then I bought the PS4 version. The PS4 version is SO MUCH EASIER to do the brush strokes, but it is still an awesome game, no matter the platform.

They made a mistake here. In the beginning of the game, when the moon is summoned and the wolf is injured, that is actually Shiranui, not Amaterasu. Shiranui is Amaterasu's past life.

Issun and all of the spirit world know this, in the beginning when Sakuya awakens Amaterasu she never refer to her ever as "shiranui", but the goddess Amaterasu who saved the village once. Shiranui = what the people who did not know who she was called her. If you played the game you would know it was the same wolf. :/

In Shinto (the religion most Japanese mythology comes from and what Okami is based on) The gods are shown to be able to self generate, and even spontaneously generate from the bodies of other gods (That is actually how Amaterasu is born, from the body of Izanagi as he washes himself of the evils of the underworld). 'The white wolf was dubbed Shiranui' (Paraphrasing from game). Shiranui from the legend and Amaterasu are one in the same. When Shiranui died, his-yes, Shiranui is considered male-his brush power was lost and his spirit was sealed inside his weapon. Amaterasu was reborn from the statue the villagers made. My biggest problem with Okami is Orochi. He's setup as this super badass, and apparently he is in the lore. But you fight him like 1/4th of the way through the game fairly easily, then he pops up the 3 mored times. Each time he's even more easy, until by the last encounter I was laughing at how pathetic he was.

It is also physically impossible for Orohime to transform at the time she did, and equally impossible for her to transform while the ship in the past was sailing. Orochi's return created the cursed zones, and Orochi's death caused the Sea Serpent to become mad. Therefore, (1) Orohime cannot be in possesson of the Draconian orb, and thus cannot transform (2) It should be impossible to be on the ship without having a cursed zone everywhere

Think about it, it was Amaterasu on the celestial plane, and then after the celestial plane got destroyed, Amaterasu went to Nippon with Waka, and stalked Kamiki for a long time. Can't remember the exact quote, but i'm sure that saying the villagers dubbed her that was correct. If I am correct this is a blow to Okamiden's lore, calling Shiranui 'he' 'ancestor' etc.

Amaterasu is the Shinto/Japanese mythological god of the Sun, Tsukuyomi is the Shinto/Japanese mythological god of the Moon. Okami, being a game that's based off of the Japanese mythology, obviously includes these deities; Naruto only (pretty much) used the names.

To clear up your confusion, Shiranui and Amaterasu are basically the same person. But Amaterasu being Shiranui's second life. The humans called Amaterasu Shiranui, but after his (or her's) death some found out that he/she was Amaterasu. In Okamiden, Mr. Grapefruit refereed Shiranui as Amaterasu after his death. And I say this, Shiranui and Amaterasu are pretty much the same but different lives. While Chibi-Terasu was indeed born from Ameterasu, not the same being as her.

It's based on, not 1:1 faithful. I remember reading something about Susano being Ammy's "Brother", and the divine instruments used in the games are names of ancient treasure passed down from generation to generation, never really shown to anyone other than some very high ranking priestess and the Emperor, who has to see them as a rite of becoming the Emperor. I think people are misunderstanding the difference between Amaterasu and Shiranui. Ammy and Shiranui are the same being. Shiranui was the name given to Ammy by the people of Kamiki Village. Amaterasu is reborn through the Divine Instrument; so while it is a different body, it is the same goddess. Amaterasu is a reincarnation. Reincarnation means being reborn in a different body yet having the same spirit. Therefore it is possible to have both Shiranui and Ammy, yet both are the same deity/kami.

Ammy is not the daughter of Shiranui! Shiranui was the name the people used to use for Ammy before Orchi was first slain. The thought that shiranui was a helper/regular of Orochi, but after saving them and sacrificing herself, the town felt bad and made a shrine in her honor, laying her to rest. I shall corretct this lore. 1. Amatarasu (forgive me spelling) was Shirinui Ammy's Dad technically 2. Nagi did'nt rage about orochi that was Susano 3. Shirinui's statue is Ammy, not him.

In the game Amaterasu went back in time to defeat Orochi. While in the past the people mistaken her for Shiranui. After Orochi's defeat Shiranui reappeared to save Nagi. Shiranui then traveled into the future to aid Amaterasu in the battle with Lechnu and Nechu. To me it almost makes it obvious that they are different beings. I don't care if Capcom created Okamiden, I'm going by that canon. I guess there can be two canons, so lets leave it to the fans to decide what to believe.

Chibi can still be Amaterasu's child if he self generated form her. Hell, Amaterasu and Susanoo (the gods) were the children of Izanagi, despite self generating from him.

In about 99% of places -- Why did the Draconians need the orb to transform their queen into a sea serpent? -- Why is Shiranui apparently male? As well as a completely broken part in Okamiden, in one particular area in the time-travel segment... I thought hard, and came up with a contradiction which makes that entire segment impossible. Forgot it, though... Most fanfics of Okami likely stick more to the lore than it's own sequel.

As you don't seem to be replying to anyone, I'll inform you. Okami (2006) and Naruto (1999) sample much of their lore from Shinto (elements date back over 2000 years ago), much like Dragon Ball (1984) samples some lore from Journey to the West (1592). Hearing familiar terms doesn't mean that one is copying/borrowing/paying homage to something created recently. God of War (2005) samples from the same material that Disney's Hercules (1997) did. Hope you don't think Shinigami is exclusive.

and it wasn't Amaterasu, it was Shiranui, Amaterasu is Shiranui's descendant, inheriting the celestial brush powers like a family heirloom. Evil demons are taking over the land of Nippon, awaking Amaterasu from her slumber inside the statue of Shiranui. Almost all the residents of Nippon have stopped believing in the gods weakening them to the point that average mortals cannot see their godly markings and cannot recognize them. feel free to add more to this if you have beaten the game like me.

acually, Shiranui is like the 6th incarnation of Amatarsu or something like that, while Ammy from the game would be the 7th, and chibi was then a direct decendant instead of a reincarnation. So while Shiranui is not directly a grandparent to chibi, he still kinda is.

Nono, it was Shiranui who fought alongside Nagi. Ami fought with Susano and then Chibiterasu with... His name escapes me, but it was Susano's adopted son.
