Here is an explanation of the Eurovision Song Contest! Basics: The Eurovision Song Contest is a competition between mostly European countries where competing countries send an act to perform an original song, important to note is that it's a SONG competition, and not a SINGING competition. A competitor is judged on the song, the voice, the stage performance etc. The whole package is important. The entries are scored by the public of each country (viewers at home), and a profesional jury from each country. They make up for about half the points each. A country cannot vote for itself. After two semi-finals, 26 countries participate in the final, and the song with most points win, and gets to host the competition next year. History: Eurovision started in 1956 and has taken place every year since minus 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic. The contest started in hopes of uniting a divided continent after the second world war through the universal language of music. As the years progressed the contest has developed a lot, and has become bigger, and bigger every year. The first year only 7 countries took part and the stage was only a curtain, but as the years have gone by more and more countries have taken part, the stage has gotten bigger, and the technical quality gotten greater. Eurovision is now the biggest, most watched music event in the world with more than 160 million people watching the contest each year. Song Rules: A song cannot be longer than 3 minutes, the main performers vocals must be sung live, a song can be sung in whatever language or none at all (Belgium even sent a song in a made up language, twice). Songs with a political message are forbidden, however the lines are not always so clear as the what is too "political", and not. Voting: A country cannot vote for itself. Each country casts vote from the public and a professional jury. In the semi-finals there is only public voting, no jury at all. The top 10 of each countries public, and the top 10 professional jury receive points. The public, and the jury of each country can therefore vote differently. 10th place = 1 point, 9th place = 2 points, 8th place = 3 points, 7th place = 4 points, 6th place = 5 points, 5th place = 6 points, 4th place = 7 points, 3rd place = 8 points, 2nd place = 10 points, 1st place = 12 points. - The Public: The viewers at home call a telephone number to vote for a song which costs a small fee. The top 10 songs receive points. Important to note, as of this year "the rest of the world" can vote in the contest, the viewers of none participating countries votes in the same way as ONE country would. Basically you can think of it as an extra country in the voting. Combined the public and the rest of the world makes up about 52% of the total points. - The Jury: The jury rank the songs the top 10 songs receive points. Gives about 48% of the total points. The country with most points win! The country also gets the honor of hosting next years competition. Participation Rules: To participate in Eurovision a country has to be apart of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) or be an associate member of the EBU and be invited to participate. This is how for example Australia got to participate, they are an associate member, and since they had such a large following of the contest in Australia, they were invited to participate for the 60th anniversary of the contest in 2015 as a one of thing, but they didn't want to stop so they struck a deal and now the EBU invites them every year. Song selection: A broadcaster in the country is the one taking care of this process, it would perhaps be NTA in Nigeria to give an example :) The country's broadcaster choose their own way to select their representative. It is either an internal selection or a national competition. - Internal selection: The broadcaster usually receives submission and selects the song and or performer behinds closed doors. - National competition: This is way more fun for us eurovision fans. It's and entire show usually dedicated to select the countries eurovision entry, basically it's a mini eurovision. But these shows are not some small thing, in many countries such as Sweden, and Italy their national Finals have been going on for as long as or even longer than Eurovision, and are pretty much watched by the entire population of the country. For instance, the "national final performance" of Blanca Paloma you reacted to was the performance of the national competition which was used to select her for eurovision. She was born in Sweden with Berber Moroccan heritage. And she's the most likeable popstar you ever wished you'd meet. Three other watchable performances by Loreen: "Euphoria": Eurovision 2012 (which she also won( "Statements". Swedish selection 2017 (where she didn't even qualify for the Swedish finals. Probably because it was too serious for the general public looking for a danceable bop?) "Paper Light". Performed as the middle act during the Swedish selection in 2015, and featuring Ukrainian male, stilettoed dancers "Kazaki', of Madonna's "Girl Gone Wild" video fame. All three performances were immaculately rehearsed down to the smallest detail. ❤

Eurovision Song Contest is a competition where European and few other countries outside Europe countries takes part to send a representative to perform. It has been going on since 1956. This year UK hosted on behalf of Ukraine (Ukraine won in 2022, UK came 2nd). This year 38 countries took part with 26 selected in final. Countries votes with juries and televotes to select favourite entries. Most points wins the competition
